a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

wow masters - that sounds like quite an experience and well done - you did amazingly, you really did. And hitching a ride in a cessna on the way home - you rock !!

Well after my happy run on sunday, I was back on the treadmill today - 10K in a not-very-airconditioned gym with 4 x 1k at 12.5 kph. Hard. and think I might be heading for the injury bench. My shin is sore too - its been vaguely twinging for a bit but today is quite sore. Gutted, but crossing fingers.

squix · 28/06/2011 23:00

themasterandmargaritas - wow, just wow. What an experience.

Sorry to hear about all the injuries - it's so frustrating isn't it.

I'm having 3 rest days in a row due to work and travelling but am going down to stay with my dad for a few days tomorrow so I am expecting a few hard runs with him. Looking forward to the days off work too, been busy and got a few busy weeks coming up.

pawsnclaws · 29/06/2011 12:20

4 miles slow at the gym today. I've got a longer run planned for tomorrow so thought I'd just keep things ticking over - would prefer to be outside, but sadly today I needed the creche for ds3.

Very exciting text from DH while I was on the treadmill ..... our Foo Fighters tickets for Sunday have finally arrived. I'm way beyond excited Smile.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 29/06/2011 13:15

I'm sure they will be great paws!

I am feeling knackered today - not sure why. Forgot to take my citalopram yesterday though Blush. Was planning a treadmill speed session tonight but Monday evenings club run turned into a 7+ miles tempo run so I think I should maybe take it easy.

Well done to those of you managing to keep running in the heatwave down south. Our temps have climbed up to about 22 deg now which is quite hot enough for me.

hey science, I'm no expert but shouldn't you be taking it easy the week before a half marathon anyway? If the race is on Saturday, that's only two rest days. I'd say do nothing, in hopes of building up some energy stores.

5 miles today at race pace (hopefully!), felt OK. Tomorrow some fartlek, then 8 miles on Saturday or Sunday, depending on hangover level after friends for dinner on Fri night.

DebiTheScot · 29/06/2011 22:18

I'm also not an expert but would say rest too science. Hope you're ok on Saturday.

I did a swim and my 30 day shred dvd tonight after a manic day at work and horrible dentist appointment. Will try a run tomorrow before going to Take That. I'm off work skiving striking tomorrow.

N4NNY · 29/06/2011 23:24

Been to running group tonight and we were doing stride work which involved lots of knee lifts heel kick and what I can only describe of over the top skipping. We have been advice to practice after one of our runs this week. Now doing these with a group of others was ok but I'm going to look a complete loon skipping by myself along the downs of Bristol

cestlavie · 30/06/2011 06:35

Don't think there are any hard and fast answers science. A lot of training programmes for HM have a light run a couple of days beforehand, say 2-3 miles just to turn the legs over and stretch them out. That being said I think you need to listen to your own body as you're trained up by now and the last run won't make any difference. Personally, from what you've said, I'd skip it - maybe have a long stretching session instead or a massage (if you can!) as an aside, I didn't run for a week before my race last week cos of a boggle and am sure legs felt better for it on the day.

N4NNY love that image Grin. This month's edition of RW has a similar exercise session to be done whilst out running, ie. bounding along like a kangaroo on a pogo stick, which I'd thought might be best left off the streets of London.

DW is off to see Take That next week Debi. Excitement levels in our house are already reaching near critical point!

notyummy · 30/06/2011 08:10

Science - I would rest if I were you.

N4nny - I do lots of that sort of stuff in the Shred (jumping lunges, heel kicks etc). Might be worth thinking about to supplement your running - has def strengthened my legs (as well as abs and upper body!)

Did 7 miles yesterday and wasnt feeling the love tbh. Heavy, heavy legs. Planning to shred tonight, and then a 3/4 miler tomorrow with a pilates session afterwards.

Wheelybug · 30/06/2011 13:25

Another vote for resting here science - you've done all the hardwork - better to be rested and prepared that way I would say. Good luck ! look forward to the race report.

Shin splint niggle seems to be keeping at bay - after pain on Tues night after a hard treadmill session it was ok yesterday and I have just done 5 miles on the treadmill but kept it slow and steady, had a slight twinge as I got up to my faster pace so cut back. Won't have time this weekend to do too long a run and one of my gym sessions will have to be shorter than normal next week so fingers crossed a slight rest will help. Need to be able to do RFL next saturday if only to support my mum.

Have great visions of everyone hopping and skipping out and about now Grin.

MoshiMoshi · 30/06/2011 13:48

Agree with everyone that you should rest sciencebint - your legs are telling you to take a break and you will feel refreshed for your HM!

wheely pleased the shin pain is lessening but keep it steady and avoid fast reps/long runs for now. Keeping on the treadmill will also help absorb impact and give them a rest while continuing to run a bit. It is a fine art of balancing the need to accustom your body to the impact of running on tarmac with injuring it from too much hard impact too soon for it to cope with without breaking down. One I still strive to find!

Yesterday's 11M was so hard for some reason I ended up bailing at 8M which is something I never do! Today I went on the G Trainer and did 9M with 4 at HM pace which felt much better. HM pace worked out around 6:40m/m. But need to translate that to the tarmac to be really sure. Still early days so happy enough with it for now.

cest - am joining MrsCest at Wembley!

DrNortherner · 30/06/2011 14:39

Think I am one of the few females NOT seesing the Take That boys Still, I saw them first time round at Whitley Bay Ice Rink when I were just a teen.....

I am doing a 10 miler tomorrow, then collecting ds from school early as we are off to Manchester to stay with a friend of mine and her son. Off to see Transformers 3 which has had shocking reviews!

Quenelle · 30/06/2011 16:09

I'm not seeing TT either, and never have. I did see East 17 once when I was too old in my 20s.

paws I saw FF at Earls Court a few years ago. They were extremely good.

Did another 20 minuter at lunchtime. It was really tough. Any chance that PMT makes you lethargic?

Wheelybug · 30/06/2011 16:24

oh it definitely does quenelle IME.

I am not going to TT either. I am going to Pulp at the wireless festival on Sunday though (not sure if that makes me more cool or significantly less cool...). That was more my thing way back when....

Thanks Moshi - I'm going to try really hard to be sensible I promise. Glad your run went well today after yesterday's.

sfxmum · 30/06/2011 17:08

hello

sorry to hear about injuries always awful, but best to take a rest and find alternatives to keep active, it will pass

out with dd today dues to strike, meeting new teacher tomorrow then hopefully 5-6 miles, I need it

I'm afraid Take That and assorted boy band pop completely bypassed me tastes slightly different
we will be off to CampBestival at the end of July again not exactly all my kind but keeps the child entertained, having said that she is a Nick Cave and Biffy & Vaselines fan, so we are not going too wrong thereGrin HSM shall remain discreet pleasure

Themasterandmargaritas · 30/06/2011 18:09

Hello, we are in last week of school chaos, concerts, art expos, torrential thunderstorms, no power the works. So I shall catch up properly later. I just wanted to ask, would I be rather loony in doing an impromptu half marathon down the road next weekend? No pressure, no camping, no lions and tarmac Smile

MoshiMoshi · 30/06/2011 20:25

master - sounds perfect. No build up, no expectation, no pressure! Go for it. Smile

June2009 · 30/06/2011 20:44

heya, wow not been on for a few days and almost 950 messages already!
(are we having "I run, I do running I'm a runner" in the title? I liked it too).

I'm going on holiday Sunday and will most certainly come back to a new thread! (though there's free wireless everywhere in the resort so hopefully I'll get to catch up).

My trainer is telling me to rest on my holiday and not run, just swimming (1/2 hour everyday). I'm going to try and do a long run tomorrow as I couldn't do it yesterday, according to my plan it should be 13k minimum, probably on the treadmill, I migth actually get some headphones and watch the televisions! (never done that before!).

Hope veryone is good, I read the half marathon report in Kenya, it sounds amazing :D
driving hope you had a good time in France, did your garmin work well there too? :D

dinner time, baby still not sleeping and luggage not packed argh.

ThatVikRinA22 · 30/06/2011 20:50

hi guys....well i have at least found out what the problem is. i went to see a sport therapist today. I have done my achilles.....very swollen. cant remember the proper name for it but not to worry, he treated it with heat and then massage and ice but i cant run for AT LEAST a fortnight, so am quite fed up.

means i wont be able to do my fitness test for work, but i can still cycle, use a cross trainer and do upper body weights etc....

he also says i have a very pronounced problem with my ankles, expecially the right one which is where my problem is....says i should be using insoles in my work boots etc...and to wear my new trainers at home so i can A) pad them in and B) stop my ankle rolling in.....

Sad
pawsnclaws · 30/06/2011 21:00

I would love to see Pulp. Sounds wonderful and just my era!

I saw TT a couple of years back and they were just amazing. Even DH who is more ACDC/Metallica said it was fab. Also saw Robbie about 10 years ago, but funny enough I just didn't want to see the reformed TT. DH is going next Weds on a corporate do without me!

Would love to see Kasabian as DH was blown away by them last year. Have just started to get to the stage of taking the boys to a few things though sadly they like the cheesy stuff like JLS - will I ever live that one down?!

ThatVikRinA22 · 30/06/2011 21:03

....and you can definitely keep take that! Grin

saw pulp in Newcastle....you will enjoy!

EmmaBemma · 30/06/2011 21:42

Vicar you might be able to get proper orthotics for your feet on the NHS, could you go to your GP and ask? I am horribly flat footed, and was advised to do just that by my mum's orthopaedic surgeon friend, who seemed to think it was possible. I don't wear any insoles as my feet somehow don't give me any trouble despite both collapsing inwards.

A fortnight isn't all that long... not as long as it could've been. You'll be back in the swing of things before you know it.

Re: Pulp - Different Class was the first CD album I ever bought! I was 17 when it came out, and it was that classic experience of feeling as if all the songs were meant for me, but especially Misshapes, Underwear and Es and Whizz.

(the first cassette album I ever owned was Queen: The Miracle)

master: DO IT!

fartlek this morning. Managed nearly two miles, but probably spent more time recovering than sprinting. But, better than last time: I feel I am improving.

Also, new capri running bottoms and vest arrived today, excitingly! The bottoms looked tiny at first, but they do, just, fit. Feel very professional with whole outfit on.

ThatVikRinA22 · 30/06/2011 22:33

thanks, i know, it could be worse. im going to get in touch with occupational health and see if they can help....if not ill see gp.

ill have to take it easy and build the running up slowly again i think so as to avoid problems.

i just bought a whole new running outfit....not had chance to use it yet but the difference it made to how i felt was huge! waiting to give it a whirl!

cestlavie · 30/06/2011 22:34

master that sounds fantastic. Go for it!

Sounds like Pulp were amazing at Glastonbury, with Disco 2000 as an encore. I remember hearing that at uni and thinking "now that's a long time away...". mental note, must add Different Class to iPhone!
