New thread everyone!

Rest for me today - just six days to go and I've woken with a sore throat .....

OP posts:
backwardpossom · 05/10/2011 23:19

I had a little cry when my friend sent me a photo of her brand new baby this morning. Both our sons are the same age, so her having a little girl just got to me a little!

rhetorician · 05/10/2011 23:44

DD was 5 days late (well 3 by our dates) and arrived in about 4.5 hours all told...DP thinks this one won't be late and will probably be about 2 hours. Yikes. Oh and then we have to look after the little bugger :o

ibbydibby · 06/10/2011 10:01

Eek can't keep up.

Firstly Moshi welll done for reaching a decision, I always feel better once a decision has been reached, otherwise it just hangs over you.

Re baby due dates - DS1 was induced 3 weeks early (there were indications that he had stopped growing), so when I reached a similar stage with DS2 it was a bit of shock when I realised he was not going to be born at 37 weeks. He was born about 10 days early though, arrived about 2.5 hours after we arrived in hospital. We got there at 2.30am, shown into delivery suite with promise that midwife would be along "in a minute". I just wanted to lie down on the bed, but did not want to take my shoes off as this would look very presumptious (ie in the sense it would look like I was assuming I was staying) so I didn't take my shoes off, or lie down (weird what goes through you head at these times!). When the midwife eventually turned up, discovered I was 8cm and almost ready to go.

(Sorry have digressed somewhat)

All this talk of babies though - went to secondary school open evening with DS2 last night, as he is currently in Y6. DS1 currently Y10. Where have my babies gone?

Still no running for me as giving my calf a rest. However decided to go for a cycle ride yesterday...decided I wanted to go to garden centre 20 miles away, and if I cycled there, I could spend more money! Thing is though, I ended up having lunch (hot meal) in the restaurant so not much money saved, plus the moneythat I spend on bulbs...Was great having a Garmin though as could keep an eye on my progress. Journey there was a bit of a killer as riding into the wind, in fact it took about 10 minutes to get out of my village, and I almost gave up and went home. Journey there took 2hrs 20 (with several stops to check map), journey home 1hr 40. So felt pleased with my efforts as don't cycle on regular basis. Major arse-ache now though.

Fanny re charity place for marathon- have you though of asking smaller local charities? I think all charities are charged the same price for a marathon place (in region of £300 I thought, but maybe more) but then it is up to them how much they say a runner has to raise. Think the bigger the charity the more money they expect you to raise. On the other hand, raising the money is not as hard as you may think. I raised over £1000 for Cancer Relief - I just had a normal, ballot place not a charity place and so no obligation. I think people are really keen to sponsor those running a marathon. I was certainly sponsored by people I had never met (eg a friend of my mum's). Friends who have had charity places have raised the money by doing coffee mornings, quiz night etc.

sfxmum · 06/10/2011 10:18

while wishing you all happy and healthy pregnancies and safe deliveries

moshi so now there is plan that will keep you busy for a while eek! glad a decision has been made, wishing you all the very best for the big move. Make sure you don't put too much pressure on yourself and get practical home help from the start.

Amused at the non runners who do marathon Grin you are all fantastic

As I will probably drink tonight, I shall go for a little run today, definite change in the weather here but still pleasant

FairyBasslet · 06/10/2011 10:25

Ah babies, babies. I'm sooo broody but DH has refused to have another one. So running will just have to become my baby replacement. Brother in law and his wife are due any day now with their first so I can't wait to see my new niece/nephew. We're heading up to Scotland (DH and I are both Scots down south) during half term to see the new wee bundle. Even our cleaner's gf is having a baby FGS (actually, probably right now as she was going in for a section this morning!).

Well done Moshi on the decision. Sounds like you're getting excited. Have you seen the feature in this month's Runners World about the SF Marathon?

My race has dropped off the schedule as well but on iPhone (RIP Steve Jobs Sad) so will do the cutting and pasting later. Have a good day all.

Pawsnclaws · 06/10/2011 11:03

Fairy give me the date/name and I can add it for you!

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 06/10/2011 12:00

shit shitty shit shitty shit. Too much to do. Confused

DebiTheScot · 06/10/2011 12:04

Fairy where are you from and where do you live and how long have you been here? Dh and I are Scots in England too. I'm from Dundee, he's from Aberdeenshire and we live in Hampshire. Been here 8 years now.
(sure noone cares but never mind)

ibbydibby · 06/10/2011 12:12

Debi I care... DH born in Dundee, but moved to Midlands aged 2. So hasn't really retained his Scottishness, but just has a v obviously Scottish name (daren't post it here!). V weird accent though - I struggled to work out where he was from when we first met.

Forgot to say that following yesterday's epic bike ride, DH bought me large bar of Cadbury's dairy milk. Felt v chuffed as he doesn't often do surprises/offerings like this. Treated myself to 4 squares this morning. Bliss.

FairyBasslet · 06/10/2011 12:58

Debi - I'm from Fife, DH from a wee village outside Edinburgh. DH moved down about 15 years ago and I followed 9 months later once I got a job. Can't believe we've been here that long. DH sometimes makes noises about moving back to Scotland but I'm not so keen (though occasionally I just think 'right, let's do it' - the feeling soon goes though Grin. I couldn't be doing with the weather up there for one thing.
I think our relatives think it's strange to hear our children with their English accents (of course we don't really notice). DS (8) is a real Scotsman though - wears his Scotland rugby shirt with pride! DD1 (5) is not so convinced but we're working on brainwashing her that Grin

Paws - in case you manage it before me, it's the Shakespeare Half Marathon on 29/4/12.

Hatwoman · 06/10/2011 13:13

I hadn't realised we had two babies so very close to putting in an appearance. very exciting.

did 6 miles this morning - with a few fartleks thrown in - part of my mission to get faster. had to take no fewer than four detours because of cows. they were blumen everywhere today. I've actually got brave and I'll walk/run through a field with them in now but this morning they were right across gateways. four times ffs! including, in one case the same cows, who had kindly moved from one gateway to another while I was doing a bit of a loop. having said that one lot of calves were exceptionally cute.

dh has scottish roots - and a ridiculously scottish name. apparently he's a MacDonald. (not his name - but his name is a family name that was part of the bigger clan). but he's very english

sfxmum · 06/10/2011 13:44

Scottish roots, dh was born in Edinburgh, mother Scottish, father Irish with Glasgow roots, none have a Scottish accent it was pushed out of them at school ,shame really, but dh grew up in Singapore and England, very Scottish name. Grin
I love London and there are very few places I would exchange for it, he sometimes feels like we should be living in some small village but I am having none of it, not unless we win the lottery

question have any of you ever come last in races? I am thinking of calling in at the doctor and check my iron levels, so tired, was looking at my logs from the past couple of years and the last 6months are awful, this morning was just soooo sluggish

oh well onwards and forwards, at least I got my arse out of the door

sfxmum · 06/10/2011 13:47

baby calves Smile
I hear the rutting deer are attacking folk at the parks around here, esp. Bushy Park Shock

peachsmuggler · 06/10/2011 14:12

Oooh Scottish people exiled in England! I've been here for 10 years, DP, 11 and he is taking A LOT of persuading to go back. I think we will one day, but worried it will be when the benefits will be less. I am really missing all my nieces and nephews growing up and my family are missing seeing DD grow up. It seems crazy to me for us to be in London when we have this massive, lovely family, on both sides, in Scotland but DP doesn't agree. Sigh. Have suggested we should have some counselling or somethng so I don't end hating him for it, but he is not too keen. Poo.

sfx, have never come last, but then the races I've done have been pretty big ones.

N4NNY · 06/10/2011 14:19

sfxmum I came last in a 10k in June and am often last at parkrun I don't mind really think I'm gonna make it my mission to be last all the time you get lots of cheers and let's face it I'll never be first :)

Wheelybug · 06/10/2011 14:26

I was only thinking the other day that there are an awful (in the nicest way !) lot of Scottish people on this thread. Is it because Scottish people are harder than southern softies ?? I have absolutely no scottishness in me, and neither has DH. In fact, DH is probably completely English.. well Bristolian... I have lots of other bits in me (welsh father, mother mostlyEnglish but a bit of Irish and a bit of German). I am as southern softie as they come, as from brighton. That's probably why I can't do hills. Not enough Irn Bru.

However... drum roll please..... I did manage almost 11 YES 11 miles this morning (10.9) in 1 hr 37. It felt like a nice steady pace, at no point did I feel I was pushing it - I felt like I could keep on running at that pace even at the end. It was perfect conditions, cool but sunny. A HUGE confidence boost for me !!! Although because I'd done a bit more than the planned 10 miles I then had 5mins to shower and get out and pick up dd2.

SFX - sorry you're feeling sluggish, I'm sure you won't come last . I think you've said before you've had iron issues previously ?? So probably best to get it checked out.

Wheelybug · 06/10/2011 14:27

And remember, even if you do come last - you've done better than everyone else sitting at home on the sofa (I think I've messed that quote up a bit but you get the gist !!).

DrNortherner · 06/10/2011 14:42

Wow wheely well done you! That's a great distance.

I am resting my injured leg till my long run on Sat. I never felt a twinge after 5.5miles of tough intervals on Tues, then yesterday I didn't run and went to the pub with the girls, got home and my leg was throbbing all fricking night. Whats all that about then?

Wonder if my compression socks compressed the paain into the next fucking 24 hours Hmm

Pawsnclaws · 06/10/2011 14:53

Goodness, well done wheely - what a good pace, too. And you weren't even pushing it!

sfx have never come last, but the way I feel at the moment there's every chance I'm going to struggle a bit on Sunday. Apparently Chester is quite strict about the 6 hour time limit, and frankly if I'm feeling off and throw in a bit of walking my time may not even get recorded! But - I do want to take part, and even if I'm one step ahead of the sweeper bus I don't really care. I would just be gutted not to even start, or not to finish at all.

I have major iron issues, I think I said before I'm on Feroglobin which helps plus multivits and Berocca. I get drained by my dreadful periods, and I always know when it's low as I get out of breath and palpitations. In desperation this month I've actually eaten quite a bit of red meat - which I hadn't done in 20 years. I don't like meat at all, but I struggle otherwise on a veggie diet.

StrangewaysHereICome · 06/10/2011 15:00

Hello lovely fit ladies, can I join you? I'm just getting my fitness back now DS is nearly 7 months and I am thinking it might be time to do some races. I am rather obsessed with running but no one in RL is remotely interested!

I did a lovely, if a bit windy, 6 miler this morning pushing the boy along. Good resistance training pushing the buggy into the wind Grin.

I need a plan though. Currently I am nearly at the end of Paula's 10k plan and will start on the half marathon one next, but no races lined up. Am seriously toying with the idea of the Shakespeare marathon in April but I am not sure how to fit the training in as I can't realistically expect DS to spend hours in the buggy for the long runs. Our weekends are quite busy with DH's cycling and fitting in our two DDs social lives Wink. I am probably bonkers to consider it. So I thought I would do the half plan and see how it goes and decide before Christmas. If all the places are gone then so be it.

well done Wheely, that's a fabulous distance in a great time. I hope your leg is better soon DrN nothing like a niggle to drive you bonkers Confused.

MoshiMoshi · 06/10/2011 16:36

Welcome strangeways!

sfxmum · 06/10/2011 16:38

thank you everyone it might be me and the 90 year old which I hope will enter and give me a push to the finish Grin

Wheely very good effort, it was quite windy today out there

dd' School laid out the red carpet and a big comfy chair for Mad running teacher man, the children were very excited cheering him in welcome to the school, and all scoffed a mountain of cakes afterwards
He had to walk as the poor guy is injured he had a couple of mum keeping him company over the 26 miles
