Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

Spinning was entirely pointless as far as I was concerned. Until I discovered spin studios with leaderboards and awesome music. Found a competitive streak I never knew I had. It's in London so eye wateringly expensive but I figure I have two kidneys, I can always sell one Grin

Well done on 75 miles! I've done quite a few of my runs on treadmills and I keep forgetting to wear my Garmin (it does treadmill running) or manually update Strava. I'm definitely going to log all of Monday. Sorry it was a rubbish run. I had one of those today. There's a really steep hill near me that I hate. But I know it's good for me. It defeated me today (it always defeats me tbh but it defeated me quicker this time) and I really wasn't feeling the running love today. Ach well. Tomorrow is another day. Started listening to "My Dad Wrote a Porno" Its hilarious!

Is that the one from the group? I need to download it!

PickleSarnie · 01/02/2018 21:06

That's the one Loudest Its really funny. I was snorting during my run today.

Hi again, I won't be able to get my number until the day before. We are travelling down Fri afternoon, DH and youngest DD are supporting so want to have a reasonably calm day beforehand, but let DD do a bit of sight seeing if possible (she's never been to London!).

What is this facebook page please? sounds as if I may like it!

I did spinning for a while, but never really got in to it. I tried other classes too, but always seem to revert to just running, which I know isn't as good as a combination.

Just planning my 14 mile route for early tomorrow, but light snow forecast, so will be a chilly one. We don't really have many flat bits where I live, so it's hard to plan a route that won't really take it out of us when going longer distances. Think I've found the one though, but it does mean all our long runs will be the same route, just adding a little on each time. Do you vary your long run routes?

LoudestRoar · 02/02/2018 07:26

It's called London Marathon Training 2018. I'm also a member of Run Mummy Run too. If you're running for a charity, they may also have a page too.
're long runs, it takes me so long to work out a route, that the only difference I sometimes make is running it the other way Grin

Blackspaniel1 · 02/02/2018 07:38

Thanks Loudest, I'll look into those.

We are running for the Stroke Association, but using our ballot place so no hefty fund raising targets thank goodness.

On the jacket question, I treated myself to a new OMM Kamleika jacket at Christmas. It wasn't cheap, but it is fantastic! Completely water and wind proof, really lightweight, fits really well (over my wide hips!), is made of non rustly, sort of microfiber fabric and has a nice lower back bit which covers my bum. It does have an inbuilt hood though, which some might not like, but it has been a godsend these past weeks running in rain and wind. A definite good buy for me.

PickleSarnie · 02/02/2018 08:35

Oooooh. That OMN kamleika jacket is the one I've had my eye on blackspaniel but wasn't sure if I could justify it. Might go treat myself.....

Euuurgh. It's wet. Cold. I didn't sleep last night and I have 12 miles to run. Am procrastinating because I really don't eating to go.

OP posts:
PickleSarnie · 03/02/2018 08:05

^want to go, not 'eating to go' I would rather be eating though

LoudestRoar · 03/02/2018 08:16

Go, and you can afterwards! I always imagine the smug 'I did it' feeling afterwards. Just remember, we only have about 8 more long runs before we taper, so not long to go!!

PickleSarnie · 03/02/2018 14:30

I was having a nice run in the end. Thought I'd try out my new jellies. Bad move. Thought I was going to have to poo in a hedgerow. Called husband in a panic and he chucked kids in the car. All of them in pyjamas to come and pick me up. Finished my 12 mile run after 10 miles. Gutted. At least I discovered they don't agree with me sooner rather than later I suppose.

Hope everyone else has had a good run!

PickleSarnie oh no! Better to find out now though than race day!
I'm trying these out tomorrow. It's a new brand, I messaged one of the guys about a price list, and he sent me these to try.

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 03/02/2018 18:18

Is it wrong that the only thing I consume on a run is a handful of marshmallows or jelly babies at about 17 miles and about 750 ml water. I've never tried energy gels is it worth it? (Obviously would now be paranoid I'd need a poo if I take one!)

LoudestRoar · 03/02/2018 18:34

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum now is the time to experiment. I've not tried jelly babies, it's on my list to try. I know they give Lucozade gels out on the day. I'm using gels at the mo, but am very naughty about not having water with me

PickleSarnie · 03/02/2018 18:44

Don't stress Tantrum My stomach is terrible when it comes to running. I have to take Imodium before every long run. Generally I just plan runs around where public toilets are but, now the runs are getting longer, that's not an option so resorting to Imodium.

I think I might just try and stick to tailwind. I can run 13 miles with nothing but doubt I could do 26. Especially when I'm running on an empty stomach through necessity. So trying out possible fuels. I've scored one option off the list today!!!

My friend lent me a camelback so might give that a go next week. Carrying a sloshing water bottle is a pain.

OP posts:
LoudestRoar · 03/02/2018 20:26

PickleSarnie Turn it upside down, and release all the air through the tube. Much less sloshing apparently!

Blackspaniel1 · 05/02/2018 17:59

Oh no Pickle, shame about the 12 miles, but you pretty much got it all done anyway! yes now is definitely the time to try things out. I too can do a half without much other than a bit of water, but I am trying high5 gels. I bought a pack which includes recovery drinks etc, which I have never used, but I'll give them a try. I am still undecided on whether gels actually work for me or whether it is more a mental boost I get, thinking I have more energy!

I did 14 miles on Saturday, set off in the dark at 6.30am, must be mad, as it snowed the whole time too. Was ok, but I got some blisters which I don't usually. I have been struggling with running shoes for my past few pairs, so went to a running shop and treated myself to new ones. I have always worn Asics GT2000 series for like 10 years, with no blisters, even when doing a marathon, but the past few pairs seem much narrower and gave me blisters between big and second toe, on the ball of my foot, which was uncomfortable! It appears Asics changed the design and narrowed the toe box so I need a bigger size to compensate.

Been out in my new ones today for 4 miles, but they felt weird.... will keep on with them and see how I go. Just what I need now, running shoe issues Grin.

PickleSarnie · 09/02/2018 13:16

Hope everyone's well.

How are your new trainers going blackspaniel? I always used to get blisters in the same place so got some double layer socks. Wrightsocks coolmesh. They're tricky to find in the UK but I found them at runandbecome.com. Not had a blister since. There are loads of types of double layer ones. A lot of people swear by Hilly Twinskins but I find them a bit bulky.

How did the new gels work out loudest I stuck to tailwind today on my long run and all seems well (although obvs also had two Imodium beforehand)

I'm just back from longest run ever. 13.5 miles. Am knackered. I have no idea where I'm going to find the energy to run almost double that!!

Hope everyone has good long runs this weekend x

Hi! Only just found the thread. I’ve got a ballot place, might also be running Brighton the week before. Training is ok, sick of running in the freezing cold rain though!!

Tip for bladders - suck all the excess air out and then the water doesn’t slosh.

LoudestRoar · 09/02/2018 13:36

Welcome sandunes! have you run a marathon before? 2 right after each other?! Grin
PickleSarnie it's a silly thing to say, but all I could taste was honey! It was a bit much, so I've gone back to my usual gels.
My charity vest arrived today, makes it seem a bit more real now. I may have gotten a tiny bit emosh, God knows what I'll be like on the day.
I'm running my first ever half on Sunday. Dh is doing it with me, we're doing the Worthing Half. It's stupid how nervous I feel!

SandunesAndRainclouds · 09/02/2018 18:54

Yes, I’ve run two marathons before so know the world of pain I’m letting myself in for. Can’t decide if I want to go for the double or not... I’ve got time in my training plan to do consecutive weekends of 20 milers which will give me a better idea if it’s achievable or not. I want to enjoy London as much as possible, and wouldn’t do Brighton for the sake of doing it if it risks London. If that makes sense!!

I’m doing Worthing half too Smile

LoudestRoar · 09/02/2018 18:58

Are you Sandunes?! I'll keep an eye out! I'll be in the black and pink unicorn leggings Grin

SandunesAndRainclouds · 09/02/2018 19:01

You’re organised! I’ll be in a club vest and that’s as much as I know! Are you from the area?

LoudestRoar · 09/02/2018 19:08

My in laws live in Littlehampton, but I live in Basildon. Are you from there?

SandunesAndRainclouds · 09/02/2018 19:10

Yeah, I’m local. I’ll look out for the leggings! I’ve never knowingly seen / met another MNetter!
