New thread everyone!

Rest for me today - just six days to go and I've woken with a sore throat .....

OP posts:
sfxmum · 06/10/2011 16:39

welcome strangeways

FairyBasslet · 06/10/2011 16:54

Strangeways - welcome! I'm doing the Shakespeare Half in April. Maybe I'll try the full marathon in 2013! I can only manage to fit running in as I work at home for my and DH's company and even then, it can be a bit hit and miss. Otherwise it's the treadmill with DD2 in the gym creche. After my first half last weekend, DH said 'marathon next then?'. Not yet - need to do a few HMs first and get a bit faster.

On the subject of the Scots in England, I was in M&S the other day and was accosted by a saleswoman trying to get me to take a store card. She was Scottish as well and said everyone she'd spoken to there had been Scottish too and were all too tight careful with their money to take credit Grin There are a huge number of Scots in our area I have to say.

Wheely, I'm totally in awe of that pace. In my dreams...

Now that I'm no longer wincing with each step I take, I'm desperate to get back out running although I do have sores round my ankle where the timing chip rubbed, ouch! Will have to make do with treadmill tomorrow but DH around and not playing golf on Saturday (happens every second blue moon of something) so I'm considering doing my first Parkrun as there's one about 3 miles away. Anyone do Parkruns here?

FairyBasslet · 06/10/2011 16:56

Oh and thanks for adding my race back in Paws!

FairyBasslet · 06/10/2011 16:58

every second blue moon or* something

FairyBasslet · 06/10/2011 16:59

Oh crap - you know what I mean!

ibbydibby · 06/10/2011 17:28

Fairy - once in a blue moon ??

Welcome Strangeways - maybe it would be better to concentrate on buidling up your distance, and think about a marathon in another year or so? You are heading in the right direction by doing a HM plan! Think the thing that motivates me most is to sign up for races - then I have to do the training. You say that your weekends are busy "..with DH's cycling" maybe you can negotiate on this? ie if he is having time to spend on his interest then can you have some too for running? Alternate weekends?

Several of us on the thread do parkruns - they are addictive, IMO. not sure if I will be running this w/e though as I hurt my calf muscle last week so having a bit of a break from running.

Feeling really knackered now, possibly due to extreme (for me) cycle ride yesterday. Can't stop yawning!

FairyBasslet · 06/10/2011 18:20

Ibbydibby - once every second blue moon is what I'm attempting to say - it's such a rare occurrence to be blessed with his presence at the weekend due either to work and/or golf (just so happens his work involves golf though not generally playing it unless hobnobbing and networking!).

DebiTheScot · 06/10/2011 18:35

Haha, there's loads of us exiles on here! Must be because we're hard Grin
We've tried a couple of times to go back but dh was doing a very specialised job & couldn't get anything in Scotland that paid enough. He changed jobs in Jan doing something that should make him more employable in Scotland so we might get back eventually.
We're happy here & have lots of good friends & the extra sunshine is nice & we're v near Heathrow which can be handy. But all our families are in Scotland & sometimes it'd be nice to have the grandparents nearer.

I'm having one of those days where no matter what I do I either feel guilty about not doing my job properly or guilty about not being there for my children as much as I maybe should.

ibbydibby · 06/10/2011 18:51

I see what you mean now, Fairy . Sorry! Blush

Wheelybug · 06/10/2011 19:14

Thanks all. Beginning to think I might be able to do it in 3 weeks.

That running teacherman is amazing ! 21 days of maratgons -wow !

Welcome strangeways - you're in the right place

FairyBasslet · 06/10/2011 19:40

Ibbydibby - I didn't explain myself very well in the first place!

Debi - I know what you mean about not having family close. Would be handy to have grandparents around sometimes and I feel the children miss out by not having them around. That they're missing out on their heritage also sometimes saddens me. I wouldn't want them to grow up exactly where I did as it's a very deprived area, but it has a rich history and I want them to know about it and appreciate it.

rhetorician · 06/10/2011 21:57

absolutely shattered - a day of dd not being at her charming best, plus various other stresses and strains. LSR in the morning at least - won't be able to match wheely's great time, but hopefully will feel a bit more energetic.

there are a lot of exiled scots on here - I'm an exiled English person (aka mongrel with scottish, welsh and french ancestry - ironically enough, very little irish) - I am going to shamelessly plug my friend's blog to you - it's all about scottishness - she is very witty and is just finishing a book. It's here

oh well, my mood was lifted marginally by dd at the zoo today (we were looking at otters playing and she said 'they've got hands and feet, like us') and by her making me go down the slide multiple times. Then it rained and she wet her knickers and it was all downhill from then on. Just had damson crumble and custard though. Best make sure of that LSR tomorrow :o

runnerstipple · 06/10/2011 22:05

Have just managed to catch up on the thread. RL keeps getting in the way, of both MN and running. Have had niggling hip pain for the past 10 days but planning a gentle run tomorrow to see how it feels.

Another one here in awe of Wheely's pace and stamina. Also, in awe of Ibbydibby's self restraint around chocolate Wink.

Hi to Strangeways.

I hadn't heard of parkruns before joining this thread, but having just looked into them I now know why - the nearest one is blooming miles away. Sigh.

runnerstipple · 06/10/2011 22:09

Rhet I know how you feel. DS3 unbeknownst to me took his potty into his brothers' room, proceeded to fill it, and then managed to get pushed off it by one of said brothers (no one is admitting responsibility) knocking it over in the process, leaving me to clean the crap off the carpet. Ho hum.

rhetorician · 06/10/2011 22:12

runnerstipple - well at least he actually used the potty; I think on a scale if fully potty trained is 10 and not trained at all is 0, we are at about 2 1/4. She knows what to do, is starting to get when to do it, but won't actually do it

futurity · 06/10/2011 22:16

Welcome strangeways
Wow at wheelys pace for 11 miles! I would be very happy if I ever ran that fast and found it easy.

Not sure what time I am aiming for Sunday...am currently ignoring the slight sore throat and sniffles I feel coming on ..off to bed I think!

orangehead · 06/10/2011 22:18

Well done on your run Wheeley Smile
Hope yo feeling better soon sfx
No I have never come last but only ever done 3 races but do parkrun most weeks. I was really worried I might come last in the 10k I did, but then I thought well someone has to. But I was fine anyway. But it's the partaking that counts.
Welcome Strangeways
I know what you mean Debi often feel like that. Its so hard to try and balance everything.
How exciting about the babies, forget it was so close. Needless to say I think you all know I am broody. Not holding out much hope for this month felt too wound up [must try and relax next month].
Ds2 has come home upset today people have been calling him gay. I think I have already metioned he has some problems which are being looked into. He is a very affectionate child and loves hugs and kisses. He struggles to pick up on social cues so doesn't seem to get when people don't want his affection. He also struggles to understand it not on to hug and kiss people at school, if he likes them he wants to show them. He is so innocent and naive. Obviously I have chatted to him lots of times about it but it goes over his head. So they are calling him gay and he has come home biting imself again Sad. Sometimes it would be easier if we could wrap them up in cotton wool, obviously would make things worse but it just instinct to want to protect them.

runnerstipple · 06/10/2011 22:19

Here, rhet, have another Milky Way, I have a secret stash in the cupboard under the stairs, but I'll raid it for you. I hate the whole potty training thing, and then the transitioning from potty to loo. And with three boys it doesn't seem to matter how much I scrub the floor/loo there's always a lingering wee smell in the loo. They just always seem to miss, especially when the two oldest are playing at wee wars, pretending that the stream is a lightsabre. I've just found some stickers that you put in the loo for them to aim at (they change colour when the wee hits it) so I'm going to try them to see if it improves matters.

A LSR tomorrow might just help me to hold it together see the funny side.

orangehead · 06/10/2011 22:23

oh damson crumble and custard sounds delicious.
futurity hopeit turns out to be nothing, get some early nights and vitamin c and echinacea.
runnerstipple wooden flooring is the way to go

rhetorician · 06/10/2011 22:28

orange - how old is your DS2? does the school have a policy on bullying? and does it include 'gay'? some of the schools here now have specific policies on this; the poor love. And poor you.

runnerstipple when we found out we were having another girl more than one person mentioned the upside that at least girls wee in the toilet (once they learn how to grrrr)

YeahThatsTheBadger · 06/10/2011 22:30

Wow. You lot talk. A lot!

Not much running here unfortunately-DH has been out or I've been painting the sitting room. And DH is away to Poitiers tomorrow with his band for 4 days, but I plan on visiting my folks and will go out for a run while they're minding the dc.

Ooh and got my official chip time and it's 1hr 05m 23s which is 1.5mins faster than I thought. Grin

Welcome strangeways

On the subject of Scotland, I have a lot of family in there-mainly Glasgow and Johnston but haven't been up to visit for years. I spend most of my holidays in Ireland-my favourite place in the world! (where's encyclo gone?)

Happy running filled weekend!

rhetorician · 06/10/2011 22:31

yes, where is encyclo?

Pawsnclaws · 06/10/2011 22:37

orange ds1 has also had lots of issues with being called gay, he's 8. Will post in full tomorrow as I'm about to turn in, but suffice it to say I was very unimpressed with the way the school handled it. Maybe we can swap notes.

OP posts:
orangehead · 06/10/2011 22:38

He 8, yes school does have policy but sure of the details of it.
That a good time badger well done.

orangehead · 06/10/2011 22:40

Thanks Paws, yes let us know what the school did. Im going to have a chat tomorrow.
