A support thread for anyone trying to get back into running or starting for the first time. Would love to have a bit of company.

I used to run quite a bit, though nothing impressive (managed a 1/2 marathon at my peak). Then I did far too much too soon after having my 3rd baby, and buggered my knees. Have not run for about 3 years.

Am just getting back to it now. Gently does it. Am terrified of hurting myself again. Have been seeing a PT with the goal of getting strong enough in all the right places to run regularly again.

Went for my first run on Friday. Aiming for 10 mins (PT instruction) but really enjoyed it and ran for 20. Didn't get very far though!!

2nd run was yesterday. 15 minutes, pitiful distance, lots of hills.

Looking forward to running again on Tues.

I'm in the Middle East Cointreau. It's reet warm.

I didn't run today. This is the first goal I have missed. I just feel tired and not like running - I was up until 1am at a party and didn't manage to eat even half my calories yesterday which is probably part of the reason for tiredness. I took the dog for a brisk walk instead.

Probably won't get a chance tomorrow either, unless I set my alarm and go at 5.30am. Will see.

May I join you please? This is very timely for me too, as I have not run for a few weeks. Need to get back on it.

My pattern is to do C25K, run for a bit and quite enjoy it then something happens (eg work) which gets me out of the habit. I then need to restart C25k at about week 4 and it takes me several months to get the motivation.

I am going on holiday in 6 weeks. It would be great to be a bit firmer by then. DH is out today and my DC are too small to be left alone, but tomorrow morning definitely. I am going to make DC walk into town with me, so that will be a 2.5m walk for us all (might be pushing it to get them to walk back!)

Good luck to everyone running today Smile

what can i do ladies? still pain in my legs. not just my shins also outer sides and feet. i really dont know how to sort this. ive tried heel dips, acupuncture, chiropractor. ive spent a fortune.

CointreauVersial · 01/05/2016 22:23

Heyyyy, Monty! Fancy seeing you here. Smile

I think going back to Week 3/4 of C25K works very well - I think I would pass out if I attempted the whole 5k in one go, after all the time off I've had.

Next run tomorrow morning. Should be dry...

Sorry you are suffering, woody. I can't offer much advice, I'm afraid. I assume you have decent running shoes??

woody2976 · 01/05/2016 22:25

yes thank you :) and ive had them checked. ive realised my left foot turns inwards quite a bit, not sure how to resolve that?

MontserratCaballe · 02/05/2016 09:25

Woody, I am no expert but would compression socks help at all? Lots of runners on a FB group I am in wear them for extra support. Might be worth a shot of you have tried other things?

Hello, CV, here I am again. You have inspired me to do something about my lady jogging. I am going away in 6 weeks and would like to feel a bit fitter than I do now. Maybe later on today I will pop out for a quick ladyjog round the block. Will see how it goes.

Good luck to everyone running today. Smile

BIWI · 02/05/2016 09:33

When I started running (also using C25K) I had a lot of shin pain (thankfully not shin splints), and had to stop for over a month, and then after several osteopath appointments, go right back to the beginning and start again.

Turned out that I wasn't stretching properly afterwards. Or doing the right stretches.

woody have you tried going to a running shop and have your gait analysed?

TwoLittleBlooms · 02/05/2016 11:31

Well I found my trainers but only managed one small 'run' (more like a very fast walk!) so far but I am thinking about signing up for a 5k run in September - keep me motivated (I am also on a diet (mfp/calorie counting) so may also encourage me to avoid filling my face too much!)

woody2976 · 02/05/2016 13:48

good idea yes ive got compression socks dont know if they helped much. maybe stretching would help. ive definitely got out of the habit of that.

CointreauVersial · 02/05/2016 19:04

I had another successful run today - I was full of the joys of Spring, even though the weather was a bit dull. I left a good five minutes before DH, and he still caught me up.

TwoLittleBlooms - as least you made it out there. Did you manage to get round the block, Monty?

SharingMichelle · 02/05/2016 19:41

Woody - I was unable to run because of unbearable pain in my knees. I'd tried everything and given up - figured I was never going to run again. Then I got myself a personal trainer. He has had me on a fairly intensive regime to strengthen the muscles that support my knees, and it's really worked. He said he could have me running again in 6 weeks. He did. Pain free.

CointreauVersial · 04/05/2016 21:07

Running tomorrow...onto Week 4 of C25K.

CointreauVersial · 05/05/2016 18:14

Did my run......Am I on my own on this thread now?

Hope you are not letting the dust settle on those trainers again? Wink

I'm here but not running at the moment thanks to back to back sickness bug and tonsillitis :(

CointreauVersial · 05/05/2016 21:05

Ah!

Daughter - that's tough. Luckily mine are all teens so I can run at will.

Get well soon, Fraggled.

poocatcherchampion · 05/05/2016 21:16

Me me me. Can I join??

I've never run before and have just completed week 1 of c25k. I am delighted with myself.

I've had 3 babies in 4 years and youngest is 6months and I feel the need to get active. I am not sure I totally love the running but I def like the energy it is giving me for the rest of the day.

It is really tricky to get out as I have all 3 all day but dh is being really supportive and I have just been out this evening - and I rarely leave the house in the evening as I am too pooped to get off the sofa.

2 things

  • my knees really hurt. Should I push through? (Couple of stone to be lost) if I was to get new shoes where would I go for expert advice and how much ££ am I looking at?
  • I'm using the NHS app on android. I haven't yet but apparently you can play your own music alongside.

Anyone else been out today?

CointreauVersial · 05/05/2016 23:54

Well done, Poo (may I call you Poo? Grin).

It's a great feeling, isn't it? I was 43 when I first got into it, having never run for more than 30 seconds in my life before (I've had 6 months out so am repeating weeks 3-9).

When mine were younger I used to run first thing in the morning, before DH left for work (in fact, I still do, even though mine are old enough to be left). Not easy with a tiny, though.

Knees shouldn't hurt! I would definitely suggest decent shoes, which will ensure you don't put strain on your joints. Find a running shop or decent sports shop that can analyse your gait and recommend the right shoes. Mine cost about £70; quite a lot of money, but I felt like I was running on springs afterwards. You really don't want to risk injury. Running on softer surfaces (trails/grass) can also help protect your joints.

I use a C25K app and play Spotify in the background. They work together perfectly. I can't run in silence!

Fraggled · 07/05/2016 19:18

I went out this morning. Should have been on w4r3 but something just kicked in and I ran for 20 mins on stop. Felt great!

TwoLittleBlooms · 07/05/2016 19:37

Just been out tonight - today involved 60 seconds of running in between brisk walking and was not a great success - I fell whilst to trying stop as I didn't see a car coming out of a local sports club car park (my fault not theirs) and tore my only pair of leggings and badly grazed my knees and my hands - this was in the first five minutes and the first running bout. But...I continued and finished the 30 minute session (although couldn't run 60 seconds solid - so ran until I could run no more - about 50 seconds so not great but will keep going!)

CointreauVersial · 07/05/2016 21:56

Ouch. Well done for continuing after your fall, TwoLittleBlooms - I'd have probably gone home!

Nice when that happens, Fraggled. Unfortunately it can sometimes go the other way - when you're supposed to run for 20 minutes and you fizzle out after 10. Hmm

Next run tomorrow - won't be needing my jacket and gloves, that's for sure.

Fraggled · 08/05/2016 06:08

Yes Cointreau, I've had a few of those in my time too (this is my third go at C25k).

Sorry to hear you had a fall Blooms, well done for carrying on :)

CointreauVersial · 08/05/2016 11:32

Phew! Much respect to you, Sharing, in the middle-eastern heat - 20 degrees in Surrey nearly finished me off! Week 4 Run 2 complete, but only just, and I'm now sipping an iced coffee in the shade, relieved it's over.

Actually, the takeaway curry and beer I was shipping from last night probably didn't help...Blush

Maplestirrup · 08/05/2016 16:29

I managed 23 mins non stop on Fri, although it was v slow. I am not a natural runner so I find it hard, very hard, 3 months ago I couldn't run for 90 seconds, so I have improved a bit, and I am happy with that improvement. If I could run 5k in a reasonable time, I would be thrilled.

Can I ask - where to you put your iPhones/devices or whatever you carry with you?
My running pants only have a tiny pocket, and I have yet to see a fitness top or pants with a pocket big enough for a phone? I tend to carry the phone, but that is getting on my nerves now. Are those armband things any good?
