London Marathoners 2018

Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

About 20 seconds max (based on garmin splits!). Basically there is a public right of way and the farmer hates people using it so had put barely visible chicken wire across the track which I tripped on!

Blackspaniel1 · 06/03/2018 07:22

Hi Theonlyoneiknow god I'm glad you're ok, that must have been scary! Not sure putting chicken wire across a public right of way is legal....

Wow Loudest 13 miles on a treadmill is some achievement. I can't even do 3! I'm not a treadmill runner at all, so just didn't run last week when snow was bad.

I managed 18.1 miles on Sunday in 3 hours. The last 3 were v hard and involved bits of walking and positive talking to myself, and my daughter who is running it with me.....' we can do this, only x miles to go'.... etc. I did get sworn at a couple of time by her when things got tough Grin, and that old favourite 'who decided running a marathon was a good idea?' when it was her that entered us both in to the ballot in the first place!

Still, we are on track, only 2 more very long runs left, then tapering Shock where has the time gone?

Blackspaniel1 · 14/03/2018 14:55

Oops looks like I have killed the thread Grin how are we all doing?

I have just done 8 miles this afternoon, 13 Monday which was my Sunday short/long run delayed, miserable wet and windy!

Go a 20 miler planned for next Monday, and also go a very sore Achilles tendon which is not going away, so making running that bit less enjoyable.

What has everyone else been up to?

Theonlyoneiknow · 14/03/2018 16:35

Hi All! Am doing ok but getting sooo tired of it all now - the sticking to a plan, the lack of free time, the exhaustion! BUT musn't complain too much as I had to stop running completely for 6 months due to injury last year!

37km on my plan for Friday (rain forecast!) then start to wind down! 4 weeks till Boston, getting a bit excited !

LoudestRoar · 14/03/2018 16:55

Hi all! Going well here. 17.5 miles due on friday, then a mini taper. Then 20 miles due over Easter weekend... luckily will be staying with the inlaws, so they can look after dcs while I recover...

Tulipchoc · 17/03/2018 08:05

Hello! Well done for keeping going. I'm also exhausted and didn't realise how much energy the training would suck from me. My longest run so far is 17 miles. I've got a few niggles but looking forward to tapering! Not long to go now. We can do this!

LoudestRoar · 17/03/2018 12:05

Well done tulip
17.5 done yesterday. I. Am. In. Pain....

Tulipchoc · 19/03/2018 22:26

Hope you've recovered now Loudest, good work! How's everyone else doing?

Theonlyoneiknow · 20/03/2018 12:44

Longest run done ! Was utterly foul weather - had a little cry before I went out but that helped me.

2 more hard weeks then time to TAPER! Can't wait :-)

Blackspaniel1 · 22/03/2018 06:29

Hi all, it's so nice to know we are all feeling the same Grin

I planned a 20 mile run on Monday but my running buddy (daughter) was poorly, so we rearranged for Weds, but knowing we would have to go later afternoon, and finish the last, at least, 6 miles in the dark. I am a total morning runner, so wasn't looking forward to it. We did it, in 3.5hours dark, rain and wind for the last part, but we did it!

The only thing I struggled with was keeping my gels and liquid down. Think I didn't leave enough time for my late lunch to digest and just felt like I was going to be sick as soon as took anything in. At least I know to prepare better for the day.

One more long run of 22 due week after next then taper.... and I am relieved to be close to that now.... I love running, just not marathon training!

SandunesAndRainclouds · 24/03/2018 20:08

Apologies for the absence!

Managed to get 20 in the bag today. Happy with time, amazed that I managed it running alone. Previous long run was 15 which was three weeks ago... very glad it is done and next week I can still do a LSR but won’t have the elusive 20 hanging over me!!

LoudestRoar · 25/03/2018 10:57

I'm aiming for 20 on Good Friday. Am on a mini taper this week, so 6.5 on the plan. Only going for 3 though, as having knee trouble. It's strapped up at the moment, so will see how I get on...

LoudestRoar · 25/03/2018 10:57

Well done sanddunes!

LoudestRoar · 25/03/2018 14:24

Just back from my 3 miles. Knee feeling much better, although not fully healed.
When is everyone's last long runs? I'm planning 20 on Friday, then I can enjoy some guilt free chocolate....

hillbilly · 25/03/2018 17:00

Hello again not been on the thread for ages. Did 20m last Sunday and another 20 today. Now my tapering starts. Haven't checked my midweek runs but it's 17 next weekend then 10, 10 then the big day! Very excited also very tired 😓

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 25/03/2018 19:36

I'm having a tiny freak out. I'm doing Brighton not London so I have 3 weeks to go. Am in the middle of a ten day stretch at work and with the snow we've had this month I've run less miles than I have for over a year! Need to engage positive mental attitude. Worked out I've run 1200 miles since I started training in January 2017 but feel like I'm going to balls it all up now.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 25/03/2018 22:13

love what’s your longest run so far?

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 26/03/2018 06:05

22.5 is my longest so far.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 26/03/2018 09:40

That’s amazing! Just fit in any runs that you can between now and Brighton and you’ll be fine. Many marathon plans don’t take you over 18 - at this stage if I were you I wouldn’t try and squeeze in any other very long runs. A 3 week taper is safer than 2.

Theonlyoneiknow · 26/03/2018 11:49

@love - you won't balls it up now. Much better to make the start line healthy and injury free!

3 weeks today until Boston - MWAHHHHHH. Anyone who sneezes or coughs near me receives a death stare!

LoudestRoar · 26/03/2018 12:54

Cannot believe we're almost at taper time! I'm not going to push for my 20 miles. My knee is still feeling weak. My dh trained for Brighton and then got injured 3 weeks before. I don't want the same thing to happen to me!

Blackspaniel1 · 28/03/2018 10:26

Hi all,

Glad it seems everyone is on track, love you won't mess things up now, just don't injure yourself trying to do too much.

I am due to do my last long run on Sunday, 22 miles. I am so ready to taper now, I've had niggles with my Achilles tendon for months now, and this marathon training, needless to say, is making it much worse. I will get through the runs, but it's not as much fun running so far now Grin.

I just keep visualising running towards the finish line.... keeps me going. Is Brighton the week before London, and when is Boston?

LoudestRoar · 29/03/2018 13:47

Eeeeeeeeee! Final instructions received!

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 29/03/2018 14:42

blackspaniel Brighton is on the 15th. Two weeks Sunday. Scarily close now!

Pinkstars2501 · 29/03/2018 20:34

Hi, having had to pull out of my first half marathon, due to injury and not a lot of training, I’m looking train properly and be ready for next years couple I’d like to do. I know this thread is for London really, but could somebody point me in the direction of a really good training plan please?
All this talk of tapering leaves me a little confused..... Next time I sign up, I’d like to be properly prepared.
