This is a thread to talk about all things running and support each other through the highs and lows. All are welcome, from absolute beginners to experts!
We keep a running total of everyone's miles for the month, so feel free to add yours on. Current total for March is:

Varying the pace has definitely helped me, I found it reset my pace to be faster without me noticing, so sometimes I'll just go for a little pootle around a trail, or I'll run as fast as I can up a hill. If I'm bored I'll play running tree to tree mixing it up with sprints, jogs, walks or if no one is around silly lungey stride things. When I went out with dd the other day I sprinted ahead and then gently jogged back.

emummy · 20/07/2019 10:20

Leno my last watch I could set it to buzz at me if I went out with a certain pace - can yours do that? It's a good thing to have an easy paced run to let your legs recover, I think the idea is that the improvements are not made during the fast run but in the recovery period that follows. So if all your runs are hard you are not giving your muscles a chance to rebuild. Fartlek, where you run hard, say to the next tree, then jog, then run hard again can be helpful if you find it hard to vary your paces. Or interval sessions where you run hard for 2 or 3 minutes and jog in between to recover.

19 mile long run this morning. Got completely soaked in a downpour at about 16 miles in. Not entirely unwelcome as it is pretty warm here today.

Is bodyglide better than Vaseline for chafing? I've tended to use Vaseline but I'm still getting the odd bit of chafing.

495.4 (19 today plus an easy 3 miles on Thursday)

AuntieStella · 20/07/2019 20:34

I've achieved one aim for the first half of the year (of running 4 Half Marathons)

I'm about to do Autumn race entries. Aim is again to do 4 Halfs. Would I be insane to make one of them a 20miler instead?

Stingynettle · 20/07/2019 20:39

If you can comfortably do a half, I expect you would be able to manage 20 miles without a huge amount of extra training. Perhaps just a few long runs over 13 miles. Go for it!

AuntieStella · 20/07/2019 20:49

I think I was half-hoping for someone to say that!

When I am under prepared, I can still get round a Half. When well prepared, I'm

emummy · 20/07/2019 21:04

You definitely can, go for it!

Thank you!

I'm having a 'rest' month in my annual cycle. I find running in summer really tough, but if I can keep going, even though only more moderately right now, I know I reap the rewards come September

Forget to add, horrible slow and sweaty Parkrun this morning

Thanks emummy. I think I need to get a stopwatch, or run to heartrate (I wear a HRM), rather than take my app because the app makes me race myself Hmm.
V impressed with all the long distance runners, it's definitely not for me - that said, I'm doing Tough Mudder next weekend which is best part of ten miles, although not constant running of course.

emummy · 21/07/2019 10:57

Long run in the forest today, ran out into the hills, it was beautiful and not another soul to be seen. Well, until the mountain bikers started appearing but I was nearly done by then! Wonderful run, with the advantage that the visitor centre toilets were open. Luxury!

I’m very quietly going to mention that I’ve been back out there and went for a run this morning. (Every time I’ve tried to get back in to it recently life or illness has scuppered all plans. So I’m sneaking up on it WinkGrin)

well done Irun

Chesneyhawkes1 · 21/07/2019 16:51

Well done Irun.

Well I'd like to say I've adjusted to running here but it's still hard work 😂

Did 5 miles yesterday and today 8.1 miles. I'm taking comfort in the fact that running will feel so much easier when I'm back home and the routes I thought were hilly, will feel easy now 😂

I'm really enjoying my early morning jog runs though. Seeing the sea and all the beautiful scenery makes up for the fact it feels like there's not much air to breathe.

It sounds beautiful!
I'm trying to work out whether to take my running gear on holiday. I've been there before and it's isolated and very hot. It didn't feel quite safe last year.

Very gentle 5k today. I'm bursting with energy at the moment, but trying to keep it throttled back ready for my race.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 21/07/2019 19:52

It's very hot and the humidity is the killer for me. I've felt safe though. Even today when I got a bit lost and was in the middle of nowhere.

I run at work at 3am around empty streets though, so I'm probably not the best to advise on safety 😂

Today I've lspied the biggest set of steps I've ever seen. From by the beach right up the side of the hill.

Think I'll give them a bash Wednesday before we fly home. No way I'll make it without walking mind

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/07/2019 20:40

Grin a challenge! I like it!

Stingynettle · 22/07/2019 23:45

5 miles intervals this evening. Warm but quite windy so fairly pleasant.

Hot & sunny pyramid session along the riverside, plenty of shade there thankfully. Felt good, cold shower afterwards felt amazing!

17 miles since last post. 4.1 miles on sat for easy parkrun and 13 for long run on sun. I felt terrible on sun, hungover so more dehydrated than normal, not good!!

I have a question that I'm hoping regular runners might be able to help with. I recently did the C25k program and ran my first Parkrun a couple of weeks ago (yay!). The challenge now is to keep running over the summer, through the school holidays when I have very little freedom, and through the hot weather.

This morning I went out running at 7.30am, before DH left for work, and I see this as being a brilliant solution to my problem. However, I find it really hard to run on empty. I was fine for the first 4k, but the last one, which also happened to be uphill, was so hard with no food in my system. If I eat though, I need to leave it a couple of hours before I run, otherwise I feel sick and my legs feel like lead.

So my question is this: How can I get around this? Would eating a banana as soon as I get up help? Are they light enough to digest without the negative effects I have from eating say, a bowl of muesli? I really want to run first thing, but I need to find a way to do it without running out of energy. TIA.

Pinkarsedfly · 23/07/2019 14:03

Hi zafferana

I find a latte and a banana about 30 mins before I set off perfect for me.

zafferana · 23/07/2019 14:46

Thanks Pinkarsedfly. I'll give the banana a go on Thurs morning then!

emummy · 23/07/2019 18:55

A smoothie might work if the banana doesn't. Dh often has a banana and it works for him.

A very gentle 5k walk run shakedown. dd wasn't very good in the heat tonight. I also had dinner beforehand which wasn't a great idea.

7.5 miles last night, don’t think I’ve ever sweated so much!
