Dusting off the trainers

A support thread for anyone trying to get back into running or starting for the first time. Would love to have a bit of company.

I used to run quite a bit, though nothing impressive (managed a 1/2 marathon at my peak). Then I did far too much too soon after having my 3rd baby, and buggered my knees. Have not run for about 3 years.

Am just getting back to it now. Gently does it. Am terrified of hurting myself again. Have been seeing a PT with the goal of getting strong enough in all the right places to run regularly again.

Went for my first run on Friday. Aiming for 10 mins (PT instruction) but really enjoyed it and ran for 20. Didn't get very far though!!

2nd run was yesterday. 15 minutes, pitiful distance, lots of hills.

Looking forward to running again on Tues.

I did less than a kilometer in 15 minutes according to my run keeper. Dh says i must have set it up wrong because it would have been quicker to walk but i think i really am that slow.

I'm going to go for a run tomorrow morning.

There, I've put it in writing - gotta happen now!

SharingMichelle · 26/04/2016 11:46

Did you go Cointreau?

I'm going this evening.

I went at lunch time. Week 4 run 1, so 2 x 3 minute runs and 2 x 5 minute runs. I did it and had a bit left in the tank, but it wasn't easy!

SharingMichelle · 26/04/2016 19:31

I went!!

Managed 4k in just under half an hour.

Really didn't feel like going but it wasn't too bad once I got out there. Had to walk up the last bit of the evil never-ending hill by the school.

i wanted to go today but didn't make it. shins and sides of legs really hurt. :(

CointreauVersial · 26/04/2016 22:33

I did indeed go!

It took me a good twenty minutes last night to unearth my trainers, headphones, kit etc. and install the app on my phone. But I was up and out at 6.30am and did Week 3 Run 1. It was lovely and sunny, but bloody cold! Needed gloves and a jacket. But the run was no problem at all; actually pretty easy.

Let's hope this is the first of many. Well done Daughter, Fraggled and Sharing for getting out there too!

Sorry to hear that Woody. Sounds painful.

My right knee is sore this morning.

Hi all! I did c25k in october last year having literally never run. I couldn't manage 1 minute to start with and I weighed over 17 stone Blush After the first session (I did it in a group) I went back to my car and sobbed for about 10 minutes, swearing that I was never going to embarrass myself like that again. for some reason though, I went back the next week and completed the course.

I've now shifted about a stone and I'm doing a 10k race in 3 weeks time Grin I've only done 7 km so far, but I am going to make it through the race. My target is to do it in less than 90 mins (I am slow) but I don't even really care if I don't manage that.

I actually enjoy running now which I never ever ever thought I would say. I get upset when I can't go. It will take me a while, but I will lose another 2 stone.

I'm more confident in myself and I can say hand on heart that running has been the major factor in that increase in self-belief. It's changed me so much that I look back on that first c25k run as a real new beginning.

Fraggled · 27/04/2016 18:06

Wow knowler, good going!

My knees hurt.

I'm following PT advice, but I have to admit to being disappointed that the old pain has come back at under 5k.

Fantastic, knowler! I'm slow too, but I get there....

I am grappling with an unfamiliar sensation after yesterday's run. Aching legs! This never used to happen; it shows how out of shape I am after six months off.

I'm going to go again tomorrow.

CointreauVersial · 28/04/2016 17:55

Grrr....didn't get out this morning - I had a really bad night's sleep and turned the alarm off.

Tomorrow!!

TwoLittleBlooms · 28/04/2016 18:20

Hi, I am just about to start running (tried NHS C25K before but got a chest infection in week two and then pregnant and just never went back to it).

Now four stone over weight and I am about to try again (and this time succeed!). I have downloaded the app again in preparation although I like the sound of one of the apps mentioned above where I can use my own music. Now just need to find my trainers Hmm

I've been out again. Only 3k in 20 mins. My excuse is that it's 39 degrees here today.

OP posts:
CointreauVersial · 29/04/2016 16:29

39 degrees?? Where are you, OP?

I did manage a run this morning - went out with DH, but he sprinted off ahead, of course, leaving me for dust.

Fraggled · 29/04/2016 19:14

I went out too. Week 4 run 2. Was pretty easy although my mind was racing and making it harder than it needed to be!! It's so hilly where I live too, which doesn't help me!
