Half Marathon thread

Anyone up for a bit of half m support?

I'm registered to run my first half m in early September.

I'm struggling a bit with motivation tbh. I think I peaked too soon - could have done it 6 weeks ago. I've got time to get prepared though - it's 8 weeks away and I'm not starting from scratch. The most important thing for me is to keep up the strength work or my knees go kerboom.

Anyone else?

Thanks all!!
Who's next? Anyone this coming weekend? RMC when is yours? I'm losing track.

I found on the day that the excitement got me through. Honestly, I wasn't as fit as I could have been, and it would have been sensible to do a lot of knee strengthening exercises, but on the day it was fine. I really enjoyed it.

I spent a lot of time trainer-watching on the run.

Rank - to blip is human. Back on the horse and you'll be fine. You can't possibly undo all your training in one weekend.

Moggle the crowd will take you for the last bits don't worry.

I am doing GNR and my longest training run was 10 miles, did 9.2 yesterday as a last long run. I never do more than 10 in training.

HRHPrincessMegan · 04/09/2017 11:32

Thanks Bubble.

Hoolit · 04/09/2017 16:43

I agree the crowd will carry you mog sounds like you are well prepared.
RMC 11 miles is the furthest I've run this time and it was a week ago hope I'm ok.
I plan a slow short run tomorrow that's probably it, actually I'm pretty scared it's not enough but I don't want to over do it now. I'm sure ill be fine on the day
I'm really looking forward to it but think I just want it out the way now I'm sick of thinking about it and fitting in training, I just want a good drink and not worry about the effects GrinBlush

RMC123 · 04/09/2017 19:35

Pika my half is on Sunday. Great North Run like Hoolit and Moggle. Planned to get out tonight but first day back at school and I am knackered!! Tomorrow maybe!

mogglemoo · 04/09/2017 19:45

So me, Hoolit, RMC and Sirzy all doing GNR on Sunday.

RMC123 · 04/09/2017 19:47

Sorry Sirzy! Completely missed that! Good luck

Rankellior · 04/09/2017 20:39

Good luck moggle, Hoolit, RMC and Sirzy will hopefully be watching some of it in between family plans.

I made myself go out today and ran 4 miles to atone for a wasted weekend. Got running club tomorrow and then another 2 x 10k this week. Distance picks up again next week and have to hit 10.5 miles. Hopefully lots of fab stories from GNR to keep me motivated!

mammymammyIRL · 06/09/2017 20:58

Where's everyone? Out running ? Grin

I got a PB tonight 32.09 for 5k!!! First mile uphill too. I need to do a parkrun to test these legs Grin

HRHPrincessMegan · 06/09/2017 21:00

I'm guessing there's a lot of zen like preparation ahead of GNR - the thread has gone very quiet. How are you all feeling?

I'm having an okay week with 5 miles completed yesterday and 6 today. I've another 3.5 weeks to go but I'm not finding it any easier. My muscles are sooo tight I'm going to book in for a massage. My calves get really achy about 4 miles in.

How's everyone else going?

mammymammyIRL · 06/09/2017 21:30

3.9 miles mon & 3.7 tonight

Hrh that's two longish runs together. I only ever do one long one a week.

Hoolit · 06/09/2017 22:22

Hi, thanks Ran eek it's nearly here!!!

I haven't done a lot this past week, I tried a couple like 2 miles last night but my toe hurts from my hike at the weekend so going to swim instead tomorrow and rest it and hopefully be ok for Sunday.

Have you tried a roller hrh? Not long for you either. Yes I'm thinking positive thoughts Grin

When is your run mammy and how's the new shoes ?

mammymammyIRL · 06/09/2017 22:25

My half is sun 17th!!!

HRHPrincessMegan · 07/09/2017 06:46

My running starting point was very low mammy and I've only given myself 9 weeks to train so I have been concerned about having an appropriate level of fitness. I'm following a program found online as the result of a google search! I'm tapering my week day runs from next week.

I've been quite disciplined about using the roller hoolit but not on calves. I'll see if I can find a YouTube program for that. You must be excited about Sunday - a swim sounds like a great idea.

mogglemoo · 07/09/2017 09:50

Zen: that's a good word, but doesn't describe me!

Have just finished my last run before the big day- 5k with a short steep hill of 11%. I hope there isn't a hill as steep as that!

It feels strange and I'm quite emotional, 7 months of on and off training, worries and elation when things were going well. This is probably going to be my one and only GNR and I plan to enjoy every second. (I'm thinking of it like childbirth: agony to go through, but it only lasts a finite amount of time (in my case around 3 hours) and the end result is all worth it.

I have said I'll run the Great Scottish Half next year with a friend who wants to start training again...

See you on the other side.

💐

Good luck to the four doing GNR, can't wait to hear how you all get on.
I am having a blister issue at the moment AngryI popped it once but it came straight back the next time and ran and gets bigger each time. I think I am going to try and pop it again after the gym tomorrow morning, then no running until Monday morning by which time hopefully it's stopped causing me discomfort. Stupid how such a tiny thing can be such a big deal.
It's 4 weeks Sunday until the big day for me (Oxford half) and I am planning to do my next and last long run of 12 miles 2 weeks before, does that sound ok? And then just 10ks for the last two weeks.
So nervous already!

RMC123 · 07/09/2017 20:02

Last run done . Speedy 5k because it was raining! Can't quite believe it's here! Arghh!!!

shortaris1 · 07/09/2017 20:38

Hi all,

Back from hols and foot better but not right so pulled out of half sadly. Gutted but even if I can run on it by this weekend I haven't time to up the miles sensibly so its the right decision. Hope you don't mind me cheering you all on!

Very excited for those doing the GNR. Hoping to watch some of it too but out with friends for boozy lunch on Sat so we'll see.

Been lifting weights, doing yoga and using the bike as well as doing my rehab exercises so hopefully my fitness won't have dropped too much.

I miss running. What's happened to me?

mammymammyIRL · 07/09/2017 21:39

Hrh you're disciplined with your running too it sounds like.

My next plan -after half marathon - is to follow surges on runkeeper to improve my 5k time

Best of luck to all doing GNR

minesapintofwine · 08/09/2017 07:59

mammy Well done on your pb! I have exactly the same plan as my next race is a 5k on NYE.

Good luck to all those running the GNR you're going to smash it!

short I'm so sorry about your foot and having to pull out. My advice, sign up for another asap and stay on this thread! I pulled out of the Swansea half in June and whist I still wish I hadn't had to concentrating on this one has made me get over it.

I'm planning on a long run today about 11 miles, but I've barely been over the last few weeks so don't know if I'll manage it. I wish this half was over fed up of feeling nervous lol. With the kids back in school I'm going to kick myself routine back into touch next week Smile

2012 have you tried blister plasters? They work fab for me.

There was something else I was going to say but can't remember what it was...

mammymammyIRL · 08/09/2017 09:54

mine I also hope that my sister will register for a series in new year 5k in jan, 5 mile in feb, 10k in march and 10miles in april.

rightsofwomen · 08/09/2017 10:13

Hola!

I'm a keen runner. Doing Ipswich HM on the 24th Sept.
Last LSR of 14 miles this evening (can't get out over the w/e - single parent).
7 mile race next weekend.

I did the GNR in 2007 or so. It was my first ever really, really huge race and I loved it. Good luck everyone.

rightsofwomen · 08/09/2017 10:18

2012860363
12 miles 2 weeks before race day sounds perfect. It's about getting the mileage not the pace at this stage so take it easy.

minesapintofwine · 08/09/2017 12:09

I managed just over 11 miles. It was hard and slow and I dId walk a couple of sections. But I'm happy!

My race is not for 3 weeks but I feel like I'm ready to taper a bit. Say 9 miles next week for the longest run. 6 miles the week after then short runs the week leading up. My left quad and knee is a bit sore and don't really want to overdo it. Plus I feel like my next longest run will be a half and I want to save it for the day. I'm confident that I can. But I'm adjusting my predicted finish time to 2.45. 🐢

Does that sound ok oh wise friends? Or should I really be doing my longest run next week?

minesapintofwine · 08/09/2017 12:10

Hi rights it's nice to hear from a well seasoned runner. You inspire me to keep going!
