Anyone up for a bit of half m support?

I'm registered to run my first half m in early September.

I'm struggling a bit with motivation tbh. I think I peaked too soon - could have done it 6 weeks ago. I've got time to get prepared though - it's 8 weeks away and I'm not starting from scratch. The most important thing for me is to keep up the strength work or my knees go kerboom.

Anyone else?

I'm also interested because dd has learned to cycle with stabilisers at 7 (she has hypermobility so it took longer than most children)

minesapintofwine · 13/07/2017 12:43

I ran 6 miles this am. It wasn't perfect at all, but was slightly better than the last few runs I've had. So am feeling a little more optimistic! Before all this the furthest distance I had run was 10miles. It was only a few months ago but with loads of setbacks since I feel like I'm starting all over again. Hmmpphh.

mammymammyIRL · 13/07/2017 17:53

Well done pint of wine
I know where you're coming from with feeling like you're starting from scratch Smile

I was out late last night so didn't go this morning but will do 5/6km in morning before work at 7.15am Smile

mammymammyIRL · 14/07/2017 06:05

Heading out in 10 mins will get 5k in & hopefully longer one tomorrow then. Feels great to be back into it.

minesapintofwine · 14/07/2017 10:20

Well done mammy such early starts show true dedication!

Nice to hear you are enjoying it too, I'm getting there

mumthatruns · 14/07/2017 12:56

Looking forward to getting out of the house for a run later. DH is insisting!

mammymammyIRL · 14/07/2017 13:21

It was only 2.5miles but it's better than lying in bed Smile mum wish my dh was so supportive! He lets on to people how proud he is of me but he doesn't enable me to get my runs in at all Sad

revolution909 · 14/07/2017 15:15

Yes, that's definitely better mammy! I di 8k before yoga (I suck at it btw!) Do you guys are on Strava?

Pikachuwithyourmouthclosed · 16/07/2017 10:54

Hello everyone.

Love the suggestion upthread of going running with my kids - I have a grumpy 11 yr old who loathes running, a bouncy 9yo who loves the idea of running but then gets a stitch / has uncomfortable socks / needs a sit on a bench / wants to stop and identify a bug, and a 5yo who would make it to the end of the drive before demanding a carry. Made me giggle to think about it.

Anyway - no, running with my kids not something I'm going to consider! So I haven't run all week, but did do strength training and a couple of boot camps. Ran 16k yesterday and was absolutely fine. Enjoyed it. Could have kept going at the end, but I'd arrived back home.

I'm feeling pretty chilled. I'm really fit, and if I keep it up I'll be fine on the day.

You're right Pikachu the important thing is to remain fit. I've read you could stop running for a month and remain fit for the same distance. It's the same for distances, if you run regularly say 16k you can do it to 21k, no problem. 19k in the bag this morning , my Vo2 max increased and my race prediction are substantially better too!!

Suzelle · 16/07/2017 21:29

I have just started a plan for a half marathon in October. I've run a couple before but I just never seem to get faster or improve, I'm just getting so frustrated. Does anyone have any advice on what they have done to improve their speed?

christinarossetti · 16/07/2017 22:07

I got faster by varying my running pace in short runs. Look up fartlek or interval training. I've never done it in any particularly methodical way, but it definitely improved my 10km and half times.

Pikachuwithyourmouthclosed · 17/07/2017 00:16

Bugger.

I got a bit competitive with my 9yo and wrenched my neck doing a stupid standing up without using your hands exercise. Owwwww. I'm walking like C3PO. Gahhhhhhhhhh am a stupid idiot.

Haven't been running since & set alarm to go this morning but realised dh never packed dds bag for camp today so that took priority instead Sad

mumthatruns · 17/07/2017 06:55

Not managed to get out for a run for around 11-12 days, due to circumstances and a pulled muscle in my knee.
Set my alarm for 5am today and went out to do a mile. Nice and easy to see if my knee would hold and it did!

So fingers crossed I can get back to the plan using the my ASICS app and do the 3 miles it wants me to do tomorrow!

Youcantscaremeihavechildren · 17/07/2017 07:32

Hi all, can I tentatively join? Stupidly, in an effort to get over someone I decided to book myself in for a hm on thev15th October...i can currently run 5k on the flat but recently moved to the side of a hill and now do more walk/run.
I'm struggling to get out enough but determined to give it a go. The cut off time is 6hrs for the full, it's a double loop for that so I reckon I can just run/walk a bit if I have to, I've walked a hm in less than 3.5hrs so it'll be fine...
My stubborn streak won t let me change to not doing it!
I've got 13 weeks, a toddler, a 7 year old who will run for a mile or so before getting tired, no running buggy and dh is out all day...i still think I might fit one in before he goes to work one morning, one or two when he's back and then a long run on a Sunday. There's a park run junior locally I can do with dd and a running club 5k and 10k, although my toddler is a pain at bedtime so I struggle to make this.
I also have a shocking pelvic floor so I need to sort this.
Im mad to be considering this aren't I?

christinarossetti · 17/07/2017 11:36

Not at all mad. Lots of people walk, run, walk, run. Much better than running out of steam at 8 miles and really hating the last 5.

I'm just back from am 11 mile run. Felt comfortable.

Youcantscaremeihavechildren · 17/07/2017 17:20

Get over something not someone! Oops auto correct! Even that doesn't make sense...gettong over a difficult bit and though I'd book myself in to give my self something to aim for..
I'm glad you don't think it's mad christina.
Walked a hilly 4 miles with the buggy for the school run, it's bloody hot! Will go for a run later when dh home, hopefully it'll cool down by then. I found a training schedule for 12 weeks couch to half, hopefully I can manage that.

mammymammyIRL · 18/07/2017 06:34

Well nearly home & went the route I started running on about 7 years ago & discovered I really need a circle route which I knew but said I'd go because it's all flat. Ended up only running 2km over & walking 2k back my confidence in myself running is shattered Sad

Youcantscaremeihavechildren · 18/07/2017 07:24

mammy there's nothing wrong with that! At least you got out and your time is good!
I started recently doing a little 2mile route near my house, I have never been able to run all the way, too hilly! Last night though it sort of clicked, I still walked a bit but ran pretty much all the way at a snail's pace of 13min/mile and did 3.4miles in the end, I couldn't do that last week. Just brush yourself off and keep going.
I ache like a bastard this morning though...ouch...

shortaris1 · 18/07/2017 07:54

I ran a bit more last week and managed a sweaty 5k with a group but missed another long run due to socializing at the weekend. Got 11 weeks to go now.

Bloody hot here too Youcantscareme

Sirzy · 18/07/2017 08:06

I did a hilly 13k on Sunday including some of the route for my September half and was feeling really good.

Now I have a chesty cough so having a few days forced rest

revolution909 · 18/07/2017 08:42

Great runs everyone!! I'm off to do my "speed" session!

minesapintofwine · 18/07/2017 11:13

Hi youcant I am in awe of you doing couch to hm that's amazing you WILL do it, and what an achievement!

Everyone is doing well we're getting in the swing of it now.

shortaris which hm are you doing? I'm doing the Cardiff one which is in 11 weeks too.

I've had two really good runs this week. Just need to get a long one in on Thurs day. Like mammy I anticipate a knock to my confidence constantly but we know on the day we can pull it out of the bag! There's no rhyme or reason but some days I just can't run/be bothered/breathe/move. Like my feet just get stuck to the ground! That happened to me in a 10k race last year and it was horrible! BUT, that's running imo -the highs with the lows.

Youcantscaremeihavechildren · 18/07/2017 19:37

mine thanks, it's a bit more idiotic than brave though..
Did another 3 miles tonight, it was really hard. I'd not eaten a great deal though and it's still really muggy. Took me 40 mins again.. :( tomorrow according to the asics app I've got to do 4.5..bloody hell! Bath and epsom salts tonight I think.
