New thread all Smile

plink I love the circuit workouts but they always fool me into thinking they are going to be easy but they hurt!! Shoulder intervals are definitely the easiest of them all and there for my favourites Grin

Welcome ohmy - yes definitely join in. Well done on the asylum. I’ve never completed that - I’ve tried twice and each time after 2 wks I got ill so I concluded it didn’t agree with me. You’re obviously a beach body veteran! You might want to give max30 a try - like insanity but done in 30mins. It’s fab. Are you enjoying morning meltdown? I did about 3wks of it but lost interest.

Duein - I think we need your enthusiasm on this thread. I’ve kind of forgotten what my goals are Blush I just do my work outs/runs and plod on. I did a great intervals run on Thursday though - I hadn’t done it for a few weeks and id got a bit quicker which felt good. I’m on wk 3 of The Work which I’m now really enjoying. Today’s ended with 3x 1min intervals of chin ups but with your knees up. Impossible obviously. I was feeling a bit dejected as I was really struggling and the trainer then said ‘I don’t expect you to be able to do this without resting, and if you can you’re a fucking animal!’ That made me feel a bit better!

Long run tomorrow. Need to get out early before the rain.

Purpleraindeer · 06/06/2020 18:43

Hi roman - cross posted with you. Believe me 100 days of jerichos chat would put your DH off her!

dueindecember10 · 07/06/2020 07:01

@myohmywhatawonderfulday - Thanks so much for the review. It is definitely on my shortlist.

@Theromanempire - Really glad the hybrid is working out for you. I am thinking that I might do something that sees me through to October, then maybe try this hybrid.

Purpleraindeer - Hope you have a good long run. Glad you're enjoying the Work. I love that there is so much variety on BBOD although it does make choosing programs tricky!

ShowOfHands · 07/06/2020 21:45

Do you mind an interloper?

I'm a week away from finishing Insanity Max 30 and after a recommendation for what to do next. I have BBOD and can't decide. I can't BEAR Horton. I have tried but the man makes me want to rip off my arm and throw it at the screen.

I'm fit and v good at cardio and hiit (I can do most of Max 30 without maxing at this point) but probably need to work on both strength and flexibility as my weakest points. I have free weights, kettlebells and a pull up bar but prefer bodyweight work really.

Is it worth combining Piyo with something else?

I do a couple of 5k runs a week and a longer 10/12k run at a weekend too.

dueindecember10 · 08/06/2020 06:01

Hi @ShowOfHands Strength wise I would highly recommend LIIFT4. I have the Piyo DVDs from back in the day but found it to be a bit slow. I don't have a lot of free time to exercise so I favour programs where you are worked more intensively. Horses for courses though which is why I am enjoying BBOD. So much choice. Good luck with whatever you decide on!

ShowOfHands · 08/06/2020 10:44

Thank you. I've just had a look through Liift4 and I really like the guy leading it. Looks like a good mix of strength, hiit and core. I'm definitely going to try it.

Theromanempire · 08/06/2020 12:36

showofhands welcome to the thread Smile I am a huge advocate of LIIFT- have completed it about 4 times now and never get bored! Sounds like you will breeze through the cardio parts Wink but the weight lifting parts are amazing. They really focus on form, using heavy weights and building muscle!

OP posts:
dueindecember10 · 08/06/2020 14:15

@ShowOfHands Joel is definitely easy on the eye Wink

ShowOfHands · 08/06/2020 17:26

I like Joel's style. It's all well and good Shaun T screaming "POWER EQUIPMENT SWEAT" with joyful abandon but I'm rather too British for all the screeching and like some focus on technique.

I'm pretty good at bodyweight stuff but neglect anything needing equipment. But I'm 39 and while I have adequate strength and tone for my current size, I think as I age, decent strength and some building will stand me in good stead. Is it good on legs? I get a bit fed up with weights being so upper body dominant. I build shoulders/arms quite easily but need more work to achieve leg mass and definition.

It's lovely to find you all here. I don't have many peers who are remotely interested in working out the way I like to. DH is v keen and will always accompany me but his physiology is necessarily different and he faces different challenges.

I'm quite excited about moving on from Max 30.

PlinkPlink · 08/06/2020 19:15

Hello hello everyone!!
And hello to the newbies! Always great to see new people pop in!

Just wanted to see how you were all doing? How are things going with workouts and lockdown?

Liift4 is awesome showofhands I used to be on the Insanity bandwagon and struggled to find something that peaked my interest. But Liift4 was a game changer. Seriously so good.

I'm still very much pregnant so no baby yet to share with you all. I'm 38 weeks tomorrow and it's getting rather uncomfortable in here 😂 home birth was approved in the end though and we're blowing up the birthing pool tonight! The excitement!

I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to getting back into BBOD! I am so excited. Slow and steady though, I'm gonna take some smaller steps towards doing it... First ill be focusing on PFM, then knee exercises and walking, then slowly start a program. Any recommendations for easing back in? I was thinking 21 day fix but more like on an alternating days basis? Possibly?

I hope you're all well, I've missed you all xx

Theromanempire · 08/06/2020 19:42

plink OMG, so exciting that you are so close to baby pink arriving Smile Smile how about Piyo as a start? It is relatively gentle and has a good modifier? Or, my other suggestion would be to pick workouts that you enjoy and do them with no impact whatsoever so, yes, 21DF but following Kat at all times?

showofhands I am a proper Joel fan (as everyone on here knows) and his style is so much more laidback than the others plus he doesn't really do much of the preaching/inspiration shit that Autumn and Shaun T do which really annoys me. In terms of legs, yes LIIFT is really good for legs. There is a dedicated leg workout each week - sometimes with weights and sometimes just bodyweight cardio stuff but you will absolutely feel it in your legs! The leg workout in week 5 is generally viewed as the hardest workout in the whole programme (and there is a video of Joel doing the workout himself on YouTube and he is hurting and sweating!!)

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 08/06/2020 21:21

Wow 38 weeks. I never made it that far with either of mine but 36 and 37 weeks was challenging enough in the heat. Are you in the UK? I remember being desperate to get back to exercise. And just breathing normally! Good luck with the home birth. We had a Made In Water pool and we still use it as a paddling pool 13 years later.

I do like the sound of Joel. I just don't respond to being screamed at nor do I appreciate any of the throwaway inspo. Tell me how to maximise/correct/ensure form. I'm a human being, not a lobotomised squaddie.

Which weights did you use for Liift4. It said to ensure you have light, med and heavy available. 8, 10 and 15? Heavier? Lighter? Or just crack on and see what works?

Reastie · 08/06/2020 21:22

Hello to everyone, great to see some new faces.

Hello hello plink! I was thinking of you as it’s Ds’ first birthday this week so knew your date was coming up! So glad you got the home birth. My recovery back to workouts was pretty slow because of section, I did get a pn Pilates dvd which was quite good though. Only ten mins a day every day with progressively harder moves. Really helped my core and pelvic floor (both of which were non existent!). It wasn’t really exercise but it was all heading the right way iykwim.

Body balance here today and combat yesterday and run Saturday. Combat annoyed me as 3 of the tracks had kicks requiring more space than I have in my dining room so I couldn’t do it properly.

Showof I was going to say liift! Even though I’ve never done it I’ve heard a lot about it on the thread! I know what you mean about Tony. He does get a bit less annoying somehow over time, but there’s no escaping the cheese! He’s prob least annoying in hc22 imo. Less time for chat in it 😂. I feel the same about autumn, I just can’t get on with her stuff. I’d also recommend a free trial of Les mills on demand, it’s got some great things on there. I love body attack and body pump (you can do with free weights).

PlinkPlink · 08/06/2020 21:35

Oh thats a great suggestion with the PiYo Roman thank you! I havent even tried that yet so it'll be nice to do something completely new.

Oh man I agree 100% with Roman there. Legs in Liift? Killer 😂😂 I used to love leg day until I met Joel on screen. Feels so good once you've done it though!

Theromanempire · 08/06/2020 23:14

show are those weights kg or lbs? We have a range of weights from 1kg to 10kg but the lightest I use is 3kg (apart from one shoulder exercise which he encourages you to go really light and even no weight) but generally use 4-5 kg for most and 7.5kg for the chest exercises. However, my 1 tip would be to buy some wrist weights (the ones you wrap round wrists). I have 1kg ones and it allows me to adjust my weights more without having to buy more dumbbells.

OP posts:
dueindecember10 · 09/06/2020 06:29

@theromanempire - What a great idea. I have adjustable dumbells but I often have to pause the streaming to change weights. My weights also go up in 2.5kg increments so on some things I am in between weights. This would help bridge the gap. Genius!

@ShowOfHands I feel the same. My friends are generally runners so it's great to be able to talk BBOD without anyone's eyes glazing over through boredom!

@PlinkPlink How exciting - not long to go now! Am I right in thinking Autumn has some pre and post natal content on BBOD? If not maybe T25 (with modifier) or Piyo?

Hope everyone enjoys their workouts today.

ShowOfHands · 09/06/2020 11:55

They're kg. I tend to use 5s or 8s for a toning workout but have never looked to build. I have dumbells which I can adjust up to 20k as well as some 3k, 5k and 8k non-adjustable sets.

Theromanempire · 09/06/2020 14:17

If they are kgs, then those are hardcore weights and certainly heavier than the female cast members on the programme are generally lifting! I think you must be a lot stronger than you think you are then?

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 09/06/2020 16:54

The first clip I watched yesterday, the woman was using 20s. I assumed kg, maybe not!

I just have no idea what "lift heavy" means. I use my 5s for a quick 20 minute arm session while dinner cooks or similar but assumed "heavy" would mean bigger than this.

I'm not particularly strong. I can do pull ups (only about 5 before I start to struggle but can struggle on to 10 just about) and do proper press ups whether wide or military so I have some basic strength as a starting point.

Purpleraindeer · 09/06/2020 21:07

How lovely that there’s lots of chat on here!

Plink - so exciting. Not long now (I bet you’ve heard that a lot in the last few weeks!). I’m so pleased the homebirth is back on. You’ll be exercising again before you know it. I got back really quickly with no problems and I was very overweight and unfit so you’d be starting with an advantage.

Reastie - 1st birthdays are massive - It feels like it has gone fast.

Show of hands - welcome. It’s nice to have another max30 lover on this thread. I’ve done that one soooo many times - it gets you so fit. I really liked lift too. Basically the heavier weights the better for that as it is low reps. The other one worth trying if you want a bit more cardio (that is the one downside of lift) is 21 day fix extreme. It’s cardio and weights together so is a good compromise. I would also say The Work. But he swears a lot and does treat you like a deranged squaddie which it turns out I respond to! Blush I just did legs tonight and they are like jelly now so it does something effective.

Have a good evening all Smile

PlinkPlink · 10/06/2020 00:04

ShowofHands DS arrived at 38+5 so fingers crossed she'll follow in her brothers footsteps ha. This pool is a hire one but we've both said we'll get a pool next year 😂 God breathing normally... I'm looking forward to finally taking a full breath and feeling it.

With the weights, I'd suggest going through a few workouts and seeing how you go really... it took me a little while to work out which weights were pushing me where I needed and which were just too light for that exercise. So I'd write it down using the tracker sheet and highlight the ones that were too easy using that weight. So next time I knew to use the next step up. So trial and error really. There's no shame in having to drop down mid set as well... I actually found it a great burn doing it that way.

Reastie oh wow a year already?! That's gone super fast!! I remember so clearly how frustrated you had been with not being able to workout during your pregnancy. It must have felt so, so good even to do that little bit each day. It sounds like an ideal way to get back into it, can you remember what company it was? What are your plans for the little one's first birthday?

Hi @dueindecember10 👋 I knew Autumn did some pre natal but I'll check it out on the postnatal front. PiYo sounds pretty good to me right now.

Purple I might have heard it a bit Wink Mostly from myself actually ha. Reminding myself that there's nothing I can do, it's just a waiting game. I'm looking forward to it so much. With BBOD I really found an enjoyable way to stay fit and healthy (God I sound like an advert) and coming on here with you guys is such a great motivation. How has the running been? I guess ultra marathons are on pause atm with social distancing.

Reastie · 10/06/2020 10:42

Wow, it’s gone from tumbleweed to I can’t keep up!

Showofhands im now imagining you doing bb lifting like they do on the ‘beast’ workouts 😂. They are some heavy weights! I always think ‘lift heavy’ means heavy enough so you struggle a lot with the last 3 reps. By the end you couldn’t do more. But then they say I think to build muscle aim to do 8-10 reps per set and to more generally tone more like 12-15. I usually go for the latter and am feeling the burn by 8 and really struggling from 10 reps. It’s been a long time since I’ve done proper lifting though due to an elbow injury that won’t go away (despite the mri and specialist saying there’s nothing there now 🙄). I did restart doing body pump again but had to give up after a month because it just made the injury return worse again.

Plink, at nearly a year post birth and having had 9 months of pretty much bedrest before that, I really feel like in the past couple of months my fitness is at a decent place, and that’s after a section and only 2-3 workouts max a week and starting gently just walking. I feel like I have more work to go to get where I was, it that’s only because I haven’t had time to do more workouts. My body has really improved its fitness so much from where I was, it’s incredible. I bought this dvd but it was quite cheap. I’m sure you could find similar things online. If I find it I might be able to send you mine if you like, not like I’m having more children 😂. FWIW pi yo is pretty hard on the core, which is obv good but also I think to start you might need to build up to it if your core was as shot as mine was! I was so so frustrated not being able to do stuff initially (although I had a section so the recovery will hopefully be much shorter for you).

Reastie · 10/06/2020 10:43

Oh, I meant to say! One of my old step instructors is doing zoom aerobics classes so I might give it a try on Saturday. Not quite sure how it’ll all work and means missing out on my run, but I miss going to an actual class and being a live online class it might be a nice compromise. It’s also a bit routinely which I used to love and miss with bb and LMOD.

dueindecember10 · 10/06/2020 12:40

@ShowOfHands - The weights they refer to on BBOD are lbs not kg. That threw me to start with!

@Reastie - That's a great idea. Was only thinking this morning that no one would know if I dropped my weights down or skipped a set. The accountability of being on camera would be helpful when the going gets tough (which it did today on LIIFT4 leg day)

@plinkplink - hope you aren't kept waiting too long. The last few weeks are tricky waddling around!

@Purpleraindeer - I am a former ultra runner. I burnt out a bit last year and went from smashing marathons and ultra marathons to hating ALL running. Keeping my hand in with some shortish runs with the kids but have temporarily really lost my love for it. Hoping a little break from it will give me my hunger back

Theromanempire · 10/06/2020 20:30

showofhands yes the cast's weights are definitely lbs, not kg. I agree with Plink that it is a bit trial and error at first but you soon get to grips with the different exercises and what weights you can do Smile

reastie my clubbercise instructor started zoom online classes from day 1 of lockdown. They are ok but it is not the same and the novelty has worn off now so I am not doing them any more. I need the buzz of a class!

plink fingers crossed that the baby arrives soon and the birth goes smoothly Smile
