What is it with some men? No lanes in the pool last night and only three people in the pool. We were all happily swimming (or walking) straight up and down rather than clockwise. I was on the end next to the wall ( I’d been in there the longest). This man got in and decides to swim a very splashy flashy crawl in the one foot gap between me and the wall. Luckily I’d just about finished because no way would I have budged for him.

BestIsWest · 13/09/2019 15:47

Ooh good luck with the gala!

MzHz · 13/09/2019 17:07

Argh @BestIsWest, that’s crap! I’d have said something- like you have the entire pool to swim in and you think it’s decent manners to splash up and down in the 1m between me and the wall? Really?

Mind you, I’d also have probably taken him on and beat him AND then turned and done another few 25m lengths back to back to show him...

We get less shit these days, and public pool sessions are maddening, I loathe them, precisely for this kind of behaviour.

We’ve done block starts along the way @TriSkiRun99 and I’m not too bothered by them so much, (famous last words..) it’s more the fact that everyone else has decades of swimming experience and galas under their belts and I don’t. I think I should hold my own on a couple of the strokes... but I’m not doing fly - I can only just about make 25m (badly) no way I’d survive 50m in race conditions

BestIsWest · 13/09/2019 19:04

Lol @MzHz. I was getting out anyway and didn’t want to spoil my zen mindset! I’d never have beaten him speed-wise but I bet he only did 4 lengths and then went to sit in the jacuzzi (Btw what IS it with men and jacuzzis - the one in our pool is always full of men who sit in there for hours and don't go in the pool at all).

Bcnamechanger · 13/09/2019 19:16

@seasidepebbles I get that too, but I've worked out that in my case is because I'm raising my head to look ahead. It goes away if I concentrate on being able to see the bottom of the pool (looking directly down rather than ahead). Needed a breathing adjustment but...

Sorry, am new but I do swim (badly). I can't do anything other than breaststroke and I only do 20-30 minutes four times a week. This week I discovered the joys of a 2m deep 50m pool. I'm campaigning to sell the house and buy a pool.

TriSkiRun99 · 13/09/2019 21:48

seasidepebbles neck pain would suggest your body alignment isn’t quite right. Do you put your head in the water to breathe out? Do you have a straight body in the glide portion with head under water after the kick part? Check out some of the you tube videos they may give you some clues.

Quick 1km swim at lunchtime today, tried to focus on pushing the water behind me and gliding in FC. I’ve got a short Tri with a pool swim on Sunday and I find it hard to swim smoothly under pressure especially if the water gets choppy and my breathing gets panicked. So I was trying to focus on being calm today but improve the efficiency of my stroke. Fingers crossed it pays off on Sunday.

TriSkiRun99 · 14/09/2019 08:06

Started watching sink or swim SUC Gosh they are SO brave. It does say over 18 viewing but I’ve not seen anything so far that is O18 yet, I’d like to watch it with my DD12 has anyone seen anything unsuitable yet? We watch Apprentice together if that’s a guide Grin

MzHz · 14/09/2019 10:06

Bad language - fuck and derivatives to be precise, nothing otherwise

Might also be because of the appeals for donations? Is that something you need to be 18 for?

TriSkiRun99 · 14/09/2019 11:03

Thanks I thought it might be the language which isn’t too bad and certainly no worse than she hears at school 🙄and the language was in context I felt - I know I’ve certainly sworn when frustrated at myself, so I’ll watch the 1st one with her (again) and see what she thinks.

TriSkiRun99 · 14/09/2019 11:07

It’s for a good cause and hopefully will inspire others to get into swimming but I hope it doesn’t diminish the effort that goes into cross channel swimming. Our local club has mentored a few swimmers to do it and a guy is on his 2year training journey at the moment it’s really hardcore seeing him post about 8m sea swims before work and the seasickness making him vomit. Really tough challenge.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 15/09/2019 11:27

Hi, please can I join you? My youngest has now started school and I have free time to dedicate to fitness. I walk daily and clock up 25 miles a week, cycle 11 miles and want to add swimming too.

lljkk · 15/09/2019 11:34

Neat, DtPea! How much time can you put to swimming, how often?
(I need to get heck off of MN & go swim now myself)

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 15/09/2019 11:38

Financially I'll only be able to go once a week for however long I can manage. I don't drive and no local pool so will cost a fair whack in either bus or train fares. The route isn't safe to cycle or walk either otherwise I'd happily do so.

TriSkiRun99 · 15/09/2019 15:49

Welcome DrPeat

Did my triathlon this morning and SO pleased I had a great swim knocking 2mins off my time last year. I really focused on smooth long strokes and forgot my legs kicking 😂but it worked Yah.

BestIsWest · 15/09/2019 16:49

Welcome DrPeat.

Well done Tri, I’m in awe of you . I dream of doing a triathlon but I’m still on week 2 of C25K and I haven’t been on a bike other than in the gym for about 5 years.

A few family members are down in Tenby today doing the IronMan. I can’t imagine being that fit - although they are both 10 years younger than me.

MzHz · 15/09/2019 17:11

Yay! Well done @TriSkiRun99!!!

tommyshaircut · 15/09/2019 17:26

I'm doing the Aspire Channel swim challenge - 12 weeks to do 22 miles. Started a week ago and done 4 so far.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 15/09/2019 17:47

I'd love to run but sadly am not built to do such a thing. I too am in awe so bloody well done! I've walked 30 miles this week doing the school run. My 4yo has done most of those with me bless him. We live in a hilly place too so it's hard going at times.

MinnieMountain · 15/09/2019 20:55

Well done Tri.
DH and I passed the Rutland Water one yesterday. It looked looked hard.

SushiGo · 15/09/2019 21:27

Well done Tri!

flamingnoravera · 15/09/2019 21:31

I've decided to buy some fins for lane swimming drills. Just to break up the session really. Any suggestions for the best fins for use with a kickboard?

TriSkiRun99 · 15/09/2019 22:04

Thanks Blush not good at taking praise but was really pleased to see I was making progress on my swim Smile tried hard to lengthen strokes and push the water out behind me. That and I absolutely nailed the bike leg Grin honestly anyone can have a go there were all shapes and sizes there, I mainly learnt to swim FC a couple of years ago so I could have a go at a mini-Tri. I was super nervous though...the starting bit doesn’t get any easier!

Sorry I don’t use fins nora as they hurt my back, but my kids do. We just looked on Sports Direct for some. But ProSwimwear sometimes has offers.

MzHz · 16/09/2019 10:08

Fins - you need the short training fins - I got mine from pro swimwear I think, could have been Amazon

They’re the maru ones, they’re fine and a few in my squad have them and recommend them.

flamingnoravera · 16/09/2019 11:45

Thanks for the fin recommendations, I'll have a look online. I figure if I've got to swim in the fast lane I might as well get faster!
