Does anyone wish to join me

notandidea backpain is probably from lack of cushioning as your foot impacts the ground - a nice shiny pair of new trainers should sort that definitely the down hill will not be helping with the impact - if your trainers are old then all the impact will be transferred up your spine. when you go downhill, either walk or take very tiny steps. DO NOT be tempted to run downhill fast as it will make things worse

I am still off running and going slightly potty as a result. however have booked appointment with orthotist for saturday a.m. to have my feet properly checked - so hopefully back to the running then

Rugbylovingmum · 15/06/2010 23:18

Hi all,

is it too late for me to join in? My maternity leave finishes next week and I'm going back to work feeling very large and unfit. I ran the race for life a few years ago and enjoyed it (don't know why I didn't keep the running up afterwards ) so I've decided to give it another go. It would be great to get some moral support on here when I'm stiff and aching after the first few jogs. Hopefully I'll do the first run tomorrow but DP has been in bed with a tummy bug today so it depends whether he will look after DD tomorrow. She is usually up at 5am so no way I can go out before she is up!

Rugbylovingmum · 15/06/2010 23:20

PS I noticed a few people were saying how expensive running trainers are. A friend of mine who does a lot of running told me he always had his trainers fitted in a shop then looked online for last seasons version of the same shoe and often got a real bargain. I don't know how easy that is but might be worth a try?

notanidea · 15/06/2010 23:33

Join in rugbylovingmum. Can u tell me what sort of shops fit your running shoes.Iam also a nolvice to runnning

TheNextMrsDepp · 15/06/2010 23:58

Hi Rugbylovingmum, hope you manage to get out there in the next couple of days.

Well FiByTheIcySea, you've got the shoes, you've got the over-shoulder-boulder-holder, have you made it out for your first run yet?? I'm waiting with baited breath.....

As for me, well, I was high-fiving myself all day because I managed the first session of Week 4 - with the big 5 minute runs! I can't believe I did it. The first two runs were OK; I thought I might run out of steam during the third, but when I started the fourth run I was temporarily distracted from my aching calves by the decidedly dodgy mixing skills of Robert Ullrey on the podcast as he blended one track into another. By the time I'd finished prodding my mp3 player, thinking there must have been some terrible technical malfunction, there was only one minute to go! Robert, darling, you may be a good motivational running coach, but you'll never make it as a DJ!

I'm reading with interest all this stuff about shoes, but reckon I'll stick with what I've got for now. Need some decent running trousers, though - my cheapo Primark trackies have all the wicking properties of a plastic binbag.

FiByTheIcySea · 16/06/2010 14:44

nextmrsdepp Yay! well done on 5min run yep I now have boulder holder and shoes but also an unwelcome UTI started AB's yesterday and waiting to stop feeling like i need to pee all the time before i head out fingers crossed they kick in quick!
rugbylovingmum hello i'm about to start so you're not too late!
notanidea I googled running shoes and my postcode that's how i found somewhere that would fit me for shoes. rugbylovingmum now i know i'm neutral and i like gel ones i'll definitely be shopping online for bargains.. great idea!

thelittlebluepills · 16/06/2010 20:58

rugbylovingmum - welcome and not too late at all - thanks for fab tip re shoes

mrsdepp - well done and it's so fab when you surprise yourself - it's so motivating

I went on the cross trainer last night - it was so dull. am totally missing running outside. and my shins started to hurt after a while too - so fed up. Boo hoo hoo. fingers crossed for saturday morning when i have booked to see the orthotist who hopefully will sort out my gait issues and miraculously heal me!

notanidea - how's the back pain?

supermum007 · 16/06/2010 22:25

Been to the second run of the second week

TheNextMrsDepp · 17/06/2010 00:01

Hi supermum007! thelittlebluepills - can I be ignorant and ask what shin splints are? Sounds painful.

supermum007 · 17/06/2010 00:12

not sure exactly - I just thought it is pain in the shin due to the stress the muscle in the leg takes due torunning.

TheNextMrsDepp · 17/06/2010 22:29

I did wk4 run2 this morning, struggled to get out of bed at 6.30am and really felt it this time but managed to keep going. Interrupted my cool-down walk to pick lots of lovely dandelions for the new rabbit, though!

Sod the new shoes, just ordered some lovely new running gear online! Hey, gotta look good!

How's everyone else doing?

thelittlebluepills · 17/06/2010 23:25

massive respect to MrsDepp for getting out of bed to go running!

tell us about your new running gear! I have a nice adidas pink top - it matches my fuschia-coloured face at the end of every run

shin splints is caused by impact - too much too soon, too much downhill (I live in Glossop - we don't do flat bits here ) it can be muscle damage or even tiny fractures of the shin bone - I'm hoping it's just a severe case of unfitness and that I can get back out running

TheNextMrsDepp · 17/06/2010 23:44

thelittlebluepills - thanks for the good wishes, I have to say, no-one is more surprised about the new me than I am!

New running stuff is adidas, but turquoise (not sure what it matches....!), can't wait til it arrives. There's only so long you can run in an ancient pair of Primark cropped polyester trackies!

I'll keep an eye out for shin pain, I have to say, I'm very much pacing myself and have worked out a virtually flat course, so hope I'll be OK. Hope you are back running soon, good luck with orthotist on Saturday.

Glossop is lovely - my grandfather was from that part of the world (Tintwistle). Doubt he went jogging in pink adidas, though

notanidea · 18/06/2010 09:16

Backpain is lot better but ran a different course this time.I am due to run the third run of the second wek today.Well done The next Mrsdepp.I run with a T shirt which says football is overrated

TheNextMrsDepp · 18/06/2010 11:25

Well done notanidea, glad the back isn't so sore. Do you run on roads/tarmac or grass/paths?

notanidea · 18/06/2010 11:51

road/tarmac.I am determined to run 5k.you all given so much motivation to do it.

thelittlebluepills · 18/06/2010 14:38

We should all meet up to do our first 5 k race together!

notanidea · 18/06/2010 22:09

just ran my last of the runs in the second week.Goint to start the third week on sunday-what should I expect?

TheNextMrsDepp · 18/06/2010 23:19

notanidea - the start of every new week terrifies me, but, guess what, I seem to somehow manage it, and you will too! I think week 3 is 3 minute runs, let us know how you get on.

Hooray - new running gear arrived (don't you just love Next - ordered online at 10pm last night, parcel arrived at lunchtime today). At last I have a jacket so I won't freeze when I run at 6.30am, and a pair of capri running trousers so I no longer look like a jogging dustman.

Eeek - now I've made a financial commitment I'll have to keep at it! Next run tomorrow.....

FiByTheIcySea · 19/06/2010 19:36

right girls i'm off for my first run.. i'll report back after

TheNextMrsDepp · 19/06/2010 20:00

Go Fi!! Go Fi!!

Rugbylovingmum · 19/06/2010 20:47

Hey girls,

I've still not managed to get out for a run . DD and DP are both ill plus we had problems with the house we are buying so I've just not found the time . Excuses, excuses, I know .... DP is feeling better today though so he has said he can take care of DD tomorrow so I can do that first run. I'll be back to report as soon as I'm back (and showered ).

Fi - hope the first run went well!

TheNextMrsDepp and notanidea - congrats on getting so far. Are you feeling fitter?

TheNextMrsDepp · 19/06/2010 21:21

Rugbylovingmum - good luck getting out there tomorrow. Do it first thing, before you get distracted by other things etc. otherwise the day will be over. Then you can relax and feel smug for the rest of the day!

You know, I'm definitely feeling the benefits. My legs feel much firmer and I've lost a few pounds (but I am also trying to lo-carb as well).

I did the last run of week 4 this morning (in my gorgeous new running trousers). DH thinks I should repeat the week in case I push myself too hard, but I've decided to move onto week 5; after all, so far I have managed to follow the programme without any problems. But if I cannot keep going for the specified time I'll move down again.

Next run Monday, then I'm going to struggle for a few days as DH is off on a business trip (how inconsiderate!). Might manage a quick blast while DD2 is at Rainbows on Tuesday.

FiByTheIcySea · 19/06/2010 22:17

well done nextmrsdepp & rugbylovingmum on your runs

I managed run 1 shoes, bra and podcast were great but I think I may need something different to my pineapple cropped tracky bottoms as they kept slipping downwards even with the drawstring tied fairly tight it was great getting out and then having a well deserved soak in the bath! so how sore will i be tomorrow do you think?!

FiByTheIcySea · 19/06/2010 22:23

sorry mis read.. good luck for tomorrow rugbylovingmum
