Thought I'd start a thread now that the shows have been revealed. Who's got a DC or student applying? I have a feeling in my bones it won't be my DS's year this time - he's nearly 15, voice not broken but not reliable either, and apart from the one show we don't know I can't see anything he could obviously do! But he'll give it best shot and if no luck we'll still watch the shows. Good luck to all!

Hi @Oakmaiden. Your DD has done really well! I think the being busy juggling shows thing is common for these kinds of kids. If I were you I would get in touch with NYMT as soon as the festival on 5th is confirmed. They will appreciate you being straightforward with them. Obviouslyvthe eater rehearsal dates are important and they can't have people coming and going for this, that and the other, but a performance on the first day they could possibly work around, especially as your DD is recalled for summer shows. NYMT are super lovely. If you email and explain the issue I think they would be understanding and respectful of an actual performance and it might be possible for your DD to arrive the day after. It's not my place to say of course but it's worth asking and much better to flag now than present as a fait accompli.

Oakmaiden Congrats on recall, DS also has recall for Kiss me Kate and has done BYMT four times (one show twice...) happy to DM you if I can work out how! Biscuitsneeded hope you’re not kept waiting long....

manicmumsday · 04/02/2020 18:04

@Oakmaiden: congrats to your DD! You didn’t have to wait long for news either, which is great.

@Biscuitsneeded: no news here either, although I wasn’t expecting any just yet. How fast do they normally tell people? They told DS he’d know by Friday at the latest but it sounds like it may well be quicker than that? (just trying to gage when to start obsessively checking email!)

Biscuitsneeded · 04/02/2020 18:13

No news here either. Could be any time up to about Friday, but really hope it's earlier! @Oakmaiden, was your DD in Cardiff on Saturday? Nobody we know from the London session on Sat has heard anything. Manicmumsday I think we may be emailed after London so probably not tonight... but you never know!

Oakmaiden · 04/02/2020 20:07

Yes, she auditioned in Cardiff.

Biscuitsneeded · 04/02/2020 20:09

@Oakmaiden, thanks. Happy for you that she got news so quickly!

Congratulations to everyone with call backs.
In comparing the two organisations BYMT is fractionally bigger in that it took 280 participants in shows last year, they do have the courses and workshops, but these have no auditions. BYMT does audition more people 1600 last year. BYMT has a remit to take MT to the whole country in it's Arts Council Funding hence why they have shows all over the country.
The organisation as a parent I found excellent and there are no call backs you are either in a show or not. The some individual shows have casting days.
I think both are a excellent step up from local musical theatre and both have large numbers of alumni in West End productions.
BYMT do have their shows assessed by Trinity College and Wanderlust the show my DD was in last year was awarded Distinction Grade 8 MT in production.
Slightly different organisations doing things slightly differently.

folkmamma · 05/02/2020 13:03

That's really helpful @Lonecatwithkitten thanks! Do BYMT have rehearsals over the Easter hols??? Just wondering as you don't hear until a bit later, do you??

DD has her auditions this weekend.

Lonecatwithkitten · 05/02/2020 13:41

@folkmamma no all rehearsals are in the summer holidays. Casting days are Saturdays in May, but not every production has them.

folkmamma · 05/02/2020 13:57

Saturdays 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Lonecatwithkitten · 05/02/2020 17:05

@folkmamma it is one Saturday for each production and you will have already been allocated a production so it will just be one day.

folkmamma · 05/02/2020 17:13

Well, might not even be an issue so we'll have to cross that bridge if we come to it... but DD is fully committed on Saturdays (she's at music college in London).

minimits · 05/02/2020 21:42

Lonecatwithkitten casting days with BYMT have been a bit different for my DS. The first and last show he did with them had casting days in May but they weren’t on a Saturday-they were residential rehearsals/casting. The first was 5 days away and last year he was away for 4 days in May half term. These were the ‘older’ shows, children averaged 16/17/18. When he did a ‘younger’ show (most children were around 13) there were no casting days and they just cast it when they got to the summer residential. We haven’t had any experience of the one day auditions but DS had been allocated a show each time after auditioning so not sure how it works if you haven’t been. Basically I’d say the casting/rehearsal experience can be very different depending on what show you get. The first year he did it he was away for three weeks of summer and the second it was just over two. Last year it was just under three.

Lonecatwithkitten · 05/02/2020 22:04

@minimits DD knows people who did Fight like a girl and Peter Pan which both had single casting days on a Saturday in May.
DD was in Wanderlust which wasn't cast till the summer residential.
I didn't know that the older shows had longer castings.

minimits · 05/02/2020 22:20

Fight like a girl definitely wasn’t a day-DS was in it! He was away for three nights in May half term.

Lonecatwithkitten · 06/02/2020 16:17

Interesting @minimits one of DD's friends was chorus, but only had to attend a Saturday so maybe it is not the same for every member of the cast.

minimits · 06/02/2020 16:23

Lonecatwithkitten that seems very odd! Maybe she could only make it then? The rest of the cast were there for 4 days-they didn’t know if they were chorus/principals until after the casting days then got the script through which had their parts and lines. They had time to learn boxing/go through the songs and bond as a group. I think it’s an entirely different experience with every show to be honest!
