That sounds like a good idea, popsy

if have a distance we could each "pledge", I wonder what distance it would all add up to?

If we also said what tuuunes we were going to listen to on the way, we could have a huge MN Marathon Mega Mix as well!!

popsycal · 25/11/2009 20:52

I really want to do this MNMarathon. I think if we decide on a weekend rather than a day which gives us all a bit of flexibility.

I have several ideas:

  • 'teams' which add up to 26.2 miles each - so dependingon how far each person runs depends on how many per team

  • we obvioulsy could approach MNHQ to make a bigger deal out of it (would approach themanyway if money was invlved)

  • we could ask lots of MNer to sponsor us

AND

  • if we put the date of the run enough in advance, we could persuade some new people to get to 5k and get 8 of them together to run a marathon IYSWIM. Get them doing the couch to 5k programme - post new year would be a good time

I really think we should do this

MoshiMoshi · 25/11/2009 22:58

popsy -fabulous idea! Count me in. It really works for me as I never seem able to shake off any children for any serious length of time. However I should be able to step out for a synchronized run! Viruses ahoy here really getting in the way of any running rhythm. Gggrrrr! Stay healthy everyone. Sending positive vibes to Twink and the Twink family.

liath · 26/11/2009 17:56

Popsycal, that is an inspired idea - count me in (touch wood the tendonitis is finally healing...).

popsycal · 27/11/2009 17:52

right
am thinking of setting a date around 12 weeks after new year to encourage new starter to do the couch to 12 weeks programme.....will need to work out whenthat is but am figuring around end of MArch/Easter....

popsycal · 27/11/2009 18:55

27/28 march is the week before easter weekend and is 12 weeks fromnew year wweekend.....

popsycal · 27/11/2009 19:28

I have just emailed MNHQ:

Hi everyone,

Just writing to you on behalf of the lovely MN runners: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/sports_and_exercise/817262?pagingOff=1#17672106

We are a group of mums who like to run and recently, one of our most inspirational and well-respected friends, Twink, has had a very difficult time and Mr Twink has cancer. She is so strong and inspirational. We want to do something in both Twink's and Mr Twink's honour. I have come up with the idea of a MN marathon relay.

I wanted to ask MNHQ first since it is linked to MN and we would hope to raise money for charity.

The idea is that we each 'pledge' to run a certain distance on a particular weekend (provisonally 27/28 March) and are organised into teams, each of which run 26.2 miles.

Us runners would definitely do it but I have consciously set the date at 12 weeks after New year in the hope of recruiting some new runners to do a 12 week 'couch to 5k' training programme and taking part too.

The charity is yet to be confirmed - I am awaiting suggestions from Twink and her dh.

How does MNHQ feel about this? We could keep it as low or high profile as you wish - although high profile is obviously preferable in terms of getting sponsorship. Would be happy to do a blog etc too.

Please let me know. We would really like to do this for our friend.

Hi everyone

Just dropping in to read all the latest. Popsy, this is a fantastic idea. Please count me in. I have nothing but deep respect for the amazing attitude of Twink & MrTwink.

Twink · 27/11/2009 21:40

Am overwhelmed and more than a bit tearful. Thank you so much Popsy & all of you, I've just shown this to Mr T, and he's gobsmacked. He's always known how helpful Mumsnet was when miniT was small but hadn't realised how much he was boosting people with his personal battle.

It's been a really tough few days; our GP thinks we're into the final phase now, he reckoned around a fortnight when we spoke on Tuesday but did say he'd never bet against MrT and that special brand of determination he has. I've never wished for Christmas to come quicker than this year...

Macmillan have been absolutely superb over the last 6 months and anything to boost them would be fantastic. I'll be racing Half Ironman UK in aid of them later next year. Alternatively, if people have a local cancer care centre or hospice they'd like to support, that would be splendid too. We're trying to make sure he can stay at home, and have good community care to help us to realise that plan but lots of regions don't have support like ours available.

Thanks again all of you. xx

popsycal · 27/11/2009 21:41

twink- much love to all three of you xxxxx

OrmIrian · 27/11/2009 21:42

popsy - fantastic idea!

twink - you are one amazingly strong woman. Sending all my thoughts and good wishes.

peachsmuggler · 27/11/2009 22:29

Great idea popsy.

Thinking of you and your family Twink. My mum died of cancer a few years ago, and agree with you that Macmillan are awesome.

Themasterandmargaritas · 28/11/2009 04:36

Oh Twink, I am so so sorry Fingers crossed that you get to enjoy Christmas together as a family. As Orm said, you are an amazing woman and I'm sure MrT is an equally amazing man.

Popsy the email sounds perfect.

Wallace · 28/11/2009 06:39

I came on to have a moan about never finding time to run at the mo. I realise that my troubles are nothing compared to some.

Best of love to your family, Twink xxx

popsy - fantastic idea. I'm in.

MoshiMoshi · 28/11/2009 12:20

twink - wishing the Twink family the most amazing Christmas. My thoughts are with you during this tricky time. I'll definitely be running for MacMillan, you can count on it.

soyabean · 29/11/2009 17:39

Hello all and especially Twink and family -I so hope that you get to spend Christmas together at home.

I would certainly be up for the run so will keep watching. Good idea.

Master still havent done your CD but will!

I have done 2 x 5k ish this week, not great but v busy ast work and dmother visiting this weekend. Must try harder...

popsycal · 29/11/2009 19:28

Hi everyone

Still awaiting a response from MNHQ regarding the MN Marathon Relay. Suspect it is just the weekend lull.

So far, if I have read correctly, we have the following interested in taking a leg of the MN marathon relay:

IdrisTheDragon
Themasterandmargaritas
Wheelybug
Stickylittlefingers
MoshiMoshi
liath
sfxmum ???
19fran76
OrmIrian ???
peachsmuggler
Wallace
popsy

The ??? are there for those of you who have sounded interested but have not given a definite 'I'm in'.

My suggestion is the weekend of the 27/28 March. The weekend before Easter and a little over 12 weeks after New Year to allow us to recruit for 'couch to 5k' people

I now need to think about length of relay legs (we don't need each tem to be the same). For example, a team may comprise:

  • 1 x half marathon, 2x a little over 10k
  • 4x a little over 10k
  • 8x a little over 5k

I think maybe we ought to think about the distances we want to 'pledge' and take it from there.

I am happy to go up to half marathon distance if necessary - let's see what everyone else feels.

I will start a new thread once we have got the MNHQ go ahead

For Twink xx

heartofgold · 29/11/2009 19:37

hello runners.

twink i'm so sorry to hear how things are with you, i've only occasionally checked in with this thread but each time i've been humbled and inspired in equal measure by you and mr twink.

may i join the virtual marathon? i've always said i couldn't imagine running an actual race, but i think even a shy runner like me should be able to manage a virtual one.

Wheelybug · 29/11/2009 19:52

Thinking of you all Twink.

I'm definitely in and will aim for 10K (although only running 5K at mo but need a push). However, I might not be able to do that w/e but given its virtuality presume I could stretch the w/e to Monday or something ??

sfxmum · 29/11/2009 20:33

will definitely pledge a slow 10K
will ask for funds from extended family at Christmas and local MN mates

OP posts:
IdrisTheDragon · 29/11/2009 20:55

I will definitely pledge a 10k or a 5k - whichever needs more people.

Did my reindeer run 10k today and managed it in just under 65 min which I was v pleased with. Was squelchy in places and a few hills (slopes really but hills to a Bedfordshire person like me).

Was amazed it was during the couple of hours in the day with no rain.

stickylittlefingers · 29/11/2009 22:20

Hi - Idris am that you live in a part of the country that had no rain for a couple of hours. I was running round Fountains Abbey in a santa suit this morning and was getting thoroughly soaked! Was a shame that it meant lots of people didn't turn up. Could hardly blame anyone for that, it was dreadful weather and such a shame.

I enjoyed it nevertheless - tho if I do a santa run again (which I probably will ) I will take more safety pins. It was very hard keeping my clothes on!

Will try and rope the local MNers into doing what distance they would feel happy with. Would be more fun to take a few people with me to do 5k than do 20k on my own, I reckon.
