Another thread to keep going!

good for you @Happleandhorange

Yeah pilates is blooming hard but it's so good for you. Well done being brave and giving it a go, and for focusing on your work. I love doing group fitness but I do the (slightly autistic traity) thing where I like people to be there, and then completely ignore them and just zone in on me. I like to be in the group, but ignored by and ignoring others.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 21/08/2025 15:36

Pilates terrifies me, Happle! (And I'm terrible at it.) Well done for getting stuck in though.

The gym has added a Hyrox class a couple of times a week and I thought I'd try it today. It was absolutely brutal.

OP posts:
BezMills · 21/08/2025 18:59

@MotherForkinShirtBalls hyrox sounds like hard work!

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 21/08/2025 20:56

Yeah, it's very intense Bez and I'm too old, fat, unfit and bockety for it! This was the workout we did earlier, each for 3 mins followed by 400m run. I will never do a hyrox event but I might do the class a couple of times a month to mix things up.

Keep on exercisathon

Oh good lord that looks like a form of torture. My knees ache at the thought of it.

afaloren · 21/08/2025 21:27

Hello, may I join? This seems a friendly thread.

I was very active as a child and teen (hockey, biking, dance) then as an adult became quite sedentary. In 2019 I fell back in love with exercise and was in the gym five days a week doing classes and all sorts but in 2020 I had a nasty accident (not while working out) that left me immobile. Because of the pandemic it was a long time before I could access the surgery and physio I needed.

I’m now mobile again but apart from walking my dog had stopped working out. I’d lost all my confidence.

Five weeks ago I went back to the gym. I’ve just been doing some fairly gentle cardio three times a week. On Tuesday I decided to add in a beginners’ kettlebell workout for some strength and I can barely walk today Grin But I know that’s normal when you do something your body isn’t used to.

I’m confident in how to improve and maintain cardio fitness but am unsure about how to approach weights. I do have to be careful of my knees - surgeon said no running, jumping or deep squats - but I’d love to feel stronger. I’m also interested in yoga and/or Pilates, both of which I have tried with YouTube videos at home.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 21/08/2025 22:42

Hello @afaloren you're very welcome 😊 It sounds like you've done a lot to make your recovery. I ended up with a frozen shoulder during covid and a delayed repair so I feel your pain on longstanding injuries. This group is great...lots of support and encouragement and I find it a good way to keep myself accountable, especially the many days I'm not feeling it.

Happleandhorange · 22/08/2025 07:44

I am injury city, if it helps. Frozen shoulder that then got broken in a bike accident three years ago. It now has two plates and five screws, so mobility is severely limited. Then there's my broken wrist which is coming right, but is still far from ideal. The real PITA is that I have noticed foot issues since starting gym so am seeing a podiatrist on Monday to see what's up with ankle (probably from latest accident).

So Bodybalance today was good. I can't do all the exercises because my shoulder won't take much weight. But I modified and just focused on keeping moving - I am so out of shape that I reason any motion is good for me. I also went on the elliptical for a bit, it was fun. I worked out how to make the TV on it show me some nice views, which was relaxing. And I listened to my favourite podcast (The Rest Is History). Always up for any interesting podcasts to keep me entertained and moving!

@Happleandhorange I'm glad you enjoyed Balance. I wasn't mad into it myself but I know that a lot of people really love that class.

@MotherForkinShirtBalls that actually looks like a mini Hyrox! Bladdy hell what a lot of different work!

I did 3 crossfits in a row and am going for 4 today. Tuesday was some kind of complicated weight lifting, and the workout was running and squats holding a bar overhead. Wednesday was working towards ring muscle-ups (I'm very much on step 1!) and the workout was rowing, going over boxes and dumbell picky-uppies. Yesterday was a different kind of complicated weight lifting and the workout was rowing, pressups, lunge walks, situps, bear crawls.

I have no idea what we're doing today, but I think I heard strict shoulder press, which sounds difficult but at least nice and simple for a change. I've got a bit of a skills overload brain backlog from doing too many new things in the last two or three weeks.

There are many aspects to crossfit, not all of which I love, but I really like the skill stuff. That's my catnip - finding something that's difficult and takes a bit of technique.

Happleandhorange · 22/08/2025 09:59

@BezMills I am not sure if I enjoyed it as a class or if I was just relieved to find that it was easier for me! It's interesting what you say about needing technique as a challenge, I find I panic as am very uncoordinated, so for me the simpler the better.

That class schedule is something else, I would collapse at the thought!

tryingtobesogood · 22/08/2025 10:04

2x 5k steps walking (weds and thurs).

strength class today - but I’m in pain from Wednesday’s class so not sure if I can manage it.

Happleandhorange · 22/08/2025 11:11

Is it shoulder pain? (Or am I confusing you with someone else?)

My wrist is unhappy tonight because when my shoulder was complaining about resting body weight on elbows, I briefly moved onto my hands - it seemed fine at the time but tonight I can feel it was a mistake. Heigh ho. You can only learn by trial and error I guess.

BezMills · 22/08/2025 11:14

The crossfit people are bladdy fit though, I'm just seriously impressed at what I see. I don't worry about me in comparsion (to be fair it's good that I don't do that because yeah crossfit people are absolute units a lot of them).

I just love to see people doing mad strong athletic things. It's quite inspirational.

afaloren · 22/08/2025 11:32

Thanks @MotherForkinShirtBalls !

Just back from the gym. Split my time between incline walking on the treadmill, elliptical and the dreaded stairmaster.

Pilates yesterday morning

BezMills · 23/08/2025 11:54

ooft, the crossfits last night were not kind! I was paired up with a strong chap and we did shoulder press together, which was decent. It was meant to be 65% of max, and he thought I was joking when I said 'that's the empty bar for me mate'. I did well and didn't get tempted (at all) to try and go bigger than what I thought was a good maximum. I just looked back at my workout logs from last time I did that exercise (well over a year ago) and I smashed the PBs from back then. Well happy.

The workout was horrendous, 1 minute to do 8 thrusters, 6 jumping pullups then burpees to fill the time, 1 minute off. 8 flipping times. After two goes I was suffering but I did all 8 rounds, absolutely k-nackered I was.

Rest day today, after 4 crossfitses on the bounce I need it!

Happleandhorange · 23/08/2025 19:33

What a great idea to keep an exercise log. I might try that. Thanks.

Happleandhorange · 24/08/2025 09:21

It's Sunday evening here. Tomorrow is the last day of my free trial. I feel good about signing up, I've had a really good nose around and this feels like the right gym for me for now.

Today I did the virtual cycle studio, mainly as a way to keep off my feet until I see the podiatrist tomorrow. I thought it would be awful especially as I was on my own, but it was nice. I cannot stand up and cycle for long as my wrist gets too sore holding onto the handlebars so I just cycled faster/slower in time with the routine. Then I went and did stuff in gym. I've written down a list of stretches I need to do as otherwise I forget. Finished with sauna which was lovely.

BezMills · 24/08/2025 09:42

@Happleandhorange sounds good. Was the cycle thing "The Trip"? I much preferred that to the "boot camp on a bike" energy in spin classes, reminded me of playing Wipeout on the PlayStation as much as anything else

Happleandhorange · 24/08/2025 09:52

No. They do have "The Trip" but this was something called Sprints, I think. It was to be fair a bit bootcampy! But obviously I am just taking what I can do and adapting, so feel less pressurised to keep up.

I stretched my legs and feet in sauna afterwards which seems to have helped with foot pain. The sauna is GREAT on a cold winter evening.

The only thing I didn't like was the constant reminders that they were closing soon.

afaloren · 24/08/2025 15:53

Went on a hike today, which counts unlike the usual dog walks! Had to pause a couple of times going uphill so my goal is to be able to complete that same trail without stopping to get my breath.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 24/08/2025 20:03

Hike sounds lovely.

I am slightly hungover today so my run with ds was a challenge.

Happleandhorange · 25/08/2025 10:58

It turns out from physio visit that I have a sprained ankle, dating from accident 3 months ago. Everything is strapped up and ultrasound in a week or so.
Physio said bike was fine so I went to gym and did that for a few minutes plus the bits of bodypump that don't involve too much pressure on feet - I just had an empty bar and used bodyweight. Also signed on the dotted line, committed for a year now!

I went on the bike today too @Happleandhorange did just over 5K and some incline walking. It was rammed! Some kind of terrifying circuits class going on.
