This is a thread to talk about all things running and support each other through the highs and lows. All are welcome, from absolute beginners to experts!
We keep a running total of everyone's miles for the month, so feel free to add yours on. Current total for March is:

204.3

Hello. Welcome hope. See you back very soon Paulhollywood - did I read properly you had a baby?? Well done Auntiestella . Hope the hip is getting better Carrot. And apologies if I’ve got any of that wrong or missed anyone out.
So much for my returning fighting fit this week. I do one run and then get totally wiped out with a bug - it’s not been pretty!! Hoping that if I continue resting today and I can get out again in the next couple of days.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/07/2019 08:54

Ugh IRun! I hope you feel better soon.

I don't understand how distances can be mapped so differently. My running groups distances vary by about a km.

I use garmin connect. It seems to get my race distances spot on.

IRun4Me · 07/07/2019 08:54

Hope Sorry I meant to answer your question. I used to use an old IPod that just did steps and was actually surprisingly accurate.
I now use Strava and my Fitbit. I’m not convinced how accurate they actually are and sometimes the maps show me running through people’s houses etc. I tend to use it as a guide rather than exact. Not sure if that was a helpful answer Grin

HopeCrescent · 07/07/2019 10:09

Thanks for the replies. I think I’ll use an average of them. I suppose the way to answer it properly would be to run on a track or something but that would be v boring (well it would be for me!)

Thanks for the welcome and hope you feel better soon IRun

emummy · 07/07/2019 10:28

Congrats on the baby Paul, hope you had a good time at parkrun.
Sorry you're not well Irun, hope it doesn't last long.
Good luck today Leno!
Welcome Hope! Trackingvruns can be tricky; I learned when we were setting up our parkrun that often things like garmin watches are inaccurate if your route has hills, a lot of trees, or tall buildings. We had to take a trundle wheel round to get an accurate distance! My garmin runs pretty close on races so I think just choose one & don't look at anything else!
Well done AuntieStella, great result!
Easy run this morning, nice & cool & hilly!

Done it - hot but felt strong despite being soooo nervous before I set off. I wanted to run my age - 56 mins- but had to settle for 58:27. Knees are killing me!

HopeCrescent · 07/07/2019 13:58

Well done Leno! In hot weather and with sore knees too! Hope you can rest for the rest of the day.

LenoVentura · 07/07/2019 14:54

Thank you Hope.
I use MapMyRun as I find it more reliable than Strava (can't seem to get Strava to pick me up consistently). Today MapMyRun called the 10k mark with 300m still to go to the finish line, but I suspect that was partly because the road funnels at that point and there was some dodging round slower folks to be done. At a couple of other points in the race the difference was only 50m or so. I find it to be sufficiently accurate and not meaningfully different from Garmin or Apple when I run at home with friends who have those.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 07/07/2019 15:03

Thanks for all the baby wishes; more than I had in real life, nobody gives a toss about the 3rd 😁

Ok so I need moral guidance here. DD is 4 next Feb.

She loves going to “watch the runners” at Parkrun.

Today she went to watch the runners at junior parkrun and my god she was so upset she couldn't take part as she’s not yet 4.

She’s been chatting solidly about it since.

0

Do I hold her back until she’s actually 4 or do I pretend and fix her DOB so she can take part?

I truly don’t know. She wants to and 2k is a good distance for me and (recovering from injury) DH to do to get back in the saddle....

WWYD? I’m honestly on the fence.

emummy · 07/07/2019 16:29

I would wait till she's 4; maybe you could look for races that do children's races so it's fun and she gets a meal! I think the age 4 rule is from UK athletics, not sure. But then I'm on a parkrun core committee, rule breaking makes me nervous!

Not a meal. I'm sure you feed her all the time! A medal I meant!

Well done Leno!

Off road run for me today as my hips felt tight and bit been sleeping well this set of night shifts.

140.3

LenoVentura · 07/07/2019 18:00

Thank you Chesney. Half marathon next week is unknown territory for me, hope it's not as hot as today 🥵. I'm aiming just to enjoy it and get round, I was chasing a time today, but I won't be doing that over double the distance 😯.
Hope your run today helps with your sleep.

CarrotPuff · 07/07/2019 18:03

Thanks everyone. I'm not actually in pain. It's just a tiny bit sore when I walk downhill or when I was running. Wouldn't call it painful, but it made me very conscious that it's there. The run did make it worse, and I felt it more when just walking so definitely need to have a break. I think I overdid it on a fast run the week before ☹️

Can't remember who said it, but I'm definitely a bit lopsided. If I get hip flexor pain, it's always worse on my right. I don't know how to fix it though 🤷‍♀️

Oh and congrats on 10k Leno, I don't think I'd be able to do 10k in under an hour, I'm pretty slow!

I use RunKeeper app when I run, it's pretty accurate.

Stingynettle · 07/07/2019 20:45

Hello, mind if I join you? I'm training for a marathon (my first!) In October and this seems to be a very friendly and supportive thread.

18.4 miles this morning so feeling pretty knackered now.

158.7

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/07/2019 21:37

That's great going at this point Stingy. (or actually at any point given I've only done a half) Well done!

Well done Leno, that is a really good time :)

I wouldn't fix her DOB Paul, cos when she does run you want her times accurate for her age Wink

I'm still accompanying dd alongside her C25K journey, so we did 2.5 miles today. Once she gets her stamina up she's going to be good. In the run bits I glanced at my watch and we were running at a bit faster than my race pace. I've got a feeling that she's going to end up training me at this rate.

emummy · 07/07/2019 21:40

Welcome Stingy! I'm doing a marathon in October too. Impressed that you're up to 18 miles!.

OP posts:
Stingynettle · 07/07/2019 23:05

Thanks guys. I've done a few halfs in the past and often do 12 miles or so as a weekend long run so it hasn't taken too long to get up to 18 miles. I'll be having a lower mileage week next week- I don't fancy doing myself an injury!

LenoVentura · 08/07/2019 07:12

Thanks Kitten. Amazing work Stingy, I can't imagine doing a marathon. I'm doing this one half then dropping back to max 10k and will only do two more of those this year - one on-road and one off-road as I need to preserve my knees for my other fitness activities.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/07/2019 21:35

I took your advice and had a sports massage today. Wowzzers! some of my muscles were super tight. They felt very different afterwards. One calf was pretty sore for a few hours but it's eased off.

emummy · 09/07/2019 12:00

It's quite an experience, that first sports massage! I saw the physio yesterday & she was very helpful. I don't have plantar fasciitis, I have some inflammation in the fat pad under my heel. She attacked it with her thumbs which was not fun, then taped it up. Best thing is I am to keep running as normal! So intervals in the rain this morning, managed a good pace. Now coffee time, then trying to keep the children entertained on a wet day in the first week of the holidays.

Hi! The numbers at the bottom of some of your posts? Is that miles/ km run? Since when?

LenoVentura · 09/07/2019 15:25

That's this month's total for the thread contributors in miles Hope. You can add yours as you do them, then it sets back to zero at the start of the new month.

HopeCrescent · 09/07/2019 16:25

Ah thank you! I’ll add mine in too then for month so far...

183.6

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/07/2019 21:14

That's super news emummy!
It was an experience. He pulled a slightly Hmm face when he asked me to relax my leg and I said it was. Grin

Feel slightly back to how I was after launching myself over a tree root and ended up in a sort of extreme lunge. Didn't fall on my face though so that's something.

8 miles today. Trail running suits me.
