A support thread for anyone trying to get back into running or starting for the first time. Would love to have a bit of company.

I used to run quite a bit, though nothing impressive (managed a 1/2 marathon at my peak). Then I did far too much too soon after having my 3rd baby, and buggered my knees. Have not run for about 3 years.

Am just getting back to it now. Gently does it. Am terrified of hurting myself again. Have been seeing a PT with the goal of getting strong enough in all the right places to run regularly again.

Went for my first run on Friday. Aiming for 10 mins (PT instruction) but really enjoyed it and ran for 20. Didn't get very far though!!

2nd run was yesterday. 15 minutes, pitiful distance, lots of hills.

Looking forward to running again on Tues.

The best thing is my slow jog yesterday seems to have really eased my aching leg muscles. I was expecting to be worse this morning but I feel so much better. And strong! Definitely caught the running bug, I just want to get out there again.

I'd love to get up early and go but sadly my little girl can wake up as early as 4am (like this morning) so no chance of me getting up at 3. I'm not that mental.

I am the same Cointreau, summer rain very different to winter!!

Who's out today then?

SharingMichelle · 11/05/2016 08:49

My run last night eased my muscles too Frag. Amazing.
I'm not running today as I've done an hour of strength training and I'm playing tennis later. Will run tomorrow.

Well, I should be careful what I wish for - it was absolutely tipping down this morning for my run! Squelch, squelch, squelch!

It went really well, though - I didn't feel tired at any point.

I like going first thing - then it's done and dusted, and I definitely feel energised for the rest of the day. Six years ago when I started running we had DCs who were too young to leave alone, so it worked well if I did my running before DH left for work, but I've continued even though they are teens now.

Fraggled · 11/05/2016 13:55

Well done Cointreau. I love early morning runs too.

Fraggled · 12/05/2016 08:51

Just back from a quick 3k jog. Lovely morning out there!

rainbowinfusedspaceunicorn · 12/05/2016 15:36

This thread is excellent motivation - sounds like you're all doing great!
Second ever run last night Grin went well again and I'm really enjoying myself! Think I found it a bit easier than last time as well, according to the app I went quicker but I want to build up how far/long I can run for rather than worrying about speed. Looking forward to the next one now!

Did 4k in 37 degree heat this evening. Very hilly. I can do further and faster on the flat, but I think the hills are probably good for me.

Was struggling up the evil hill by the school when Olly Murs, Troublemaker came on my mp3 - "why does it feel so good but hurt so bad? I think you're giving me a heart attack!" Grin

Foam Roller: DH uses one for his IT band. He rolls back & forth with outside of his thigh on the roller. Apparently this massages something deep. His roller is quite a lot smaller than most the roller examples on Youtube.

CointreauVersial · 12/05/2016 21:22

SharingMichelle - you're a machine! 4k, 37 degrees AND hills. I'm impressed.

Maplestirrup · 12/05/2016 22:21

Out today - 2 miles, first half mile was a hill. Took me a while, but I kept going, albeit slowly. It was warm aswell. I am an ambient weather jogger!
We all seem to be doing well.

👍

Fraggled · 13/05/2016 20:50

Just back from another 5k jog around a local (hilly) village! Was a lovely cool evening. Now in a hot bubble bath :)

Anyone else go out today?

rainbowinfusedspaceunicorn · 14/05/2016 18:02

I'm off out once I've taken DS to bed Smile Going to try going a teeny bit further this evening. And pace myself!!

SharingMichelle · 14/05/2016 19:04

I went running with a friend this evening. It was nice to have company. We ran 6k in one direction, stopped for a juice, and brisk walked back. Mostly flat.

I went out this afternoon but got totally trapped by steep hills so only managed 4K. Lovely weather though and I'm sure I ran my slice of cheesecake off!!

CointreauVersial · 14/05/2016 21:00

I did Week 5 Run 1 this morning. Perfect weather - dry and bright but not too hot.

First five minute run - oh, this is easy! I could do this for hours.
Second five minute run - oof! This is hard work - is it nearly over??
Third five minute run - OMG, I'm going to DIE, make it STOP....AARGH........

But I kept going - my dusty-trainered chums would be proud of me!

For some reason, I'm now really stiff.Confused

rainbowinfusedspaceunicorn · 14/05/2016 21:27

Ahh company sounds nice. I take the dog so got my running partner sorted Grin does anyone else on this thread run with their dog?

My slightly longer route wasn't as much longer as I thought but I did 2.8km, so each run has been 100m more than the last and didn't feel at all like I might die when I got home this time so a definite improvement already!

Lambzig · 14/05/2016 21:29

Hello, can I please join you?

I have been working out a lot since mid Jan (30 DS and Body Rev which I am still ploughing through), but went for my first run in around 15 years three weeks ago. I used to run marathons and I had completely forgotten how addictive it is.

I am embarrassingly slow at the moment, but have managed about 4 runs on top of my usual workouts. This morning I ran for 60 mins and 9k, so want to focus on getting faster in that hour now.

CointreauVersial · 14/05/2016 22:52

I don't like running with company. I have to be very "zen" when I run, and comapny doesn't work for me. I'm also very slow.

I'm sure a dog would be OK, though. He wouldn't judge......

SharingMichelle · 15/05/2016 05:10

Welcome Lamb. 9k is brilliant and 60m isn't that slow.

My dog is too fat to run with me Blush. She waits patiently by the gate and when i get in from my run i take her straight out for a walk and it works as a cool down for me.

Frag i think hills make a huge difference. I can keep going and going on the flat but am dying at 4k in hills.

Fraggled · 15/05/2016 06:24

Oh glad it's not just me on the hills then! I'm taking a rest day today because I think I need one.

Welcome Lamb, 9K in 60 minutes sounds amazing to me after a 15 year break :)

Fraggled · 15/05/2016 06:25

Oh forgot to say... I am a lone runner. Headphones on, focused and total me time!! Tried running with a friend once and I hated it!

Maplestirrup · 15/05/2016 07:48

Went out yesterday, managed the 25 min run on get running, could have easily stopped after 20 mins, but carried on. BUT forgot to start the distance capture app, I was not happy when I realised as I am sure I had gone further than I had before, and def faster (I'm probably making that last one up).

Lamb-9k in 60 mins, I doubt there is any dust on your trainers!

Contreau- I am exactly the same as you, slow and prefer my own company with my headphones on. I don't think running with someone else would suit me I would always be aware if they had to slow down to accommodate my slow pace, and I doubt I could hold a conversation while running, it would finish me off! However a non judgemental dog would be perfect. My neighbour hinted that I could take her dog as it needs a lot of exercise, but I've seen it on the lead, it is all over the place and I would probably trip over it. It looks fast, so it might well be judgmental on my speeds!

Sharing-can I borrow your dog?, sounds like we would be fine together😬

Rainbow - what breed is your running companion? Does he/she get under your feet?

Fraggled-Hiils a not my thing, although if I get up one I give myself an extra pat on the back (aka extra chocolate hobnobs with my cup of tea).

Rainbow has just given me my aim for this week - to run a little further OR a little bit faster (but not as far) each time I go out.

Maple - she's a staffy, not a pedigree little barrel type though, she's quite lean and long legged (and a lot faster than me!) She doesn't get under my feet surprisingly, I got a running belt with a bungee type lead and she trots alongside pretty nicely and the elastic in the lead takes the strain when she does go a bit quickly. She's got the whole idea of it really quickly though, I don't know if all dogs would or would be too interested in sniffing etc.

And yes, no judgement from the dog Grin and I don't have to try and hold a conversation either!
