Hi, sorry for lack of namechecks, just wanted to ask your opinions on something. Just spoke to my dad, as his wife has been diagnosed today with pancreatic cancer and secondary liver cancer, both of which are inoperable. They are obviously devastated, and she is comfortable at home but doesn't yet know how long she has to live, but presumably not long. I'd like to go up to visit (they are in Glasgow, we are in London) but can't leave it too long as am 36 weeks tomorrow) can't fly now but could get train. I think it will be exhausting but would still like to. Best way would be to go on my own at a weekend and leave DD here with DP. The tricky thing is they obviously don't know how long she has left, and we are due to go up at Xmas, but worried in case this is too late. Anyone have experience of travelling late in pregnancy???

stickylittlefingers · 20/10/2011 18:42

peach I'm so sorry. I am a bit concerned about you travelling on your own (I did travel "late" in pregnancy, but not on my own, which obviously made it a lot less stressful).

YeahThatsTheBadger · 20/10/2011 18:45

Oh peach. I am so sorry to hear that. :(
I drove to Ireland with DH and DS(then 21months old) when I was 38weeks. It's about an 8 hour drive. It was fine. I felt ok. Would you consider taking DD with you? She might be a welcome distraction for them. Hope you're ok and get to see them soon.

Have been lurking as have not been running and felt a bit of a fraud joining in with chit chat on a running thread! :)

Wheelybug · 20/10/2011 18:58

Oh peach - how terribly sad. As for travelling, I have no experience on that score.

Were you on time or late with dd1 ?
Is the train straight through from London and could you get help to get to the London station ? How easy is it to get to them the other end ?

I would think that if you get put on the train one end and can easily get to your Dad's the other end and you have every reason not to expect to go into labour then I think you'd probably prefer to go and 'risk it' than stay and risk waiting until Christmas. After all once you're on the train you can snooze and read....

What does your DP think ? and have you mentioned it to your Dad ?

DebiTheScot · 20/10/2011 18:59

Peach your mil sounds amazing!

I did go back last night but didn't have more wine. Good job too as today started badly enough as it was!
Dh usually v good in mornings but today he left me to do all the faffy jobs even tho he knew he wouldn't have to scrape his car but I would. So I was late for work then technician told me I couldn't have some equipment I asked for for period 1. So mad panic trying to think of something else to teach. Then a colleague undermined me in front of a class & I've had to officially complain about her.
Oh and I've lost my voice SadGrin oi ds2 added the grin!!!

Wheelybug · 20/10/2011 18:59

Thanks Squix - I am in Orange too and thinking the same re 'what time did I put down ?' . I'll be the middle aged freak in the bunches (no pink pom poms SFX ???? How about disney princess bobbles ? )

squix · 20/10/2011 19:00

Oh peach sorry to hear your news. No experience of traveling that far when that pregnant - if you are catching the train - sometimes traveling 1st class doesn't work out that much more expensive and you get lots more room - certainly the on the east coast line you get well looked after with cups of tea, cakes, bacon butties in the morning (several glasses of wine too - probably not appropriate in your condition but I enjoyed them). Hope you manage to find a way to make it work.

stickylittlefingers · 20/10/2011 19:07

debi sounds like a crap crap day - have Wine or Brew or enormous bar of chocolate (DP is away, I might be having all three tonight once the DDs are in bed, so you'll be in good company!)

stickylittlefingers · 20/10/2011 19:09

Peach if you do it, deffo go 1st class, and take all relevant notes with you and keep them very accessible (am a bit paranoid because SIL was away from home hospital when she had her first baby, it didn't go at all well).

Pawsnclaws · 20/10/2011 19:32

peach that's so sad - I'm so sorry. Yes, I would definitely go - by train. Make sure you reserve yourself a decent seat, get yourself put safely on the train and picked up in person, and as sticky says take your notes just in case.

My mum was diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer a few years back. Long story, but as it happened it was the fuck up misdiagnosis of the century, she actually had a huge benign growth blocking her bile duct - which would have killed her if her consultant's "do nothing" approach had been followed. At the time of the (wrong) diagnosis though, she was told six weeks. All cases are different, but I think you should prepare yourself for the worst timewise - sorry. Is she being offered any form of treatment or just palliative care?

DebiTheScot · 20/10/2011 21:41

peach, sorry I missed your other post. How crap Sad. I say go, and go by train, 1st class if you can afford it.

rhetorician · 20/10/2011 21:48

peach just a quick post to say I am so so sorry to hear this, and that I think you should definitely go - sooner rather than later. I personally wouldn't take dd with you, just on the very slim chance that something did start off - then your dad and his wife would have a freaked out 3 year old to deal with as well. Or that would be my take on it.

Thanks to those of you enquiring after my well-being - I'm fine, still running, I have gone back to my multi-vits and omega 3/6s as I suspect I am low on iron, which might explain my less than stellar running performance. My aerobic fitness is not all it should be either - on a rough estimate 75% is about 135 bpm on a heart rate monitor - my speeds at that heart rate are piss poor, so I really need to go back to the drawing board and build basic aerobic fitness. It's why I can't sustain speed for very long, even though I can run at reasonably fast speeds. It's a bit crap, but I guess I can use the next 3 months or so to work on this. I've done it before, but got fed up with the slowness of it - but I have reluctantly accepted that I am not going to make any progress unless I sort this.

Other than that, all well - DD's dd and gps arriving tomorrow so a flurry of shopping/cooking/cleaning - she is a bit under the weather somehow too, pale and not quite herself, appetite not great, but nothing specific IYSWIM

apologies to anyone I've missed [hsmile]

futurity · 20/10/2011 21:49

peach sorry to hear your news..tough times ahead it seems Sad I agree with everyone else..go if you feel comfortable to do so and take your notes and make sure you get a lift to and from the station if possible .

I'm sat here recovering from hill spirits at running club. I actually requested we do them as you lot said they would help my speed so I can blame you all Wink. It's not the biggest hill at all but did the job and was a good work out.

Pawsnclaws · 20/10/2011 22:22

Rhet - just to say that I have a tendency to anaemia, and I find when my iron gets very low I tend to get low in spirits too.

Just 3 miles for me today and it was cold - bbrrrrr!

rhetorician · 20/10/2011 22:43

flipping freezing here too - finally have had chance to check out new extended flue pipe for pellet stove (slightly fussy neighbour - although he is right that it was in breach of building regs before Blush) - but so far so good.

Have graduated to 2 layers. Shorts will be off the agenda soon, too, if this keeps up...

Pawsnclaws · 20/10/2011 22:56

Have just ordered myself a fleecy headband/earwarmer - oh my, the excitement!

Hatwoman · 20/10/2011 22:57

peach - sorry to hear your news. I travel on the train quite a lot - and if you avoid rush hour and the weekend (and possibly Fridays too) they are actually often more than half-empty - and, as such, quite relaxing. Take some good reading, gadgets, i-pod etc. take snacks if you'd like something other than crisps or chocolate. Definitely avoid travelling at the weekend - trains tend to be much more crowded, people have lots of luggage all over the place - and trains are often slower. don't be shy to ask people to help with your bags. get a taxi when you arrive if your dad can't pick you up. You can often get a cheap first class ticket at off-peak times too.

Bumply · 20/10/2011 23:15

Wanted to practice Sunday's 5 k but the start us round the other side of arthurs seat. Ended up doing a 3 k jog to the start. Did the run and was then left with a 3 k slow walk in the dark, soaking wet cos it had rained the whole time. In hindsight I should have driven round, but on the plus side I now know I am theoretically capable of a 10k. Also know I need to get a torch or not procrastinated so much that I end up running and walking in the dark. I did the hilly 5k in 42:44 which i think I can beat on Sunday.
I'm now completely knackered

MoshiMoshi · 21/10/2011 04:33

V brief post from San Fran to say so sorry to hear your sad news, peach. check with your GP and then book earlier rather than later. Hope you are keeping well in the meantime.

All well in San Fran except we have had two quakes today with the latest one just this evening when the whole building seemed to wobble rather a lot. Instead of ducking and covering as we are meant, the Moshi family sat around looking at each other open-mouthed before DD3 said "a big giant just moved the house, mummy!" This is going to take some getting used to.

fannybanjo · 21/10/2011 08:58

Brief post from me, been manic this week so apologies for my absence. However I feel you all may be relieved! Grin.

peach very sad news for your dad's wife and the whole family and I hope she is as comfortable as she can be. Oh to find a cure for cancer... Sad re train journey, like everyone said, take notes and make sure you are met off train by family. Hope you aren't too stressed at this stage of your pregnancy.

Hello to everyone else (hard to name check on phone). It's been a weird week on this thread, a lot of sad news.

Moshi well you never do thinks by half measure so not surprised!

About to do a 16 miler... Hmm

ibbydibby · 21/10/2011 09:46

Peach sorry about your news, second what everyone else says- do go, if at all possible, on your own, and armed with mat notes. First class if funds permit! Can DH/DP/lovely MIL/someone help you across London?

Rhet, I went out in shorts in Monday night. Ran Wed morning in capris, but last night caved in and went training in my long tights. Felt a bit of a wuss, especially as 2 of the other ladies, and several blokes, were still in shorts. Was coldddd though.

Futurity hope kitchen work going well. Thanks all for kind words on our building work, it is at least (for now) confined to outside.

Fanny 16 miles! Well done. One way of keeping warm!

futurity · 21/10/2011 10:28

My shorts have been put away now although it doesn't seem quite so cold out there today and I believe it may warm up over the weekend so I might get them out again.

Am going to go swimming later I think in an "adult lanes" session. Am worried it will be full of lots of keen lunch time swimmers but apparently there is a slow lane so I will pop in that one and try and practice what I learnt the other day.

encyclogirl · 21/10/2011 10:29

fanny 16 miles! G'wan ya good thing.

Peach that is awful news about your dads wife. So sorry to hear it. I think you should go too, but absolutely treat yourself to a decent seat. Your poor dad.

Moshi Stay safe!

Rhet Good luck with the visitors. Sounds like a hive of activity at your end.

Went walking with all my oldie neighbours last night. We do this community walk thing with them once a week and 3 of us lead it. Really lovely to walk with them and chat. We managed 4 miles and they kept a decent pace too. Nice change from running and they have all the gossip!

sfxmum · 21/10/2011 10:42

hello all

peach so sorry it is so sad, can't add more than do go soon and make it as comfortable for yourself as possible, see it as time for yourself, quiet reflection.

moshi I heard about it and thought of you, part and parcel of life there, them giants shaking stuff

take care all and happy running

DrNortherner · 21/10/2011 10:45

peachy sad news about your dad's wife. Of course you should go. Let me know if you need accommodation, we have a hotel in Glasgow and I can get you mates rates.
