squix · 21/10/2011 12:08

Shorts....shorts...what are these things you speak of?

fannybanjo · 21/10/2011 12:47

encyclo how lovely going for a walk with your older neighbours! Warmed cockles on me heart that did!

Shorts aren't for me, I wear tights even in high summer. Shorts tend to give me a fannybanjo...

Well, I am official fucked. I can't move. 16 miles in the bag and it was the worst and hardest run I have ever undertaken in my life. I got to 8 miles and kind of realised that what with me being ill last week, missing training etc, that my legs (although physically felt great) just weren't moving like usual. My friend was exactly the same too. We aimed for 9.30m/m which we did continually for 12 miles but mile 14 hit and in Moshi's words, the wheels fell off. I have never pushed my body through such pain but I carried on, just slowed my pace to 10m/m. So average pace of 16 miles was 9.40m/m which is only 10 secs more than I aimed for so quite happy but when I consider we did 15 miles in 2.15 2 weeks ago, very disappointed. Why do we do this to ourselves...?!

Just devouring a huge bowl of homemade Minestrone soup!

Updated with Reindeer Run on 27/11 - we get to wear antlers!

Peach - hope you've managed to sort something out for your trip.

DrNo - I did smile at your 'we have a hotel...*

futurity · 21/10/2011 14:14

I want to do a run with antlers! I think there is one at Woburn Abbey which is the closest to me...might have to look into it.

fanny well done for getting through that run...sounds tough...seems like the illness took it out of you the other week but you still managed to battle through at a good pace.

I've just got back from lunchtime swim...it was full of lots of men in tight shorts...I didn't know where to look! Luckily I was able to negotiate the lane etiquette and practice what I learnt the other day...its weird having to account for other people and keep an eye on where they are and what they are doing compared to running where I just have to think about myself and not getting run over by bikes or cars.

FairyBasslet · 21/10/2011 15:31

Quick check in on way up to Scotland for half term.

Peach - I can't say anything more than everyone else has said, other than cancer is such an evil disease.

Bumply - I might run the 5k round Arthur's Seat on Sunday. Would have to sign up on the day but I do have my running gear with me so would seem a shame not to...

Pawsnclaws · 21/10/2011 16:37

Goodness me, well done fanny - you're well on your way to that marathon. I never did more than 20 miles in training (and in fact for Chester my longest run was 18) so ..... which one are you signing up for?! You know you want to!

Just don't forget though that marathon training is meant to be done at a slower pace than your intended marathon pace, or you will well and truly knacker yourself Wink.

Do it fairy, do it do it do it do it!

futurity I think there is a Santa run in St Albans every Christmas. I did the Buntingford 10 a few years back (can't be too far from you?) and really enjoyed it, it's a lovely hilly course - but sadly apparently booked already this year.

Interesting point about running and trying to avoid complete twats other road and pavement users. When I went out last night the tally was: one car backing at speed off a drive, one dog lunging at me (luckily I ran across a grass verge and into the road, so was a good distance away - it still had a good old bark and lunge), and two (adult) cyclists riding at full pelt on the pavement in the dark with no lights (worry not though, as both were wearing helmets so it's only pedestrians that are at risk Angry). It does irritate me tbh, as I'm there decked out like a complete numpty in all my hi-viz gear and wrist lights (plus I don't use my music at that time of evening) - and no-one else cares (sob).

On a lighter note, what's this with DrN and her hotel - oooh, get you! I once dropped a massive clanger with a horribly wealthy mum from school, who said she was packing ready for a villa holiday, and I said "oh are you renting a villa?" Honestly - if looks could kill! It was obviously her own villa (in Monaco), and she was disgusted at the very idea of renting someone else's house. I should have know really, they live in a £5m house plus they have a £3m house they haven't managed to sell yet, plus the villa. How the other half live ....

tulip27 · 21/10/2011 16:38

Hello all. Havn't posted with you for a couple of weeks as I have just been to darn jealous of you all. (well done for all your fabulous running and times thou)

I need to pick your brains about shin splints. MINE WONT GO AWAY. Last 2 weeks have been niggling so I dropped to running once a week and did spinning 3 times per wk. Last wk seemed a bit better so did 6 miles, 3 miles and 10 miles with a couple of spinning classes inbetween. Now I am in agony. Ok except when I try to run. So have iced, rested, not even been spinning and it just doesn't feel any better.

Help...... Have a 10k next weekend and HM 20th Nov. Anyone have any experience of this?

peachsmuggler · 21/10/2011 16:43

Thanks everyone for the sympathy and the words of wisdom. Tried booking Virgin train to Glasgow but they had no seat reservations left!!! Am sure there will actually be seats, but couldn't take the risk so going to Edinburgh instead and then will hop on train through to Glasgow. Will be exhausting no doubt, but will be good to have time to myself albeit on train! My dad said he and his wife are overwhelmed that I am coming up so am really glad I decided to go. First class was going yo be a blimmin fortune so just got a standard ticket. However usually at weekends, once you are on the train, they
offer first class upgrades for £15 each way, so will do that.

Wheely, DD was born day after due date, so hopefully have no reason to expect DD2 will be super early. Fingers (not to mention legs) crossed!

Thanks DrNo, am staying at my sisters house, but thanks for the thought re. hotel, you are very kind. I too, thought from your first post that you were the Paris Hilton of Yorkshire!!

good luck to our runners this weekend, lbby, bumply, debi, and of course, the lovely sfx

Pawsnclaws · 21/10/2011 17:43

tulip sorry no real experience of shin splints - I do get a niggle now and again, but only when I've pushed either the speed or distance in a way I know I shouldn't have. I'm not sure what you do where the problem seems to be a chronic one.

peach glad you've made a decision, so is it actually tomorrow you're off? Don't be afraid to shove that belly forward and wail "HUGE PREGNANT WOMAN COMING THROUGH, MIND YER BACKS!" or some such if anyone gets in your way.

peachsmuggler · 21/10/2011 18:13

Good call paws, yes train at 8 tomorrow so leaving house about 6.45 .Uuurrrggghhh, will hopefully get snooze on train!

Themasterandmargaritas · 21/10/2011 18:44

Peach Sad Sad so sorry to hear your news. Have a safe trip. Not much help now but you should be able to fly domestic routes if your doc ok's it. It's international routes that they worry re jurisdiction in the air.

Good luck all racers this weekend. No running for me as I'm in the middle of the bush with large hippos and crocs around us! Isnt technology amazing?

Sorry not to mention anyone else but I'm on my phone.

OP posts:
WishIwasCherryMenlove · 21/10/2011 18:50

Evening all

I survived the running club! It was a bit scary and intimidating standing about with the serious people at the start but I wore my tights to look like a Proper Runner. Went out with rye slowest group but it was too slow for me - still, a novelty to be easily outpacing everyone at the front.

peach I hope your journey goes ok and your weekend visit is good. Definitely don't be afraid to be pushy in getting a seat.

tulip are your shoes ok? More supportive ones might help shin splints, a proper running shop will fit them for you. Ice helped me after runs. Plus mine got better as I got more into running

peachsmuggler · 21/10/2011 19:14

Well done cherry, you'll be running with the top group soon!

Thanks master, yeah I considered it, but had stuff on today and wasn't sure I could fit in trip to docs too, to get letter, but ta. Your camping trip sounds amazing, slightly more exciting than our last one to Dorset! Smile

Wheelybug · 21/10/2011 19:38

peach - hope all goes as well as it can this weekend. You're doing the right thing. Thinking of you. Remember paws' wise words.

Well done on running club Cherry.

M&M - camping sounds amazing. Not only have we seen the Lion King recently but my best friend just got back from 3 weeks in Kenya inc. Kilimanjaro. Am waiting to hear all about it but expecting to be very Envy. But then she's desperate for hubbie and kids so jsut goes to show grass is always greener. I am waiting until dd2 is old enough and then booking a safari (a few years away I think !).

Wheelybug · 21/10/2011 19:57

And of course -

Good luck tomorrow SFX - are you decided which you'll go for yet ?

And for Sunday -
Debi
Bumply
Ibby

Look forward to hearing all about it...

rhetorician · 21/10/2011 22:27

lots of luck to this weekend's runners; I did bout 6 miles today very slow, keeping HR under 135. But it felt good. Has anyone ever tested (properly) their max heart rate? By most calculations mine should be about 178, but my sense is that it might be a bit higher than that.

Anyway, v. busy and long day. Lots of cooking, visitors etc. DD flaked out. Dp flaked out. Me, about to flake out...

My best bit of the day was when DD came home with her gps and ran the length of the whole house to give me a hug. Pure joy.

Will try and bash out another 4 miles or so tomorrow.

RunningAllDay · 22/10/2011 10:05

I was just going to ask about HRs - I feel a bit clueless on how to use them now I am able to measure them. I assumed the same as you rhet, that max should be around 178 for me; the max HR I have so far measured was 164 during hill intervals. But I don't know how to use HR in training. On my LSRs, I have noticed my HR was 130-140; on a recent tempo run, 145-155.

Anyone have any primers/websites they can suggest on how to use HR info during training? Like, what zones to stay in etc.

Good luck to the racers today and tomorrow - looks like a lovely weekend for it, from this vantage point anyway! Am on my own with kids (again - my DH works away a month at a time) so am limited on run length for the next week), boo.

Hope your weekend goes well peach.

squix · 22/10/2011 10:45

Just a quick 'good luck' to this weekend's racers, wishing you 'fast feet'.

peach - hope everything's going to plan

Did a decent 6 miles this morning - last 2 miles were off road which I haven't done for ages - realised what I'd been missing.

rhetorician · 22/10/2011 11:14

runningallday sounds like you are more or less in the zone - possibly you could be pushing a bit harder, actually. It's not an exact science unless you've actually done a max heart rate test, although the different formulas come out with relatively similar max - but it does vary from individual to individual.

I can run at about 135, but very very slowly, which is a sign that my aerobic fitness is not all that it should be.

this is a useful guide

RunningAllDay · 22/10/2011 11:38

Thanks rhet that's helpful. If I input 178 as max(which I found on some super-scientific website somewhere), it matches what I do naturally; if I input no max, then you're right, I could probably work a bit harder. Which makes sense - I suspect I never work quite as hard as I could! Anyway, it gives me the guidelines I was looking for, so thanks! Enjoy your 4 miles tomorrow.

DrNortherner · 22/10/2011 12:51

Afternoon all you lovely folk Smile

rhet when you aid that dd came home with her gps and ran the whole length of the house I actually thought for ages that your dd has a GPS (aka Garmin) but I now realise you meant grandparents? I was thinking blimey, a 2 year old with a GPS.......Grin

I did a fab 10k yesterday afternoon with my dog, got heckled running past a rural country pub (think farmers with one eye and you're not far off) felt really good, the met SIL at 7.30am this morning and did 8 miles and could have gone on for at least 2 more easily. Gonna start ramping up my mileage.

It would be amazing if I owned my own hotel but sadly I merely work for them, but, I can get mates rates should anyone ever require any accommodation - do please ask. They are UK based plus one in Paris and one in Barcelona. I am off to our hotel in Edinburgh tomorrow with ds and dh. Taking my kit of course and hope to get in a quick 5k each morning before brekkie. Hope you al enjoy the weekend, we are off to an 18th birthday party tonight and will be the token oldies. How times change. I actually still feel 19 myself Grin

tulip shinsplints suck. I have had them twice, very common. Sadly, reduction in mileage is the only thing that gets rid. Make sure you have correct shoes, and ice after each run. Compression helps too, maybe get some socks or shin supports?

DrNortherner · 22/10/2011 12:52

The 10k felt good, not being heckled by one eyed farmers. That would be weird.
