You were quite right, thanks!

I asked a friend to have miniT and we all ended as winners; she was delighted to be useful, miniT got away from her grumpy mother AND went swimming while I managed a lovely 4 miler along the canal.

hatwoman · 05/09/2009 20:37

this is a great pic - being near the back it's a view with which I'm quite familiar!

MrsWednesday · 05/09/2009 21:06

Brilliant photograph

It looks total madness. Fun though!

MasterM, sorry to hear you're injured too.

Glad you managed to get out Twink. Saw loads of runners when I was out and about (driving) today, was v jealous as I just can't run long enough to get into a proper groove.

MoshiMoshi · 06/09/2009 08:13

Hurray new thread! Been absent due to various factors including renovations reaching crucial climax and friend passing away with ovarian cancer. She left her two boys :-( it is so sad. Planning on much running with school commencing on Monday starting with running the school runs. Had planned on getting DCs 1&2 to scoot but of course they are still packed in storage aren't they (scooters, not DCs)!

Twink - great to see the power of running helping you out. Hold onto that support!

badgermonkey · 06/09/2009 08:33

Hi, runners! I've been absent for a bit - went on holiday for two weeks to Ibiza. Did a few early-morning runs with DH but it was too hilly for me and hot even at 7am. I like it colder! Then when we got back, I did a good week, then pulled an intercostal muscle so didn't run for ten days. Nightmare. Also DH has broken his big toe so he's not doing anything.

So, got myself up for an early solo run today and did the worst four miles ever! My legs were fine but as a result of all the above my aerobic fitness has suffered. I don't know if I was subconciously avoiding taking deep breaths when my ribs hurt or what, but I struggled to get any air at all and had to stop THREE times with a stabbing stitch. I was thinking of going back to 2 and 3 mile runs for a week or so - haven't done any that short for months, but I need to learn to breathe again! I have been reading "Born to Run" which is the only reason I go back out there in the first place!

morethanyoubargainfor · 06/09/2009 09:45

good mornig everyone.

Sorry sfxmum and twink that i let the side down yesterday by not goin gout but i have just got back from my first every 2 miler . I feel good now but my word it was hard work today, it seems climbing mountains and running are two totally seperate things!!, but still i think it was quite good, did have to stop for 2 30 second walks yet still i'm proud. I haven't been out running for 2 weeks.

Themasterandmargaritas · 07/09/2009 07:51

Hooray we are all getting back to it

Yesterday I took dd (7) out because she is straight into cross country at school this week, with house competition only 3 weeks into term, poor things. She and I together managed 2km I dropped her at the gate and did another 2k. My knee was a little sore at the end but not too bad, so today I took dd again, did a slow 1k with her then did another 4k and it felt great . Perhaps that slow warm up at the beginning does the trick for my old knee?

Sorry about your friend Moshi that is terribly sad.

That photo hatwoman is fab, I am quite

hatwoman · 07/09/2009 10:00

Hi again. no particular running to report - but came to wax lyrical about the updated goodrunguide.co.uk. I've been using it for years (it's a route measurer and log book) but they've just put a whole load more stuff on it to play with your log book data and get lots of great info. Having, for some years, been very much an on-and-off runner I was particularly delighted to see that since January I have only had 3 weeks when I did no exercise - 2 of them I was injured and 1 was the week after the marathon. I've had 11 weeks of doing 4 runs and 10 weeks where I did 3. (all of which I could have deduced myself should I have had the inclination but there's nothing like seeing it on a dinky bar chart!).

hatwoman · 07/09/2009 10:06

oooo it's even better than I thought - there's only one week this year when I haven't exercised (the week after the marathon). The graph I was looking at was only for running - and didn't have the handful of cycle rides I'd done on it. I have never in all my years had such a sustained period of regular exercise. am feeling very pleased with myself!

popsycal · 08/09/2009 09:59

been away
not been running enough
did 10k the other day and I MUST dothe 12milesIwas meant to do on sunday.....

stickylittlefingers · 08/09/2009 12:40

I did that 12 miles on Sunday - oooh it's a long way! I got a bit bored, to tell the truth (plus desperate for a wee at 6 1/2 miles which didn't help!). Hoping it will just be so exciting on the day I won't encounter the first problem, and the portaloos will deal with the second.

Also finding it hard to get my calves to really loosen up afterwards. Could anyone give me any tips?

MoshiMoshi · 09/09/2009 19:46

sticky - are you doing calve stretching when you have warmed up a bit AND after your run? Also make sure calves aren't done in isolation as they work in tandem with the other leg muscles. If you are sat at a desk all day eg at work calves tend to get very tight and a sports massage may be more effective. Good luck with the rest of your training!

Twink · 09/09/2009 23:06

Did an awesome speed session with the gang last night, still hurts to think about it. Had a bit of a wobble half way through with my domestic situation so coach said I could sit out for a set or use the emotion to push harder - never one to miss a challenge me so I ran my socks off!

Did a 5 mile tempo run with a friend tonight while miniT was at Brownies, that hurt! All the muscles in between my ribs were howling as I'd used my arms to power through last night.

Hopefully will run to the gym & back tomorrow from the MOT centre (fingers crossed for my small helicoptor car) before collecting Mr T from the hospital!! yep, he's homeward-bound, just in time for miniT's birthday!!!

Themasterandmargaritas · 10/09/2009 06:52

Twink, I aspire to be able to run like you do, one day Great news that MrT can come home, miniT must be delighted to have daddy home for her birthday. Have a great celebration.

sfxmum · 10/09/2009 09:22

Great news Twink and happy birthday to miniT

am planning on going this afternoon after dh arrives home, early today really missing on weekday runs with dd home but school starts next week so it will be back to normal

Hello again everyone

Have not been running for 3/4 weeks as had nasty chest infection and sinusitis.

Went Tuesday night and cant believe what a difference it has made to my fitness levels - really struggled and had to stop several times and my lega ache even today.

Going again tonight because i have booked myself on to a 10k on Sunday - thinking it might not be such a good idea - didnt think few weeks off would make such a difference

hatwoman · 10/09/2009 18:42

Hi everyone - glad that Mr T is coming home. have a lovely time together.

I've decided to do some "speed" sessions too. (I put it in inverted commas because I doubt my version of speed is what anyone else would consider speed). I too did a run whilst the dcs were at Brownies last night! 6 miles going like the clappers, I thought and was gutted to see my garmin had clocked me doing 10-minute miles. Got home and measured the route on the computer and it was in fact about 6.75 - making it roughly 9 minute miles. much happier with that. my ultimate plan is to try to combine the speed and the hills

fishie · 11/09/2009 14:17

aren't garmins accurate then?

i have been plodding on. have first ever race on sunday, just a 5k but since it is going to be held where i run most days it felt a bit silly not to enter. any tips for me racers? i usually run about 40k a week in 5 runs.

best wishes to all in the twink household for a celebratory weekend.

hatwoman · 11/09/2009 21:32

fishie - generally they are yes. but (to give the long explanation!) something weird happened, I was doing a "work out" which I'm not quite au fait with yet. I thought I had paused it (at a pedestrian crossing). but it seemed that what I had done is reset the starting point (but not stopped the clock). so when I downloaded the route and looked at it on a map the first .75 of a mile wasn't there. I'm not entirely sure what I did wrong - but am fairly sure it was user error rather than the garmin iyswim

liath · 12/09/2009 17:07

Just finished reading Feet in the Clouds. I can categorically state now that I do not under any circumstances ever want to run a Bob Graham round. Ever.

morethanyoubargainfor · 12/09/2009 18:52

can anybody tell me who the authour of born to run is?

hatwoman · 12/09/2009 19:51

liath - did you enjoy it? I think it's a brilliant book. and whilst it doesn't make me want to do the BG as such I can't deny that it does kind of make me wish I had another life in which I came to running and fell running and going up mountains much earlier and had got it all out of my system (yep, and done a BG) before I hit 30 and had kids.

liath · 12/09/2009 23:16

Hatwoman, yes I really enjoyed it and ditto, wish I'd got into it younger. I did a lot of orienteering in my teens, which I really enjoyed, but never kept it up unfortunately.

Morethanyoubargainfor - Born to Run is by Christopher McDougall.

hatwoman · 12/09/2009 23:37

I did quite a bit of heavy duty walking in my teens - did the 3 peaks (snowdon, scafell pike and ben nevis) in 24 hours - which involved walking up and running down (with no training!) but totally let it drift when I was at uni, and then working in london, then kids...etc etc. and it's only in the last few years I've got into running, and then in the last few months that I've moved out of London and got into off-road running. I don't regret the way I spent my time in my 20s and most of my 30s, as such. but I just want another life as well. not much to ask!

popsycal · 13/09/2009 18:44

did a fab 9 miles today afternevrr getting round to the 12miles in myplan from last week

5 or 6 steady hills ad 2 worse hills where i was running lampost to lamposst to keep myself going
