Hi all. Good running and er other chats. I haven't been this week - decided it best to give my shin splint a week off before proper training for half marathon begins

My goal for next year - complete cambidge half and Blenheim tri. Not sure I'm really capable of a sub 2 hr half!

Had a crazy day today as flew up to Glasgow to see some clients which involved getting up at 4.45am ... On the train home now and nik nak a roonied now. Dp apparently has wine in - hurrah!

Glasgow weather was dreich btw!

monkeyLFDTwench · 17/11/2011 20:29

Phew, just done the Shred with DH after we put the boys to bed. Goodness knows what anyone would think if they heard us, lots of puffing and panting and sniggering at the cheesy lines (especially the butt kicks "she is kicking herself IN the ASS quite LITERALLY!" anyone?). Was a bit hard doing it after circuits earlier, but OK. I feel I deserve a drink now.

I'm still (whispers) 2.5 stone overweight after ds3. Really bothers me that the weight dropped off fairly easily after ds1 and ds2 but not this time. I need a good arse kicking.

If I'm brutally honest I'm pretty challenged appearance wise (that's not false modesty, I honestly know where I am in the pecking order!) BUT the advantage of never having been a looker is (1) I'm very comfortable with ageing because I don't feel I've got amazing looks to lose, and (2) my DH not only bizarrely thinks that I'm an absolute stunner (should have gone to Specsavers), but married me for my sparkling personality and wit (!)

rhetorician · 17/11/2011 20:38

monkey in similar position, never having much cared about my looks (and having improved with age). Although DD asked me this morning 'what are those?' pointing to my eyebrows (as I thought) 'oh they're furry!' and then 'what are those?' pointing to my frown lines...

I think I am going to get the shred to assist with getting rid of 10lbs....

fanny pics on profile seeing as you asked Grin Seriously, am not swishy and gorgeous so don't build your hopes up, am just me Smile I also never recievd an email confirming my entry, and had trouble uploading a pic. There is a thread on the RW site - seems a few folk had issues.

Anyways, we are ALL gorgeous in our own way. Can you feel teh love on here tonight?!

peachLFDTsmuggler · 17/11/2011 21:08

I will defo vote for you both!

monkey, having seen you on fb I would have to disagree. I think you look lovely!!!

I am average height but with hideously short legs, they are also very heavy no matter what weight I am. Sigh... I have crappy muscle tone, so will get working on this when I get back training. Guy at running club said I had a runner's build. Compact, he said. Not how I see myself, but think my self image is not maybe reflective of reality. Will be interested to see what I look like once baby here. I love being pregnant and like the way I look when I am, but afterwards is a different matter, ha ha!

The important question is, sfx, how many pens did you snaffle?

backwardpossom · 17/11/2011 21:11

fanny pics on profile seeing as you asked

Now there's a line you never thought you'd ever read Wink

fannybanjo · 17/11/2011 21:16

Hahahahaha I was about to post the same re fanny pics....

DrNo you're gorgeous Envy as are your family. Smile You and DH look so well matched! I can tell that just from a photo, oh yes I can.

Talking of "fanny" pics.... DD1 just told a Mum from school who dropped her off after Harriers and was chatting to DH and I in our kitchen that "my dad has photos of my mum's boobs and bum on his phone... LOOK !!" oh my
Fucking god. Sweat pored down my chest. BlushBlush

monkeyLFDTwench · 17/11/2011 21:30

Fanny pics Grin.

One of the mums at school had a boob job, and her dd took great delight in telling the whole school about mummy's new boobies Smile. apparently her mummy had to show her old boobies to a man who agreed they needed to be fixed, so he made mummy some new ones!

rhetorician · 17/11/2011 21:36

wheely it sounds like DD2 at least has the right associations - she just wants all of the accoutrements!

DebiTheScot · 17/11/2011 21:53

Argh fanny, what was on the photos?

So how do you upload Garmin data for the world (you lot) to see? I want to show you one graph just because I like the shape of it.

I've been looking at my miles over the past 3 weeks (since starting again properly after last lot of shin splints and duathlon) and I don't think I've upped it too quickly.
Week 1: Sun- Duathlon
Thurs- 4 miles
Sat- 3 miles
Week 2: Mon- 4.3 miles (I thought I'd run twice but maybe counted the Sun of wk 3 in this week)
Week 3: Sun- 4.6 miles (+ 1.5 v slowly with ds2)
Wed- 3.5 miles
Fri- 5 miles
Week 4: Sun- 6 miles
Wed- 3.3 miles (yesterday)

Mmm maybe week 2 to 3 was a bit of a jump.

DebiTheScot · 17/11/2011 22:06

Have looked at the local leisure centre classes. I could do body pump, body combat, circuits or legs, bums & tums. Any thoughts?
Was thinking maybe 1 class and 2 runs a week till Christmas then up it to 3 runs and the class in Jan.

Wiifitmama · 17/11/2011 22:13

Debi....I do Body Pump twice a week and love it. It works every muscle group in turn using weights which means that the parts of you that running doesn't tone get a good workout. It really changes your body shape, toning everything.

fannybanjo · 17/11/2011 22:14

Debi yep, you went too far in your profession to run more. Lay off it - the shin splints will go but let them repair. Out of all those classes I'd go for circuits BUT don't do the sprints. Second choice would be body pump.

fannybanjo · 17/11/2011 22:15

Not profession(!) (fecking phone) should read progression.

fannybanjo · 17/11/2011 22:17

You know what - I forget the whole world can read this thread. I feel like its just us chatting. Shit bit too much info.

DebiTheScot · 17/11/2011 22:17

is treadmill running better for the shins? I wish my friend the sports physio would hurry up and get home from her skiing trip (where she's a guide for a blind skier in the world championships!) so I can get some free advice.

fannybanjo · 17/11/2011 22:24

Debi grass or sand running the best for your limbs then treadmill and trails then road (Tarmac) then pavement being the worst (crushed concrete). Maybe find a park and try some soft ground before a treadmill and do some jogging around it.

fannybanjo · 17/11/2011 22:25

If I can run on a Tarmac road I do as a preference to a pavement.

bonkersLFDT20 · 17/11/2011 22:30

Rhet sent me a Garmin ner ner ner ner ner.
I've got a Garmin,
I'm gonna win.
Rhet is not a criminal.

rhetorician · 17/11/2011 22:32

I've always thought that sand was a terrible surface for running on, unless it's fairly compacted. I hate concrete - most of the pavements hereabouts are made from poured concrete. 6 miles of that of an afternoon and you really feel it in the old bones and tendons. You do get used to it though - but I have been injury free for all of 2011...grass/dirt trail the best though. I try to do most of my running there (I was passed by a bloke in the park and I was running on the tarmac path, he on the grass alongside and he said 'that's really bad for you, run on the grass'. He is right).

Treadmill not too bad either but it is oh my god so so so boring! I use it when I have to, when weather is bad, or I need to keep to a strict time-slot, or sometimes, to run intervals, or check progress. At most once a week, and usually for a shortish (3-4 miles) run.

Am convinced after googling that I need to lose 10lbs. Worried I will look scrawny...my mother will be thrilled, however, being thin being the only achievement of mine that ever seems to matter to her (but that's another thread, isn't it?).

OP posts:
rhetorician · 17/11/2011 22:33

ps when do you think I should break it to DP that I want to run a marathon next year...when we have 2 kids under 4, she has to go back to work?

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 17/11/2011 22:38

rhet soft sand great for joints but VERY gruelling to run on. Used to run and live near the beach and it's a good workout.

Re losing weight - if you want to then do it if it will make you happy but if it'll turn you into a miserable bastard then sod it!

bonkers make sure you don't post on a random thread your splits! Bet you can't wait to use it!

Been devouring the elevation for Conwy HM. It's a 400ft climb in just under a mile... And a big fuck off cliff type one just before it. Shittttttt.

fannybanjo · 17/11/2011 22:40

Yep, let her get the next couple months out the way, you discreetly start your training (she won't notice) then just slip it into the conversation on night as she's drifting off!

backwardpossom · 17/11/2011 22:40

rhet do it for you, not for anyone else! If you don't want to do it, then don't! :)
