Hi,

As the ballot results come out, thought I'd start a thread to discuss training plans and share the pain of getting up at stupid o'clock on a winter morning to get long runs done.

I was supposed to run in 2017 but my knee went kaput. Physio reckons it was just runners knee and said I needed to strengthen quads, glutes and core muscles (that are shot to pieces following two large babies) So I deferred my place until 2018.

I'm doing 30 Day Ab Challenge each night (made more challenging by husband "hilariously" making childish trump noises every time I sit up Hmm ) and mixing running up with Spinning and strength training at the gym .

Put loads of weight on while knee was knackered. Which is going to be the opposite of helpful for it so am on a diet to try and lose at least 2 stones (almost half way there now though)

Anyone found a decent 6 month training plan?

Xx

So happy, first run in a week. I only went and got a 10k PB!!

ThursdayLastWeek · 17/01/2018 14:27

Hurrah Loudest! So nice to get a boost!

I just ran 15.5 trialling some of my New fuels and it went ok

PickleSarnie · 17/01/2018 21:57

Well done on all the running. And bloody well done loudest for the PB

I'm just back from the most awesome Spin class. It was totes amazeballs (as the kidz would say) Still buzzing from it. Came 11th out of 50 something. I beat my boss too (which might mean I can kiss goodbye to a raise this year) Reckon I could do the marathon, on a spin bike in a darkened studio?!

Wow go @pickle! Well done @loudestroar and @thursdaylastweek! Welcome @hatty - gels definitely give me a boost, your tummy should be okay, they say 3 an hour but I never have that many, perhaps one every 30 mins.

I have 24km on my plan for tomorrow but I have been hit by the lurgy. Am so annoyed. Was only just getting back into it after 5 months off with injury and although I don't feel utterly dreadful right now I don't think doing that would be wise!

Have been reading up about the course - looks like Boston is very hilly and I need to be especially practicing on downhills!

LoudestRoar · 20/01/2018 10:54

I'm due to do 11 miles tomorrow. But there is weather forcast. Actual weather! Rain, wind and cold. Am I a bit crazy to be looking forward to it slightly? Am sure the novelty will wear off....

PickleSarnie · 20/01/2018 12:13

Hope you're feeling better theonlyone. So frustrating being ill. Sending a gazillion get well vibes and virtual cake.

I just 10 miles in the rain loudest It's actually quite refreshing. Although was drenched through to the skin. I don't have a waterproof to run in because figure I'll be home and showered soon. But as the runs get longer, that's longer running whilst soaking. Any recommendations for lightweight running waterproof anyone?

I was tidying up and found a running belt I bought but never got on with. It's like the flipbelt. Some people love them but I don't like things round my waist. Does anyone want it before I chuck it?

It's this one in bright pink and size medium:

11 miles all done by 9:30am. And I missed the rain and snow, it was just starting as I got home. My groin was hurting a bit, but it seems to be ok now. 2.30 hours

hatty44 · 21/01/2018 16:25

picklesarnie does it make you sweat at your waist? I have been looking at the flip belts but not too sure....

PickleSarnie · 21/01/2018 17:24

Not really hatty - I just feel my waist is higher than I think it is so don't like things round it. Which is prob just me being weird Happy to post it to you and you can see if you like It then chuck/give away if you don't

Well done on the run loudest The weather was hideous today.

Whoop!! 5k PB yesterday of 35.50, but paid for it today on my 6.5 mile. 1.24.49, still a good time for me though.
My Asics plan has suggested adjusting my runs. It now has me finishing in 5 hours 39, no way will that happen Grin

LoveAGoodToddlerTantrum · 25/01/2018 20:51

Well done Loudest

LoudestRoar · 27/01/2018 08:08

How far is everyone doing this weekend? I have such a busy weekend, so am aiming to be out the door by 6:30am tomorrow morning to get my 11 miles done. My son has baby swim classes in a hydrotherapy pool at 10:30, so aiming to be the one in the pool with him. It's like getting into a bath!
In other news, I've been quoted in a national running magazine! I'd anyone wants to see it, I can pm it over, as I don't want to out myself on the thread Grin

PickleSarnie · 27/01/2018 14:11

11 slow miles done today. Was soooo windy today. Was like running through treacle.

Oooh. loudest How cool! Is it Runners world? I have subscription to that.

Hello everyone, very exciting Loudest are you basically famous now?? Grin

I did my longest ever run this week (16.5m approx) and got a smashing new PB at parkrun this morning. My regular parkrun isn’t what you’d class a PB course (ie it’s the hilliest in the whole country) so I went somewhere different today and had a great run in a much faster course.

Have joined a FG group for VMLM runners and it’s filled with such varying experiences and strategies that it’s given me a real boost.

I ran with tailwind in my camelbak and a couple of gels in my pocket this week and felt great after, so will try that combo again this week.

LoudestRoar · 27/01/2018 16:41

Woman's Running magazine. Sod it, I'll just post it.
Pickle if it's the same FB one that I'm in, you'll see me there! I post a bit in there Smile

PickleSarnie · 27/01/2018 17:26

Oooh. A photo and everything?! Can we get your autograph?! What's "jeffing " btw?

I took tailwind out today too. Really like it. It's the only thing that doesn't make my stomach complain. That's what I'm dreading most about the run lengths increasing - having to use gels.

Well done Thursday on 16.5miles! How do you feel now?

OP posts:
LoudestRoar · 27/01/2018 18:08

It's Jeff Galloways walk run technique. I'm currently doing my distances by running for 30 secs then walking for 30 secs. No way could I run continuously!

ThursdayLastWeek · 27/01/2018 18:11

Thank you Pickle. I have a slightly weak knee that Is starting to feel a bit tender after runs now but other than the usual DOMS for 24hours I feel really good. My fast parkrun time this morning was a total confidence boost.

Running in the wind is my least favourite, especially into it. It’s when I can’t hear anything because the wind is rushing around my ears that my spirit is always at its weakest so well done for getting out there this morning!

I think it is the same group Loudest Smile

ThursdayLastWeek · 27/01/2018 18:12

In fact it’s that group that taught me about Jeffing, just last night!

Blackspaniel1 · 28/01/2018 05:53

Hi all Smile I introduced myself to this thread way back in October but haven't been on it much since. Is it ok if I rejoin please?

My daughter and I are running together (both got ballot places) her first marathon, my second. We are following a Hal Higdon novice2 plan, which I have tweaked slightly around life, but so far so good. We did 12 miles last weekend, and are stepping back to 9 today. 14 next week! that is going to be a challenge, as it passes my half marathon mental 'that's ok' distance.

You all sound to be getting on very well, and even becoming famous in magazines too Wink.

We have an offroad hilly half marathon at the end of Feb, but other than that just plodding on following our plan.

I have booked accommodation and now train tickets, so feeling excited about going already, have you all sorted logistics yet?

And finally, on a more depressing note, my Christmas excess weight has not magically fallen off in January as I was desperately hoping it might, in fact, it seems to be going on still..... soooo today is the start of my healthy eating to fuel running, kick out the junk and lose a few pounds diet. I know it will really help my running to shift a bit of weight too, so I have to remain focused.

LoudestRoar · 28/01/2018 06:25

Hello again Blackspaniel1
I'm just about to go out for 11 miles. I was out last night, but didn't drink and left early so I could do my run this morning. I'm very sore from my fitness class so will see how we get on.
Re logistics, one my friends is running for a local charity and they have a mini bus going down to the start. Luckily, she's got me and dh seats on it. Takes the stress out of commuting! Will be getting the train home afterwards

PickleSarnie · 29/01/2018 10:07

Hi again blackspaniel I still haven't got around to booking accommodation. I need to book somewhere that allows me to cancel if my knee goes kaput between now and then and I can't run it. I work in London so don't really fancy a night away in London on a really busy day surrounded by runners If I'm not actually getting to run!! Fingers crossed it won't come to that though.

How is everyone planning on picking up their numbers from the expo? Must be a bit of a pain for people miles from London? I can just nip out there on my lunch break. And take the DLR, sit at the front and pretend I'm driving a train! (

OP posts:
LoudestRoar · 29/01/2018 11:54

PickleSarnie I'm going to head to the expo on the first day, while my eldest is at school. Just deciding if I leave my 1 and a half year old with someone while I go up. It'll take me about 45 mins to get there from here.

PickleSarnie · 31/01/2018 20:29

Happy Hump day!! How's everyone's week going? I'm on my way home from best spinning class ever. It's so awesome. I'd do it everyday if I could. And hopefully it's helping getting me fitter and stronger without putting strain on my knee.

I joined what I'm guessing is the same facebook group you were talking about loudest and thursday Bloody hell, its addictive. And really motivating. Although my motivation to actually doing any work during the day has decreased because of it!

OP posts:
LoudestRoar · 01/02/2018 20:38

I've not tried spinning, I've never really understood what it is Grin
I had a complete Child free day today. I wasn't going to run at all until the weekend. I had a rough run on Tuesday, where I had to run to finish a 75 mile January challenge. It was horrible, I got a stitch I just couldn't get rid of, so my plan was to skip my 3 mile run this week. But, the sun was shining, so I went today anyway, nd quite enjoyed it.
