Well, after torn calf in May, I'm back with the programme at last!

Did scunthorpe on Saturday in a terrible time, but at least I got round.

Onward and upward.

LottaMarten · 31/07/2014 22:49

Ooh another question. I am used to listening through one ear phone (leaving other ear 'unplugged' so I can hear traffic) while I run.. Is that acceptable at park run?

Blatherskite · 31/07/2014 23:03

There's nothing in the regulations about headphones. Many people use them every week.

If you intend to enter races though, it's worth remembering that most UKA registered races will stipulate that headphones are banned and use of them can get you disqualified so it's good to get used to running without them if you can imo.

Plus, it makes parkrun all that more social if people are chatting on the way round Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 01/08/2014 16:08

Hi thenightsky, glad to hear you're back to it!

Headphones are fine at parkrun LottaMarten but I would just say be aware of others who may be trying to pass. Agree with Blatherskite about getting used to running without headphones if you're planning to run road races, for safety reasons they do threaten disqualification :(

I'm RD this week and actually didn't struggle too much for volunteers which was nice :)

Blatherskite · 01/08/2014 16:24

I'm RD too cinnamon. First time ever officially! Volunteer roster is full though and I have other RDs doing Timekeeping and Number Checking so all should be fine. Am most worried about the run briefing to be honest! Little me trying to get and keep the attention of 500 runners with nowhere high to stand. I'm going to need the megaphone I think!

cinnamongreyhound · 01/08/2014 16:39

Bury St Edmunds have a megaphone and I was seriously considering one even for our little parkrun Wink. I stand on a tree stump and shout loud!

Blatherskite · 01/08/2014 16:45

We have a rubbish one but the ED works for the local gym and they let us borrow theirs if we ask nicely.

Need to write notes for my briefing I think or else I'm going to panic and clam up.

ThursdayLast · 01/08/2014 16:52

Hi Edith!
I'm further down, my parkrun is Lanhydrock so if you ever feel the need to visit Cornwall give me a shout. I would love to try the Plym Valley one eventually.

Good luck for your RD blathers I'm sure you'll do a wonderful job!

I ran parkrun with headphones last week for the first time and it was ok. I was trying to figure out why I find parkrun so intense compared to when I just head out the door, and thought that difference might be that I ordinarily run listening to podcasts. I still found it intense though, and also not a little cut off from the rest of the field.

thenightsky · 01/08/2014 20:23

I like to wear a stopwatch and check my times at each k marker. I try to pace myself evenly for each K. I don't listen to music as I like to say hello, good morning etc to everyone I know as they pass me, or I pass them.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 01/08/2014 22:03

Welcome back night! Brilliant to hear you are back Smile

No park run for me tomorrow - I am off to Bath for an OU summer school for the week tomorrow morning. I will look forward to seeing all the post-parkrun updates Smile

Headphones have been fine at any Parkrun ive been at - official races are different and each have their own rules. One earphone in, one out sounds fine.

Got my buns ready for tomorrow's 50th! Weather forecast is dreadful so I think we may get less than our usual 100 runners. I'm going to biro Lindsay sharpes " get out strong commit" on my hand, and am toying between usain bolts pull/ aim stance and the mobot as my victory celebration. Possibly both.

ThursdayLast · 01/08/2014 22:12

YOU HAVE TO DO BOTH

I feel a bit sick!

Wish me luck.

MelanieCheeks · 02/08/2014 08:31

You'll be great, Blathers. It's pouring down here - have a good one folks!

Blatherskite · 02/08/2014 12:43

It went really well!

I need a drink now though

cinnamongreyhound · 02/08/2014 12:50

Yay! Congrats on your 50th Melaniecheeks!

Well done Blatherskite! Although we all know you'd be fab! We had a smooth one today but only had 45 runners so it's a bit easier than yours!

MelanieCheeks · 02/08/2014 13:21

Well done Blathers, I'm sure you're relieved it all went smoothly!

Despite the rain we had 93 runners, lots of friendly faces to cheer me on. Time of 28:56 - not a PB , but my fastest since breaking my ankle 12 weeks ago....

And yes, I did a Usain Bolt pose for photos afterwards. Cant stop smiling now.

LottaMarten · 02/08/2014 14:30

I did it! There were 514 runners (Edinburgh) and I got round in 25.55. So pleased that couch to 5k worked! Was good but I needed my music. Thank you for all the tips

Blatherskite · 02/08/2014 16:39

We had 455 runners this morning. That was fairly daunting to have to do the race briefing to! There is a picture of me with a huge megaphone looking really, really tiny while doing it.

I got loads of positive comments though. People said they usually miss the briefing but could hear me well and we got started on time which is the most important thing. There were no major catastrophes and everyone seemed happy. Even the weather was perfect. I'm totally wiped now though and could do with a nap. I'm not usually this tired when I've run it!

Congratulations on your 50th Melanie and on your parkrun Lotta

Knackerelli · 02/08/2014 20:38

Well done blathers! Knew you could do it!

Congratulations on your 50th Melanie, loving the thought if a bolt style pose! Very cool.

Really glad you enjoyed it lotta, welcome to the parkrun family!

And congratulations to all other parkrunners today Smile

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 02/08/2014 23:33

Well done to all runners - some super-speedy ones here this week Smile and to cinnamon and Blathers for RD'ing because there wouldn't be park run without volunteers.

Thanks Melanie on your 50th

In the end the boys didn't go, either with or without DH. I will drag them by the hair next week Grin.

I have met a fellow runner at my summer school. His 10K PB is

karatekimmi · 03/08/2014 06:15

Congrats on your 50th melanie and well done on RD'ing and anyone else who has volunteered!! I need to volunteer again, I normally Marshall somewhere with mini kimmi but always fancied scanning until your post ohone

As we were visiting Thomas the Tank at East Lancs railway we went to Bolton parkrun. The weather was mainly drizzly instead of sheeting it down and the volunteers were lovely, just the massive hill in the middle that you had to do twice was a killer!!

cinnamongreyhound · 04/08/2014 15:36

That's a great time, especially for your first one lottaMarten!!

Amazing OhOneOhTwoOhThree, I couldn't even do half a mile at 5:30's!!!! Have you got your t-shirt yet? The last few I've got are different to the ones before, no little holes iykwim! Not sure which I prefer!
