I never run until I've "been" as I worry about this!

My calves are still sore from Sunday's long run. Not pulled sore, just what did you do that for sore.

I'm running no matter what tomorrow as off to Spain Thursday at 6am and the weather says max temp of 37 with 55-60% humidity.

I'm not an early bird apart from when I have to for work, but I think I'm gonna have to be up and out for 7am latest!

Alex3101 · 16/07/2019 22:26

Well done @LenoVentura and @CarrotPuff on the runs.
I did a couple of easy miles this evening, my legs are still a bit tired after the weekend but I'll start upping the mileage again later in the week.

I’m hoping for a run tonight and for no bowel issues. But I need to go to the loo first. It is like psychologically I am my own worst enemy. I know I need to go to the loo so I can’t ARGH

chesney Hope morning run ok

LenoVentura · 17/07/2019 17:22

Bowels are like that Hope I'm afraid. Try not to over think it, take the buscopan and see what happens. Best of luck.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/07/2019 21:53

Can you do a little loop first?

5.5 really hilly miles yesterday, 4 gentle miles today.
Yoga is definitely helping my muscles to be not tight. No sore bits after yesterday's run. I think the sports massage was really really helpful last week too, so thank you for the suggestion.

HopeCrescent · 17/07/2019 22:33

I took the Buscopan as recommended and it was ok, so thank you for that tip.
I only did 3.7 miles though. So not a long test.
kitten Good on yoga - love yoga! Got a 6.30am class tomorrow. Zzzzzz

Stingynettle · 17/07/2019 23:48

Glad your run was a success Hope. 3 mile tempo run this evening for me.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/07/2019 05:57

Yay Hope :) Hooray for calm tummy runs.

BusterTheBulldog · 18/07/2019 10:50

Glad sports massage was helpful ohyiubadkitten, I need to book in soon too and also been missing my podiatry appts, meaning my feet are killing!

61 miles since last post, horrid interval session yesterday in the heat, nearly finished me off!

That's great news Hope. Keep taking it for as couple of days and see what happens on a longer run. You may well have nipped it in the bud and sort of reset your system.

HopeCrescent · 18/07/2019 11:46

Thanks all! Love the idea of having reset my system Leno!
I will try a longer run tomorrow. Fingers crossed! It’s all a bit of a mind game isn’t it.
Yoga was blissful this morning.

BusterTheBulldog · 18/07/2019 13:49

5 lunch miles from me today, supposed to be 1m Warm up, 3 miles MP, and then 1m CD. All were pretty much the same, I do have a danger of a lot of my runs coming out at same average pace, never sure how much I should worry about this!

447.6

HopeCrescent · 18/07/2019 14:10

Yesterday I did one lap of park, running fast then walking in an attempt at intervals... is that what I should be doing?
I don’t know what tempo running really means can you explain? And Buster what is MP and CD? Medium pace and cool down?

LenoVentura · 18/07/2019 14:20

I'm the same Buster. I like to think I'm a front runner Grin because I go off fast and stay fast for as long as I can Grin. I'm absolutely hopeless at pacing myself, which killed me in my HM on Sunday.

emummy · 18/07/2019 15:30

One of the best ways to get faster is to run at different paces so if all your runs are at one pace you may not see as much improvement. Tempo pace is quite hard; if I am training for a half I do tempo runs at 10k pace, trading for a 10k I do them at 5k pace - or at least that effort, I don't really look at my watch during the run.

BusterTheBulldog · 18/07/2019 16:59

Sorry hopecrescent mp is marathon pace (although really medium works as well!) and you are correct that cd is cool down. Your recovery on that interval may be a little long hope, maybe try half a lap recovery and then a full lap hard.

On my interval sessions by intervals are pretty good (I think) however my overall pace including the slower bits generally equals about the same as my other runs. Today’s run all miles were quicker than my planned marathon pace which again means I end up with the same average pace.

I am getting better at keeping some of my long steady runs slower, but if I start quicker my brain seems to think it’s best to hang on. I wouldn’t mind if I wasn’t worried about injury! I think it’s cos I’m so far off my previous pre injury paces that I try and hang on whenever I can which is likely a recipe for disaster!

TriSkiRun99 · 18/07/2019 21:11

The heat has just killed my running mojo lately. Even going out early it’s too hot and I just overheat - just about managed 8k this morning had hoped to do 10k. Off to French Alps tomorrow so hoping a break from running for 9d will reset my mojo Smile hope to do lots of swimming and some hill walking instead. I’m eyeing up a trail HM next year so that will really give a goal to work towards over the winter, as I've done 3xHMs but they were all mostly flat road running ones, and DH prefers trail runs along the coastal path here but the terrain can be a killer.

Next week is potentially extremely hot, especially in central southern and eastern areas. We might all need to keep an eye on it.

AuntieStella · 19/07/2019 13:52

I've just bought some Body Glide, ahead of possible hot weather and because I had my first ever chafing issues on a really hot day a fortnight ago.

I've had a steady week - one session of intervals, a 10k run and a Pilates class so far.

BusterTheBulldog · 19/07/2019 15:22

Track session for me last night. Finally realised that if I think of 200m sprints as a 30 second sprint I go faster. Sadly only one more track session left to put into practise!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 19/07/2019 16:50

Hello everyone. I'm in Spain and wow it's hot! 34 yesterday.

Ran 4 miles the day before I went and then got up at 6am today and ran 4 here. The heat was ok, my phone said 23 but humidity said 55% and the first two miles were tough. Probably not helped by the sangria I was downing the night before. However last 2 the pace picked up by 30 seconds a mile.

Tomorrow I'll try go a bit further now I've got my bearings. Looked on Strava and saw a 6 mile route someone has done.

emummy · 20/07/2019 08:44

Well done on getting those holiday runs in Chesney!
Wet and warm run this morning, made harder by my legs feeling like they were full of concrete! Survived a mixture of tempo run & hill reps. Now time to walk the dog

I definitely agree with body glide. I forgot to put mine on on one run this week and got rubbed raw.

Well done Chesney!

I feel a bit guilty that I didnt run last night when I meant to. I decided to have a lovely soak in the bath instead Blush

I struggle with the idea of tapering for races, I've got a mid week 10k. Is a 5k run tomorrow and a gentle one Tuesday (the night before) about right ?

LenoVentura · 20/07/2019 09:07

I'm not really thick, but I do struggle to understand how to vary the pace in training. I just go out, run whatever distance I've planned as fast as I can, aiming for each km to be the same, as far as possible. Then next time I go out, I try to do it again, but faster. I just can't persuade myself to do it any other way because I'm ruled by the watch. I'm sure that's what did for me in the HM at the weekend. Seems to work for 10k though. i need a coach!
