Right, I am starting 'couch potato to 5k' again and I WILL finish

giddykipper · 01/01/2009 09:08

I WILL NOT nesh out again like I did last time.

DP has even bought me an iPod Shuffle to run with so that I don't have to lug my big iPod around (oh the inconvenience).

this is what I'm talking about and here's the podcasts I run to.

I'm not starting today though, got about 3 hours sleep last night.

W3r3 done - come on week 4

Felt better today than my last run, but i am still feeling heavy/solid in the legs. Hopefully this will go soon.

Bit worried about week 4, as i am only just managing to finish the 2nd 3min run on week 3. If i find it too difficult i can always walk and try again.

Good luck to all you ladies out running, hopefully the rain will hold off.

TrillianEAstraEgg · 07/04/2009 17:34

That's the spirit!

BrownSuga · 07/04/2009 17:47

Great to see you 5kr's still at it!

I'm back from hols, despite taking my running gear (haha, oh the optimism) I didn't get out for a run. Too many late nights combined with DS kicking and wriggling in our bed, and coming down with a cold (excuse, excuse), I didn't make it.

And haven't since we've been back, but am hoping I'll be sufficiently unstuffed and rested for tomorrow night. It's probably why I'm a grumpy cow at the moment, well even grumpier according to DH

Chinwag · 07/04/2009 19:59

Hey Goblin, love the name. You're way ahead of me now I think!

I haven't been out yet, as I have been away for a few days. Hope to get back into it soon!!!

giraffesCantRunA10k · 07/04/2009 20:26

welcome back from your hols brownsuga did you have a nice time?

Went for a run today after work, just a short one - 3 one minute bursts of running inbetween fast walking and yesterday went to the gym after work for 40 min - treadmill and bike. I feel so good, am loving it!!! I remember a few years ago when I was exercising more I got this buzz, but I stopped (cant remember why now) and had been not enjoying exercise much - was just something I did to try and keep weight in check. But now I have the buzz back really enjoying it!! ANd does this sound silly but I have more energy - was doing painting today with kids and had radio on - a song I like came on and I got up and was bouncing about like mad.

fakeblondie · 08/04/2009 12:53

Just completed wk 2 r 1 after doing wk 1 16 times fgs !
Astma is better controlled now the weather is not so cold and cant believe i`m saying this but i actually enjoyed it !

BrownSuga · 08/04/2009 16:41

I did thanks giraffe. We went to a friends wedding in Norway, was blardy cold though, mind you we've had snow today here in Montreal too, just as I've packed away my winter clothes . It hasn't stuck on the ground, so I should be able to get out running.

Well done blondie moving on. Keep at it, it gets more enjoyable the further you realise you can run.

mileniwmffalcon · 09/04/2009 09:37

morning runners. well done to all the noobs for sticking with it, like suga says the rewards get bigger as you go along, it's the early stages where you just need determination to get through.

loving the new names

first run for a week today. last time out it was hard going and i realised why when i came down with a cold later in the day. it was the kind of cold where i would have been in bed if i didn't have 2 birthday parties to organise over the weekend, so it's taken a bit of getting over.

just as i was going out this morning i found my ipod was completely out of juice, as was dd's, so i went out podless . that would have scared the crap out of me before, but it wasn't as bad as i feared. the cold still hasn't gone so physically it was pretty hard work, but i was chuffed that i managed to keep going through the tricky bits without distracting myself with the music - my usual technique. since i didn't have the pod i don't know how long it took, but i went 4.5k and only stopped 10secs at the lights.

quite proud of this one actually

oh and it turns out that local runners are friendlier than i thought. no-one really makes eye contact normally, which surprised me a bit as generally people are pretty friendly round here. but it turns out loads of people say hello/nod etc. when you don't have an ipod on - guess they just don't bother when they see you're in your own little world.

Chinwag · 09/04/2009 13:10

Forced myself out this morning. Haven't been out for about a week, as been away.

Aaargh, it was hard. I feel like I am doing this out of pure perseverence and not because I love it.

When does this stop???? I want to love it!!

TrillianEAstraEgg · 09/04/2009 13:42

Should be doing W5R3 today but I have a free trial afternoon at the gym so I'm going to go play on the machines instead.

I can't run on treadmills unfortunately, they freak me out because they bounce underneath you, I feel like I'm going to break them.

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 09/04/2009 15:25

Afternoon all.
SUppose to do W6r2 today but I wanted to do a bodypump class as well so I did and then followed it with W6r1 on the treadmill. Will hopefully do W6r2 on Saturday.

trillian - if you are going to the gym try and grab an instructor and get them to show you how to use the free weights rather than the machines, free weights are much better for you and ignore all the red-faced grunting men in that area you have as much right to be there as they do (in fact if you want have a laugh at there little chicken legs compared to their chests). The gym probably runs classes as well, if so see if they have body pump, it's a great class which will cover most of the major muscle groups in 45-60minutes.

chinwag - hmm well I don't love it but it took me until I conquered week 4 before I started not hating it. Perserve!

mileni - sounds like you had a good run. Sometimes taking a short break is good for you, gives your body time to recover fully.

brownsuga - welcome back

fakeblondie - have you enjoying week 2!

giraffe - running and biking? Have you thought of doing a super-sprint triathlon? Might be a goal after your 5K

TrillianEAstraEgg · 09/04/2009 16:10

Thanks Libras - if I join I will definitely make sure I get the most out of the instructors for my money. Today I did 20 mins on the crosstrainer (I like it, much less bouncy than running, more smooth) and had a swim. So I think I'm allowed to skip my run.

Well done doing class and a run, I'm very impressed. I thought those bodypump things were meant to tire you out!

goblincandoa5k · 09/04/2009 19:38

Evening all

milen Wow, without your ipod i'm very impressed.

brownsuga Glad that you had a great trip, shame about not running, but aren't you off to New York soon? Very jealous at the thought of you running through central park

fakeblondie is week 2 going ok? I hope so

libra and trillian you two must be super fit

chinwag congrats on getting out for your run. I have moments where i find it a struggle too. Although, i am kinda looking forward to wk4 tomorrow - ask me again when i come back!

What do you all wear running? I'm in some old jogging pants, t-shirt, etc with shiny new trainers. Does it matter that i don't have 'proper' running gear, or is it more comfortable (and stylish). I'll have to get red though, will match my face at the end of a run

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 10/04/2009 07:59

goblin as long as you have the correct shoes and you are comfortable in your clothing then I think you are doing fine. During winter when it's freezing it might be worth investing in some proper cold weather kit and maybe in summer when (ha!) it's boiling it might be worth getting a top that takes the sweat away from the skin in some amazing technological feat but you don't have to spend a lot. I run in a pair of 3/4 running tights left over from the days I was fit and an old (baggy) t-shirt. As for superfit you know the saying 9months to put baby weight on and 9 months to take it off well my LO is 9 months next week and I only realised 2 months ago that i still had all my baby weight!! Also I love fitness it's always been a hobby of mine, I have done my gym instructor course and hope to do my personal trainer course over the summer. Need to get my fitness up first however!

trillian, cross trainer great as it uses upper body as well as lower body, the more muscles used the more calories burnt. Have you tried the rower - quite intense but great for stuff like interval training. Body pump usually does tire you out but I walked into the class and the teacher said we are going to concentrate on upper body today, so it was obviously destined that I should do a run!

No exercise today, off to pub for lunch with friends and new baby. Will try and do W6r2 tomorrow.

Happy Easter everyone

goblincandoa5k · 10/04/2009 18:01

I managed to get out before the rain came in this morning, and managed w4r1 I am thrilled beyond words, can't believe i managed to run (verrrrry slowly) for 5mins!!!!!

I hope everyone is having a great time running and a very Happy Easter.

mileniwmffalcon · 11/04/2009 11:36

first good run for a looong time today, still haven't reclaimed my lungs altogether from this horrible cold, but much better than the relentless slog it's been the last few times out. it got tricky about half way through, but - somewhat surprisingly - got easier again after that. did my 5k route plus another half k to get to the end of the song (only the second time i've done the full 5k).

what surprises me is no matter how well/badly i feel i'm doing i always run at pretty much the same pace (somewhere around the 10.30 mm mark, give or take 10 secs).

i guess i should graduate to the proper runners thread now, but i feel all at home here - mind if i hang around a bit longer? i'm going to keep doing 2 x 30min runs in the week (hopefully getting further each time until i make the 5k in 30 mins which i'm nowhere near yet) and then make my weekend run a bit longer each time (did 35 mins today). until i get bored or it all feels too easy, which i suspect may be a way off yet

batgirl · 11/04/2009 12:27

oh Milenniwffalcon - please stay here! We need the support of people further down the programme.

I've had another break - I went on holiday (did take my running kit & ran along the cliff tops - glorious!) but have injured my foot. Hope to start again this week - have yet to crack W6 r3, although I think that is probably a head thing as then it means no more walk/run - which is a scary thought!

MissAnthrope · 11/04/2009 21:08

W3R2 for me today. I went out for the first time without the child/jogger combi and it was a very different running experience.

Am skipping R3 as need to get on track for the Race For Life and am aiming for W4R1 on Monday.

Well done Goblin! I'm slightly terrified of the five minute runs so I hope I do as well as you.

Mileniwmffalcon - don't leave!!

Batgirl - hope your foot feels better soon.

giraffesCantRunA10k · 12/04/2009 01:19

Hello all. Happy Easter weekend

Got new trainers today and gel insoles. Not run yet though as feel a bit under the weather. Looking forwards to trying them out.

nappyzonecannotcycleuphill · 12/04/2009 09:43

hello i went for my first rn yesterday - am trying to download podcasts onto my mp3 player but they wont go on is that because its not an ipod

I got some shiney new easter running trainers [bgin]

happy easter

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 12/04/2009 09:49

which MP3 player is it?

Did W6r2 yesterday, I have been sitting here wondering if I should do W6r3 today but I have to say I doubt it will happen.

batgirl - hope your foot heals soon.

giraffe - hope you feel better soon.

MissAnthrope - some of us found the jump from W3 to W4 quite difficult but you are probably fitter than most already due to having to push a buggy whilst running! Good Luck with W4.

mileniwmffalcon - hope you do stick around, or how about starting a 5K to 10K thread? (Not that I will be on it for a couple of months!)

nappyzonecannotcycleuphill · 12/04/2009 09:51

its a packard bell audio stick am trying to download ulleysys w1

giraffesCantRunA10k · 12/04/2009 10:25

Milenniwffalcon - dont leave! I post on both - am a beginner but training for a 10k in Sept. I dont really discuss how far I have run on the other one but just do general chat, both threads are good for different things. Im a thread slut I will just jump about!

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits Thanks scratchy feeling gone now - yay. But I think I did the right thing having 2 days off running. Will go off out today and test my new trainers - Im quite excited about it

nappy glad you found this thread, I replied to your other thread about insoles

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 12/04/2009 10:45

Is it this one
www.pocket-lint.com/reviews/review_summary.phtml/589/1613/packard-bell-audiodream-mp3-player.phtml

in which case i don't think it supports the podcat format.

Do you have other podcasts on there?

LibrasJusticeLeagueofBiscuits · 12/04/2009 10:51

I've had another look and the audiokey doesn't appear to support the podcast format either.
