A support thread for anyone trying to get back into running or starting for the first time. Would love to have a bit of company.

I used to run quite a bit, though nothing impressive (managed a 1/2 marathon at my peak). Then I did far too much too soon after having my 3rd baby, and buggered my knees. Have not run for about 3 years.

Am just getting back to it now. Gently does it. Am terrified of hurting myself again. Have been seeing a PT with the goal of getting strong enough in all the right places to run regularly again.

Went for my first run on Friday. Aiming for 10 mins (PT instruction) but really enjoyed it and ran for 20. Didn't get very far though!!

2nd run was yesterday. 15 minutes, pitiful distance, lots of hills.

Looking forward to running again on Tues.

Sloooooww today. 9.18 km in 68 minutes. Didn't do anything Monday/Tuesday, so perhaps that's why.

I do think I need to stop giving myself such a hard time. Today was my sixth run after a gap of 15 years and I only started on May bank holiday, so it's probably OK to be where I am. I know I had been working out since mid Jan after doing nothing last year, but running is different.

Lambzig · 01/06/2016 11:49

Daughter, might be too late as you asked yesterday. I am not sure doing another 2K later in the day would build up your stamina to 6K - you might risk injury if your muscles are recovering from your earlier run. I don't think its a recipe for disaster apart from injury risk, but other than burning extra calories, I don't think it would improve you distance/speed.

I get that its hard to run if its verges etc. I am really lucky as there is a very long trail near me that allows me to run traffic free in both directions. Could you find another route? Maybe even one you drive to, is that possible. Is there a Park Run near you to try 5K? I bet you could kick up to 5K to do that.

CointreauVersial · 01/06/2016 12:42

Lambzig - you definitely shouldn't be hard on yourself! I have never managed more than 5k, and after a gap of 15 years you are doing amazingly well.

I overslept this morning - I managed to get out, but just did my "regular" circuit, which takes about 18 minutes. My legs felt like lead all the way round AND I was late for work. Blush

Whoever said that to you daughter was extremely rude.

How rude, Daughter! As long as you have decent running shoes and are not overdoing it you will be fine. Any exercise will speed up weightloss, and you'll end up with nice toned legs too.

9.25k today in 60 minutes, so happy with that. I think it's all about keeping going. How long before I get the nice toned legs (looks at fat knees in despair).

They WILL tone up - you'll have buns of steel before long. Grin

I did a 25 minute run this morning (for me that's no more than 4k, as I'm so slow). Unusually for me I got a stitch at 13 minutes and had to run for a while with my hands behind my head (at least I was on a secluded path so no-one saw me). Then at 22 minutes I really wanted to stop, so took myself up a side road to nose at some new houses as a distraction.

Fraggled · 05/06/2016 07:09

I keep dropping off! Still plodding away 3 times a week though and checking in here. Keep running everyone :)

MoonlightMedicine · 06/06/2016 15:47

Hello its Fraggled with my new name. Fancied a change. No running for me until Wednesday I reckon.

I am not going to get out running this week until Saturday as DH is away (I have a 3 year old and a 6 year old). Still wading through Body Revolution though and finished Phase 2 today. Very scared of phase 3.

Lambzig · 12/06/2016 14:43

9.25k in 63 minutes today. Bit slow. I think I need at least a mid-week run to start getting my speed up as well as my other workouts.

Stellar67 · 14/06/2016 08:18

May I join? I have done c25k, and I now want to do a 10k. But I seem to have regressed and am hovering around the 3-4K mark and life is getting in the way of me getting out.

Going out this morning, and decided to look for a bit of motivation. Well done all.

Stellar67 · 14/06/2016 13:29

A slow 5k completed. Reading other people's experiences certainly helps!

GuyMartinsSideburns · 14/06/2016 13:42

Hello can I join?

Used to run on and off for a few years but only around 5k each time 3x week. Then last year dh was ill and I didn't run for months. I joined a running group at the start of April, I'm really enjoying it and it means I'm running a good 10k at least once a week so far, though sometimes longer if I'm looping back. I've never ran that far before! Really enjoying it. I know I'd struggle to run that far by myself at the moment, plus I don't know the area too well either.

Need to make myself do a longer run over the weekends.

CointreauVersial · 14/06/2016 23:08

I'm still here...haven't posted recently as it's been hectic here and I haven't run for a few days. Slap wrist!

MoonlightMedicine · 15/06/2016 07:30

I'm losing my mojo! Not been out yet since before the weekend :(

Namechanger2015 · 15/06/2016 12:29

Hello, can I join too? I've done c25k a couple of times before to lose weight after having babies.
The weight has crept back on and I'm trying to get fitter and lose the weight plus also tone up.

I've started doing 10 min yoga workouts in the morning which are great and really wake my body up. I'm on week 7 day 1 of c25K and have just run 25 mins with one or two teeny stops in the middle.

I'm finding the boredom / monotony a bit of a challenge for these longer runs. I don't really like listening to music so I stick to r4 podcasts or TED talks but I found it hard work today. My legs and shins ached but I wasn't too out of breath which is good.

I have to continue as it seems to be the only exercise that really works for me.
