Anyone up for a bit of half m support?

I'm registered to run my first half m in early September.

I'm struggling a bit with motivation tbh. I think I peaked too soon - could have done it 6 weeks ago. I've got time to get prepared though - it's 8 weeks away and I'm not starting from scratch. The most important thing for me is to keep up the strength work or my knees go kerboom.

Anyone else?

I think if you're confident you'll be fine doing the distance AND you have niggles the you'd be much better sticking to 9 rather than pushing for extra. A solid 9 will give you much more confidence than a wobbly 12 or 13.

At this stage, allowing your body to recover from the hard 11 will be more beneficial than keep pushing it. Is it your first 1/2?

rightsofwomen · 08/09/2017 12:18

Thank you pint

HM is my favourite distance.

minesapintofwine · 08/09/2017 12:29

That's funny right so far half is my least favourite 😂.

Yes it is my first half. I registered for the Swan search half in June but pulled out due to injury. I'm now running the Cardiff half (25000 runners, the busiest race I've ever been in) on 1st Oct. I feel like I've been training for a half for ever and know just want to finally get one under my belt.

Swansea

mammymammyIRL · 08/09/2017 19:53

Rights another question I covered half marathon distance on 27th August my half is on 17th Sept, I've run 4 times since averaging 3.5 miles each time. I'm thinking of doing 6miles on Sunday if my headcold buggers off, also doing a charity colour run with kiddos that's 5km.
What should be my plan for week ahead?

rightsofwomen · 08/09/2017 22:29

mammy hello!
It sounds like you've trained really well. How did the half distance feel?

So, I would make shifting your cold your priority, by really looking after yourself. Sleeping well, resting, eating and drinking wisely. You've done the training, this last week is about staying well and getting prepared.
You'll want to get out and run a bit so you don't go nuts, but it should be little effort - really just ticking over. Use these easy runs to focus on your form (arms, relaxing, your breathing) and to imagine the race.
Tapering messes with your head!

rightsofwomen · 08/09/2017 22:31

You'll love it mines!
Sounds like it'll be a relief to finally tick it off your list of life goals!!

wineusuallyhelps · 08/09/2017 23:42

I'm not up with all the posts but good luck to those doing GNR.

Sounds as if I have a similar approach to mammy. My HM is on 17 Sept and I did 12 miles on the Sunday just gone. This Sunday I will do 6 miles.

During this week I have done 3 miles and 4 miles in separate sessions (the 4 miles with faster intervals). Was supposed to do cross-training or similar today, but I didn't have time!

I am looking forward to and dreading 17 Sept in equal measure!!!

mammymammyIRL · 09/09/2017 07:38

Wine mines at 10am on sept 17 which is perfect for me as I love to run in the morning, unfortunately I'm going to the races day before so won't get as much sleep as I'd like Shock

We've a very similar plan so.
Rights it felt really good, it was mainly flat & my half is known as flattest half in Ireland so this seems good. It was my first time using tailwind too & that went well. My mindset was good for it too. Previous two halfs are mainly uphill & didn't go well for me so this is third time lucky for me Smile
Thanks for advice, I will stick to easy runs so.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE RUNNING TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!

You've come so far (literally and metaphorically). I hope you enjoy your run. You've earned it XXX

Hi all I need help please!! I have stupidly said I will do a half in February. This is from someone who only started running in March and so far have only managed 5.5 miles at the end of June and haven't run since ShockShock so I was thinking of an App to help me with a training plan - does anyone have any ideas which is the best one?

BubbleAnimal · 09/09/2017 09:32

Good luck everyone!!

mammymammyIRL · 09/09/2017 09:41

Loubilou welcome loads of time! A friend uses my asics app you put in date of event & it gives you programme to suit. I'm sure others do too. I'm going to use surges on my runkeeper app next to improve my 5k time.

Good luck everyone SmileSmile

RMC123 · 09/09/2017 10:14

Thanks pika just about to leave and pick my running buddy up to drive across to Newcastle! This is all getting very real.
Haven't had time to catch up on the thread properly- starting a new job this week was probably very very bad timing!
But quickly welcome Lou and rights and anyone else I have missed.
Could have done with your words of wisdom Rights in the last few weeks! Grin
Sorry to hear you had to pull out short. Sending healing wishes!
See you on the other side!

Hoolit · 09/09/2017 10:33

Ah sorry short hope you're on the mend soon.

Welcome to all the new posters Smile

Nerves are setting in now but excited too.
Welcome to Newcastle RMC it'll get real when you see the tyne bridge with the gnr logo on it, I saw it going up and it gave me goosebumps then!

Good luck to all my fellow runners tomorrow.

HRHPrincessMegan · 09/09/2017 11:49

Best of luck to all the GNR runners tomorrow. I hope you all have a fantastic HM and I'm really looking forward to hearing about your individual experiences.

Short wishing you a speedy recovery. You'll be well positioned for your next race.

Rankellior · 09/09/2017 12:07

Hope all you GNR runners are all in fine form and getting excited. I'm some weeks behind so haven't even got above 10 miles yet. Did 6 yesterday and now my knees in agony, have been bad since joining a running club and doing speed work - I need to be more diligent with stretching for sure.
Look forward to all the race reports tomorrow afternoon, hopefully will catch some of it on tv!

Sirzy · 09/09/2017 13:20

In Newcastle now... nerves well and truly kicked in!

minesapintofwine · 09/09/2017 14:36

Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

Purplerunner · 09/09/2017 14:48

Good luck everyone! All this GNR chat has put me in the notion for entering for next year. It is a ballot isn't it? My sister lives in Newcastle too, so it is very appealing.

3 weeks tomorrow until the GSR which will be my 6th Half. Getting nervous already, trying to balance doing enough training with not setting off the injury I had over the summer. Always a balancing act for me 😀

Blackandpurple · 09/09/2017 15:52

Im running Cardiff too. 6th time and love it!

minesapintofwine · 09/09/2017 16:40

Blackandpurple · 09/09/2017 16:56

Ive trained hard for this one. Got to beat my HM PB!

Blackandpurple · 09/09/2017 16:56

Oh good luck to those at the GNR. Its certainly on my to do list!

minesapintofwine · 09/09/2017 17:48

black I'll manage a couple of Wine but can't manage a night out these days 😂

Good luck for the pb-what are you hoping for?
