So......what have I missed tonight....no babies yet I see - peach did I read you having a sweep tomorrow - ohh good luck with that

We are all beautiful in our own way.....hmm cue for a song ?

Sounds as if the potty training is progressing well rhet and getting there wheely - hope it continues in the right direction.

moshi - sounds as if things are well on the way for your move - how exciting

Weight - my biggest acheivement this year has been maintaining last year's weight loss. TBH I still find it a battle and now I have old lady veteran's hormones to cope with I am sure it will get much harder. But that was my main goal for this year.

Running goals for 2012

  • 5K in 25 (Current PB 26:40)
  • 10K in 55 (Current PB 58:30)
And most of all that pesky 1 minute and 9 sections to get me below 2 hours in a HM.
rhetorician · 17/11/2011 22:51

didn't realise that sand was good for joints - did know that it's a bugger to run on. fanny your conwy hill is about the same as my glendalough one - that was 1600ft over just under 4 miles. You are much more used to hills (proper ones!) than I am so I'd say you'll be fine.

I am planning on using one day a week after Christmas to drive from work out to the Dublin mountains (about 20 mins away) and run some hilly trails. I reckon I could teach my class 9-10, get out there, run for an hour/hour and a half and be back to teach my next class at one. Parking might be a problem on campus at lunchtime...am going to have to think this through...

OP posts:
DebiTheScot · 17/11/2011 22:54

I figured it out myself
Look at the graphs.

I like the graphs on the connect, the scales are much better.

I don't have any sand near me but could do grass running. It's a bit scarier in the dark though! Never thought before about pavement being worse than road.
I think I might try a couple of classes and if I like them I might join the gym. The classes are £5.90 each and I can get monthly membership for about £30 a month (it's a council run gym and because I'm emplyed by the council I get a discount) so it wouldn't take much more for it to be worth it. I don't like the sound of treadmill running but don't want to not run.

stickyLFDTfingers · 17/11/2011 23:00

Glad we're all beautiful in our own way. I am in niche market Wink. I also have my own "quick"...

That sounds like a lovely plan rhet- I had a sudden flashback to the track up to Djouce! I loved Djouce. Is the parking still better up by the Law Faculty? I used to find that (10 years ago!!)

I was just talking to DP about Sunderland marathon. He said - hmmmm.

DebiTheScot · 17/11/2011 23:00

Mmm just realised my real name is on my garmin account and it's pretty easy to figure out where I live. Wonder if I should change that!?

stickyLFDTfingers · 17/11/2011 23:02

I would debi. It's not worth the risk.

fannybanjo · 17/11/2011 23:03

rhet even if you went out to the hills and did some intervals on them for half an hour you'd benefit hugely. I know I keep saying it but the hills have made huge impact on my aerobic fitness and my pace. I can't recommend them enough. There's a reason why (as well as altitude training) the Kenyan's run so well! Get some good speed intervals in (even for a minute) over next couple of weeks too. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. I know you like your heart rate monitor but maybe not use it just once and just go with how you feel. We can be too technical. You are a superb endurance runner, I reckon you have far more speed in you than you realise. Unleash the beast!

Debi I was Shock at your "running" speed then realised it was cycling!

MoshiMoshi · 17/11/2011 23:07

debi et al - Be warned that I have heard of people stalking female runners through their public runs on their Garmin etc accounts so best to not identify yourself if possible. Give as little away as possible assuming the worst from weirdos after you gorgeous running ladies. Grin

fannybanjo · 17/11/2011 23:09

Moshi really?? Shock I'd quite like a running stalker.... Grin NOT. Although I do have a gypsy who follows me sometimes on his horse and cart. Does that count?

squix · 17/11/2011 23:31

sticky Smile yes - I have my own definition of 'quick' too.

SonicMiddleAge · 18/11/2011 01:41

Debi ? I know how you feel. If I can?t run I really struggle to find anything that is as effective. Pre-DC I used to do spinning classes 4 times a week, and that worked (and was actually much better on my knees then running) but the beauty of running for me is that I can just fit it in whenever I get a free hour or so, and while classes tend to be around 6 or 7 pm, having been at work all day missing bed time is a no-go for me.

Got out this morning - Run felt terrible, one of those runs where you never feel you get into your stride, and struggle the whole way. I actually had to walk for a minute or so after cliff st (I generally will do anything rather then walk on a run, even if I?m basically running on the spot). Still I got round the 15km, and somehow managed to knock some time off compared to Sunday ? was just under 82min, so think I should definitely aim sub 80 next week - I probably spent at least 2 min waiting at traffic lights etc.

Hatwoman I also got asked by dd if I was going to cross the line first. When I said no I got ?it?s all about winning? DH snorting with laughter in the corner. DD then followed up with ?you need to really try mummy?...

moshi your posts are sounding more Californian by the day. I take it that all that limits is goals is ourselves? Smile

bonkersLFDT20 · 18/11/2011 06:54

Milkman has not brought our milk this morning bastard

I cannot function without my morning cuppa. Heck, my heart won't even start without it. I've just sent a really grumpy email to the milk depot. They'll probably just laugh!

Ah well. No running today, but DH has promised that I'll be able to get out for a long one over the w/e. I'll be able to try out my new Garmin!!!

Me me me.

MoshiMoshi · 18/11/2011 09:23

Grin about the Californian sounding me. DH keeps telling me I am Californian. All I know is that I do not want American children which means they will have to return to the UK for some of their education. DH is practically rolling his eyes at me saying this before we have even set foot there Grin. But in all honesty, having grown up in Hong Kong with British kids and American kids, I know who I was more drawn to and that is why I returned to where my dad is from and where my childhood memories are from. Maybe a part of me doesn't want to let go of my link with my dad. But I don't think there is anything wrong with admitting that and it being a reason I want to retain our UK links... is there?

MoshiMoshi · 18/11/2011 09:24

Sorry about the me me me post.

squix · 18/11/2011 10:49

Smile moshi nothing wrong with admitting that and wanting to maintain those links at all. It's all about celebrating heratige and being close to those that matter - even if we can't be physically close for what ever reason.

rhetorician · 18/11/2011 11:14

nothing wrong with that at all moshi; just done 12.5km - pretty good - struggled a bit around the 9k mark for some reason. BUT I am running in asics cumulus (having always had the pricer nimbus) and find that my toes go numb in them - I assume they are cut a little bit tighter across the top of the foot or something? it's not a massive deal, but not very comfy...I think I'll try and keep them for shorter runs in future.

Poor DP was awake from 2.30-6.30, so I think she's gone back to bed now. DD at nursery. Might do a bit of cleaning.

OP posts:
rhetorician · 18/11/2011 11:52

by the way, this is the elevation on the kind of trails I could run 20 mins drive from where I work...

bonkers that kind of absolute systems failure is the reason that I am glad that we don't have a milkman! DD has lactose free milk and worse case scenario there's always a spare carton of her milk (we keep a UHT one for emergencies). Couldn't function without my morning cuppa or ten either.

How much water do most of you drink in a day? I am finding myself feeling thirsty (on that run, for example) and I think I am not drinking enough (or I have diabetes...)

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 18/11/2011 12:29

Moshi that is an ace route however I would do that in sections - maybe aim to do 2 miles climb at threshold pace then turn around and recover back. Each time you do it add some more distance. It depends whether you want to run up it or walk it. Obviously you are fit and strong enough to do the whole route but your aim is to do it running. I'd love to have a go at that route myself!

Moshi I agree with everyone else, your prerogative to feel however you want - you love London and the UK so it makes it very hard. However I have a sneaky feeling you're going to embrace the Californian culture more than you realise - your do or die attitude is perfect! Plus they don't build you up in the US then knock you down - they admire people who succeed, not like in this country.

5 miler today with very steep, sharp hill in middle - 200ft in 0.40 mile which is a killer but we kept under 9.30m/m up it. Ready for Conwy Cockwatch however my friend and I have spent too much time devouring the hills in it and fretting. We've split the race into 4 mile splits. Hopefully that will work...

bonkers I cancelled our milk being delivered last week. It was going sour very quickly plus was £60 a month and another bill I didn't need. Hope you got your brew! I'm having a Chai Tea from Starbucks that DH just brought me in.

Off to iron the bedding.

fannybanjo · 18/11/2011 12:30

Sorry should read Rhet not Moshi in first paragraph Hmm

rhetorician · 18/11/2011 12:40

yes I was wondering about that! This is the half marathon routes and there are plenty of trails; fabulous views of the city, the bay and on a good day, North Wales...I'm really excited about it. but would like to do a recce first, if I am going to be running under time constraints. I suppose I could aim at doing the whole circuit in

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 18/11/2011 12:47

Yes set yourself a goal. To accustom yourself to the hills though - aim to do good pace but shorter distance. Run up until you can't do anymore. Recover. Run up again. Recover. When that feels comfortable, add length or time on feet onto your next one. Before you know it, you'll be doing the 6 miles of hill at your easy running pace. Then you'll notice your easy running pace on the flat becoming faster. I love 'em me! My aim is to do as many hills as possible then do a flat HM (not sure how flat Blackpool is). Then I can see how far I've come.

rhetorician · 18/11/2011 12:53

yes, tracking elevation on my Garmin (I can't imagine what you were thinking fanny suggesting that I might leave the house without it. Tut.) has made me realise that I don't really run anything remotely resembling a hill, as opposed to a slope...(this reminds me of my mum, who when she was first married lived in the fens, on a road called something 'Rise'. She said that after about a year she did notice that it did go up very very slightly :o) - which I am more than happy to run. But I live in a flat city surrounded by hills...must go and get DD

OP posts:
Hatwoman · 18/11/2011 13:29

hi folks - just a quick hello. did a good 5 miles today with 800 feet of hill - and a pb. I'm away for a few days - running kit packed for some altitute training - see you all next week - have a good weekend.

squix · 18/11/2011 13:47

hatwoman - enjoy, have a good weekend

Working at home today so just done a quick 3 and a bit miles, good mix of trails, roads and hills. Made myself maintain a steady pace up the hills, hard work but am hoping it pays off - knew if was hard work 'cos I felt a bit sick with slightly wobbly legs at the top of one. I can also announce that I have found my mantra 'one minute quicker' (OMQ) seemed to do it for me Grin

Feeling a bit blue today - we are taking all DD's baby equipment (buggy, cot bed, high chair) to an NCT nearly new sale tomorrow - I decided that it was about time given that the appearance of DC2 would now be very unlikely - and I guess this is part of accepting that. Although I have decided that some of the proceeds might just go towards a new pair of boots.

And fanny ironing bedding Shock - don't tell me the rest of you do this as well?

stickyLFDTfingers · 18/11/2011 14:14

squix that is sad to hear, it must be tough taking it in.

To cheer you up - nah to too much ironing. Might do pillow cases if I can be arsed and they're looking too scruffy (M+S non-iron ones rule!). But duvet covers? Shock. Fanny is clearly a Stepford wife with added running functionalities...
