Thanks for all your messages regarding the shin splints.

Had trainers fitted in a proper shop, was given some for over-pro. The only thing that has been different is the increase in miles and a week of hills. Now staying on the flat.

Have booked a sports massage with a therapist who will hopefully give me some tips. Went spinning this am and for the first time ever my leg even hurt then. Am just getting desperate and realise I may actually be addicted to running!

Well done on joining a running club cherry, I have been too nervous to do so yet.

rhetorician · 22/10/2011 14:53

yes, it would be odd if DD had a GPS! the 'length' of the house is about 40 feet max I'd say...

rhetorician · 22/10/2011 15:00

ok, it looks like the heavens will open in approx 45 minutes, so I'd better get my arse out of the door

futurity · 22/10/2011 15:02

Lol...I also thought you meant a Garmin GPS but didn't even think that was weird ...I think I may be running obsessed!

stickylittlefingers · 22/10/2011 15:26

couldn't get on the site last night to with sfx good luck - hope it is going/has gone well!

And all the best to Debi, Bumply and ibby for tomorrow.

Did park run this morning. Perfect conditions, but I was crap - feeling like walking 1.5k in! Not sure what's going on there. Still, that's the great thing about park run - can just have another go next week.

DrNo sounds as if you really have the wind in your sails at the mo. Go you!!

Fanny don't be too hard on yourself - you did clock up 16 miles which is the important thing. It's a marathon not a sprint [geddit?]

Tulip hope the new shoes help out. Very frustrating for you, but do let your poor old shins recover.

rhet if you could get children fitted with a GPS (and a tracking device), then it would be so helpful for when I'm looking after DN. I think you are on to a great product idea there... Hope your arse is out there and enjoying a nice run!

sfxmum · 22/10/2011 16:16

hello quick line will catch properly this evening

just wanted to wish Good Luck to Debi Bumply & Ibby
I hope you enjoy it

peach hope travel and visit is going as well as possible

I had am relieved I managed to finish my race, in truth it was more a test of how to manage my anxiety than a fitness or race readiness test.
I decided to start with the 10K race although I knew there was still a possibility of just going in at 5K as we passed by the finish line

as it was I stayed well at the back of the pack at the start, the first half mile cost me in terms of managing my head but I found my pace, when the 5k approached I dithered as I was under 30min, some people running near me were giving in and I wavered but then I saw dh&dd and resolved to carry on

I think the hesitation took me off my stride and I never recovered the early pace, although I did not feel I was pushing myself and was pretty much able to chat over the last mile. (hmm race much?)
Anyway in the end I was pleased with myself and resolved to push and train much harder and with more purpose for next time

I am very grateful for your support and inspiration Smile

Pawsnclaws · 22/10/2011 16:50

Hello, just to let you know I'll be namechanging soon, but will be easy to spot Smile.

squix · 22/10/2011 16:52

Well done sfx - 10k - great stuff getting your resolve at 5k.

Drno - have a great trip - I'm sure you'll have a great couple of days. Should have no probs getting out for 5k - lots of routes around the city.

Good luck to tomorrows racers Grin

ibbydibby · 22/10/2011 17:35

Well done sfx for going the extra mile (or in your case, the extra 3.1 miles!)

Sticky everyone has crap days - as you say the nice thing about the parkrun is you can do it again next week. I was pleased with my time today - not a PB, but closer to it than I have been in recent weeks. Already thinking about next parkrun, and wondering how to improve...

peach hope journey went well and you got a seat!

Rhet hope you got your arse out of the door, and back in again, before the heavens opened. Nothing like the threat of rain to make you move a bit faster.

Dr No hope you are having good time in Edinburgh.

Gorgeous day here, though prob not for those of you to the north.

Thanks for good wishes for tomorrow's 10k, hoping I will make it but feeling a bit throaty and sniffy at the moment (though DH has helpfully pointed out I felt like that last night too, but still managed to get out this morning.) Think I have a cold lurking. He, and DCs are coming to watch tomorrow, as part of route along seaside in Gt Yarmouth. Then off to my mum's - she has just phoned to tell me she had a fall in garden and neighbour had to call ambulance. Luckily she is ok (fingers crossed) no treatment needed, but a worry as she is on her own, and does more than she should (long story)

Pawsnclaws · 22/10/2011 17:35

Well done sfx somehow I managed to miss your post! I'm glad you pushed on to the 10K, how was The Hill?

rhetorician · 22/10/2011 20:04

yes, there and back without a dousing; just back from pub dinner, abandoned with DD's grandad who is frankly an arse...oh well, what can you do (erm, completely inappropriate and shocking comment about 'proper sex' Shock)?

am hoping to escape with sanity and liver intact - rather fancy a 10 miler tomorrow (how sad is that?)

Pawsnclaws · 22/10/2011 20:10

OMG at proper sex! Are you serious? What, as in it's not proper sex without a penis in the vicinity? (fervently hoping I may have misunderstood ......).

sfxmum · 22/10/2011 20:17

pity the wife

rhetorician · 22/10/2011 20:35

no paws you have understood perfectly...I do pity the wife

Pawsnclaws · 22/10/2011 21:11

Am almost tempted to ask how this conversation came up at lunch - coq au vin anyone?!

stickylittlefingers · 22/10/2011 21:35

I expect it was the baby carrots that put him in mind Wink

Hope you're feeling better tomorrow ibby (and ibby's Mum)

sfx well done on your race. I'm not surprised it was tricky to get your pace back - I find any dithering about which way I'm going to go always slows me right down, even if I don't feel it at the time. Having a choice in the middle of a race would have got me totally Confused. I hope you're patting yourself on the back for taking the harder choice.

rhetorician · 22/10/2011 21:43

yes, sorry, being very distracting - sfx well done on going for the 10k - convo came up at dinner in relation to hotel providing 2 double beds...sigh/ Retreats to delicious beer and almost certain hangover for 10 miler tomorrow. Repeat after me, I will do my 10 miler tomorrow...

peachsmuggler · 22/10/2011 23:29

Hurrah! Well done sfx, on your 10k. I think having the option to turn it into a 5k in the middle is mental torture, so am very impressed with your nerves of steel!!

Ibby, glad your mum's ok, hope she (and you!) didn't get too much of a fright!

paws, are we talking Halloween change? You changed before didn't you, but then changed back...

Rhet Shock at DD's grandad!!! He sounds charming.

DrNo, hope you have a great time in Edinburgh (not many one eyed farmers there), maybe our trains will pass!!

Journey up was good actually. Paid £25 to upgrade to first class and it was worth every flipping penny! Actually probably ate about £25 worth of their free food and drink!!! Doing the same tomorrow. Will be exhausted by the time I get home but very glad I came. Dad's wife was on very good form and looked great. I think the relief of knowing the worst that could happen has happened has made her feel quite positive, for now. She is already organising to clear out stuff from house in next few weeks so my dad doesn't have to once she is gone Sad. Managed to catch up with all 4 of my siblings too which is nice. Must get to sleep now.

Pawsnclaws · 22/10/2011 23:44

peach am so glad you made it safely and in comfort. Really good your dad's wife was feeling positive, sounds like it made a difference that everyone had got together for her and your dad.

No, name change will be a proper transformation - haven't done it for a while but I like to do it every so often. I've been onn for years and years in various guises!

Been out this evening for a shandy or two. Did a nice 10 miles this morning, 11 m/m which is pretty good for me for a medium length run. Off tomorrow for my MIL's 80th birthday - can't wait to hear her latest views on life in general!

DebiTheScot · 23/10/2011 09:34

Good luck to all the racers today. We're on the way to mine. Dh & the boys are coming too, thankfully dh agreed before he realised it's the rugby final today!

I'm crappng myself about it (literally, been twice already this morning) but don't really know why. It's going to be windy, there's going to be a lot of very fast people, I'll still be running round the track while the fast people are cycling on it, there might be planes landing in the middle while we're racing, I might get a puncture or fall off etc etc etc. Nothing to be nervous about Grin

fannybanjo · 23/10/2011 10:16

Good luck everyone who's racing! Another quicky post as I'm on my phone so will catch up on thread later. Smile

FairyBasslet · 23/10/2011 12:14

Hi all. Did the Edinburgh 5k Big Fun Run in the end. Lovely run round Arthur's Seat, beautiful views, very big long hill but most enjoyable. Did it in about 34 minutes which I'm ok with (must acknowledge that I'm never going to be really speedy). Off to my sister's for a much needed shower now.

Hope all other racers had fun today and Bumply, hope you enjoyed the Edinburgh run as much as I did.

DebiTheScot · 23/10/2011 13:56

Done. Oh my goodness it was so hard! Stomach cramps on first run, cross winds and into wind on cycle and very wobbly legs on second run. Very happy with time which I think was 1:59:50.
Will catch up with thread and do better report later. On way home to watch rugby now.

Bumply · 23/10/2011 15:24

Hi fairyb,
I made it in 40 mins (38 mins to the 5k mark according to runkeeper)
Which is a PB for that route.
That hill can be a killer, strangely I felt worse on the downhill run.

I have yet to discover the ability to sprint atthe end. Didn't help that I was tempted to peel off at the 3 km Mark and go home!

I'm glad I wasn't running with the bear costume. Did you see the yak or whatever the horned beasty was supposed to be?

Wheelybug · 23/10/2011 15:32

Well done again Debi - look forward to the report.

Well done too fairy - am thinking that would be a v. hilly 5K if around Arthur's seat ?

Glad things have gone as well as they could in the circumstances Peach. Hope your trip back is ok.

Just been out for 5 miles and my garmin finally packed in. Its been complaining of low memory for ages but finally said full memory and packed in (I have emptied the memory btw so am not being completely dim). So, am a bit panicked at not having pacing for the GSR next week as will go off too fast and collapse by mile 2. So, have persuaded DH that I can order a new one - need to order tonight to have shipped to my MIL as we're off to IoW tomorrow until Friday then at hers before the GSR. As my first run with it will be GSR do you think I'll be able to work it out for it to be useful in time (sorry to those on FB, a double ask of advice....) And the 110 is a good one to go for isn't it ? On Amazon they have a unisex one, a women's one, and a man's one. The unisex one is cheaper, but can't work out of it is bigger.... Argh...
