Is it just me or gym female room always so hostile

Apo1a · 10/02/2020 15:37

We just moved to a small middle class town from London .
I am now quite shocked how hostile is the new local gym female changing room.
it is like a pack and a tight knitted old pack who will give a lesson to all newcomers .

And this is a commercial chain one which I can’t name here .

I wonder whether this is a London vs small town thing . Or just typical female changing room thing ? But in London I didn’t have any of such drama .

I am in a small town. Our changing room has cliques but they are not hostile unless the person concerned is being antisocial. We have a small group of swimmers who drench the floor and then cover it in talc and they are pretty unpopular. Then there are those who refuse to use the baby change area and spread out their changing mats all over the benches. Then there are those who insist on grating their feet and leaving the hard skin shavings all over the floor. All of that lot tend to get pretty hard stares.

Out of interest, why can't you name the gym chain?

My gym is lovely and friendly, maybe I'm just lucky?

AuntieMarys · 10/02/2020 18:15

No nothing like that here

Greenteandchives · 10/02/2020 18:24

My gym changing room can get pretty hostile when people think it’s fine to take selfies in the changing room, or drip water all over the dry area instead of drying off in the shower area.
I am not averse to asking people politely to respect the rules.

imarocketman50 · 10/02/2020 18:26

I'm up north but everyone is super friendly in my gyms changing room.

puds11 · 10/02/2020 18:27

Why can’t you name it Confused

Mine is friendly and also a commercial chain Wink

my boy is 3 years old. Gym policy cut off is 8.

I got shouted at by some granny there For 5 mins and she carried on talking to herself .... basically about the world is mad ... how can boys be allowed inside female room. Why this gym has not got separate dry room and wet room etc bla bla bla
There were 2-4 members of staff there at the scene.
Then later on apparently she got told off according to duty manager who is a nice dude.

I was bit emotional as my son was scared and crying so I went to general manager
And wow all witness changed tune immediately : we see nothing hear nothing will say nothing .

then general manager : she is long term valuable customer who is very well known to us .
So we will let this pass .

But have to say : 80% ladies there are very nice. Apart from 1 or 2 odd balls .
It is like ice and fire experiences . Nothing in between.

and this is very middle class insular tight knitted small town where cost of living probably higher than London. And 97% is white.

Gosh that does sound upsetting. It's worse when you're not expecting it too and can make you kick yourself after for not reacting in the way you wanted to.
Why not name and shame the gym on social media.
I would personally be unhappy with that service and be finding a new gym. Then letting all and sundry know they are anti kids.

GFJoe · 10/02/2020 19:41

I've never noticed it personally.

Apo1a · 10/02/2020 19:42

I miss London where no one truly cares really....... Grin
We kind of regret moving out of London .
And
planning now already the next move back

By NOT buying anything more dear than ikea......

With easy come easy goes furnitures .... ready for the big move ... back .Grin

@Stayawayfromitsmouth

Yeah now every time before I enter that female room I have to mentally psychologically prepare for myself for entering a war zone .

But I got a sense now that granny is bit scared of me somehow. It’s like : you come I go ....

Hmmm, my gym is a bit like this to be honest. I wonder if it’s the same chain.

Not just the crazy locker room politics and death stares. But the managers who put up with all sorts of shit from long standing members. One long standing member at my gym was a total pita, screeching round the members lounge, one of the PTs swears she tried to poison him by putting tippex in his water bottle. Gym manager is just bothered about his balance sheet so wouldn’t dare upset her in case she left.

Apo1a · 10/02/2020 19:48

girls from age 6ish to women age 70ish quickly wrap their bodies up as if shocked to see my son suddenly ....
Then they try to dress / undress themselves in an extremely difficult way behind their own handmade cocoon .

@Apo1a it sounds like you’ve just had one bad experience. That could happen anywhere

Apo1a · 10/02/2020 19:51

@VivaLeBeaver

You make me laugh ....... death stares !!!! Precisely !!!!!
I think my son maybe will get emotionally scared by those Old angry Virgin Mary ssss death stares....
and becoming ..... well ..... scared of women . ...Grin

@VivaLeBeaver
This gym has thousands members at least..... I wonder really ? 1 long term member can be indispensable ?? You don’t need fresh blood?

Sorry forgot to say : it is full of unemployed women with 4x4 .
The older the more STERN type .......

I have to give her credit .... her body is hot .
as she is almost living there everyday .....

Is it david lloyd?

VivaLeBeaver · 10/02/2020 19:57

And yes, thousands of members but profit margins are ultra tight. Membership numbers are scrutinised weekly.

ooooohbetty · 10/02/2020 19:59

I use a gym changing room to get changed in. I don't talk to anyone. Have never noticed any hostility or cliques.

Apo1a · 10/02/2020 20:00

@Stayawayfromitsmouth

We are in a small town with not many other choices.
Unlike in London .... you can easily walk out and right walk into the next one around corner .

For example : I like curry .
Here it s like less than a handful..... with almost twice London price ...

For example :
Finding a flat ....
Limited stock and you have to kiss the ass of agency .

Seems a bit over-dramatic.

borntobequiet · 10/02/2020 20:09

Just go to the council one, if there is one.
My small town has a really nice one. No death stares, and no unnecessary conversations either (I don’t go to socialise).
