a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

June what a brilliant time! well done. Have just been out for work thing, but delicious Thai food, yum. 5 miler for me in the morning - the 2 glasses of wine seem to have killed the pain in my shoulder, so maybe I will get a full night's sleep!

backwardpossom · 02/06/2011 01:31

Well done June!

Am at my brother's flat in Stirling hence no big updates, but wanted to say Moshi, am thinking of you x

TheChewyToffeeMum · 02/06/2011 07:43

Well Done June! So what next?Grin

I did some 1K intervals on the treadmill last night. Was sweating so much it was stinging my eyes. Am I going to have to wear a fetching 80's style sweatband next time?

DrNortherner · 02/06/2011 07:46

Well done June! Interesting way of running 10k.....not sure I'd enjoy the multiple circuits tbh, although I guess it breaks it down into chunks so may encourage you to go faster.....fab time though Grin

Just 3 miles for me this evening. Got to get work out the way first and have a shite day ahead with a project to do that I know will be difficult so I am not looking forward to going!

robino · 02/06/2011 08:13

markimg my place as a complete fake. The DH working away/ no childcare/three DCs and dog/ BFing 14 wk old/ DH ill the last 2 weekends combo has lead to no running lately. But the intention is there.

drivingmisscrazy · 02/06/2011 08:28

good intentions are the way to start robino and I can see that your set-up would make it very difficult to find the time to run...you'll get there though

MoshiMoshi · 02/06/2011 09:05

Well done, June! Circuits is a good way of trying to run even paced splits which I quite like.

MoshiMoshi · 02/06/2011 09:06

robino - I think Garfield the car famously said exercise is 80% mental. Grin

MoshiMoshi · 02/06/2011 09:06

THE CAT! not car.

drivingmisscrazy · 02/06/2011 10:52

I love my Garmin! but it's telling me that I'm a slow-coach; that can't be right, surely Hmm? probably the effects of slightly more wine than I realised i'd drunk...you know the way

morning of working at home and then an hour or two doing jobs chasing dd around at the allotment

hope running is good today, and that the taperers aren't getting too antsy

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 02/06/2011 11:30

Just done an hour of conditioning work at Bootcamp feeling much better for having done it. Think I will go again tomorrow and continue on a daily basis if I can fit it in until I get my running underway again. Ankle definitely wobbly and not to be run on properly just yet.

Happy running everyone.

drivingmisscrazy · 02/06/2011 11:53

moshi you are right to let the ankle heal - I just turned mine over about 4 years ago and didn't rest it for long enough, and there's still a bit of weakness there. Initially it caused me loads of achilles problems. But at least you've found some other outlet for the time being.

squix · 02/06/2011 13:08

Hello new thread.

June2009 well done - that's brilliant - what a great time - and you loved it too - even better.

TheChewyToffeeMum - Why not go full 80's kit - sweatband, neon legwarmers, Jane Fonda Hairstyle......Grin

Driving very pleased your Garmin is living up to expectations and thanks for the new thread.

Moshi - do hope your ankle heals soon, must be very frustrating. Hope the interview goes well this evening.

Did a tempo run yesterday before work - 8 mins jog - 25 mins run - 7 mins jog (with a wee sprint down hill at the end). Was nice being out first thing and set me up for a tough day at work - but boy do I find mornings harder.

Hmm - am not convinced about not the bottom group for military fitness - but will go along and see how it goes. Will either go Saturday morning or Monday evening - depends on the weather and if the tickle at the back of my throat turns into a full blown cold. Weather is looking promising - I am now finally out of long sleeves and running in a T Shirt.

June2009 · 02/06/2011 13:28

drno I really liked that it was circuits because that is how I have been training (laps of 1k around my gym), I also liked that the lap was a little bit longer as then I "only" had to do 8 laps instead of 10 iyswim.
I think because of the location it just had to be done this way as they had to close off the minimum amount of road, it's very busy there and has to be functional. Also explains why it was done after 6pm, less busy then.

moshi things do get on top of you from time to time. I can totally relate to the grief thing and what driving said. I remember when my grandad passed away it brought all the repressed feelings back from when my mum died. It is good that your dh knows how you feel, don't worry if doesn't "react" to it, some people just don't know what to do with other people's emotions, it doesn't mean they don't care. They just need to be told what to do to help. (sometimes just listening is enough.) You're not letting anyone down by sharing your feelings.
I have always been the strong and calm person too, it is hard keeping it together at all times 24/7. I think it would be less trying for you if you could do some running right now because of where it takes you mentally, but it could be a blessing in disguise to let you deal with the feelings from your dad's passing. I'm sorry to hear about your mum, my mum had cancer too and I just felt powerless and overwhelmed.

Can you do another kind of training in the meantime? to take your mind off things and regain a bit of control?

cestlavie · 02/06/2011 15:49

Hello all. Like the new thread title drivingmiss - very apposite!

Hope your ankle gets better soon Moshi. On top of everything else, not being able to have the release of running must make it that bit worse. Glad to hear you made it to Bootcamp though... least you still get the endorphin buzz!

Well done on the 10K time June - great time and sounds like it was a pretty steady, even pace judging by the splits. If you're looking for running shops in East London I think there is/ was a Runners Need near Liverpool Street station so might be worth going there?

Squix I really love morning runs. It's that bit quieter, the world is just waking up and you're not weary from a long day at work. Plus there is something very nice about starting the working day having done all your exercise rather than having to try and find time at the back end.

Am going to try and vaguely get back on schedule again tomorrow with a bit longer (11+ mile) run. Really looking forward to it and really need it... plus I am tragically excited about my first long run in my newish running shoes, only a month old. Have been an Asics loyalist since I started running but swapped to Brooks about 4 weeks ago and I LOVE THEM! They're so much lighter and flexible despite being the same level of cushioning. Is this really sad? Is it? If the answer on this thread is yes, then god knows what the answer would be in the real (non-running) world!

Themasterandmargaritas · 02/06/2011 16:57

Wow June that is great news, well done. Smile I do love it when people are around cheering you on. Not that I should expect much of that in the middle of a game park...

C'estlavie, I could talk about shoes all day and night. Any kind of shoes mind, it doesn't have to be running shoes. Wink.

Moshi, go easy on yourself. Your life is full, full, full. You are bound to have days when you feel low, thinking about your dad, worrying about mum, the dc etc. If you can't run yet, can you swim? I hope the housekeeper works out, I would be totally lost without our ayah, she is a godsend. Smile

I am off tomorrow pm to a national park, where running is strictly not allowed as there are so many elephants around. So no long run for me this week, I may get a chance for a short run when we get back on Sunday.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 02/06/2011 16:58

squix nice! I think I might give the thong leotard over lycra shorts look a miss though. I wonder if my mum still has her Hi-Tec silver shadows?

A bit hot here today. I think I will have rest day as I definitely not drunk enough fluids so far today.

ibbydibby · 02/06/2011 17:26

Sorry having joined in earlier this week have not been leeping up very well. Off to running club tonight, not v keen as have sore throat, but as DH says I often have a sore throat before going......

ChewyToffee your mention of thong leotard reminded me of something. There is a bloke (prob late 50s) at the club who always wears skimpy tight shorts. They are tight. Whichever ones he wears (amazing what observations you make when runnig behind someone). Anyway had training afternoon at beach on bank hol sunday, and at the end of trainng a few brave runners ran into the sea, in their running kit. Well some of the braver blokes took t-shirts off. "Tight-short man" however wore the skimpiest most revealing pair of lime green trunks ever. They were cut like the highest high-leg knickers, and only covered half his bum. He just suddenly appeared and rushed past us into the sea. Up until this point I had no idea that other club runners had also noticed his fondness for tight garments - they obviosuly had judging by the comments. I had assumed he was blissfully unaware of shorts looking too tight, but the swimming trunks were so revealing I am beginning to wonder.....Had been telling DH about this, and he suggested he does it "for kicks" ie bit of an exhibitionist. Anyone ever come across anyone like this? (Disclaimer: I am a bit naive!)

Before I cause any offence, might I add that all the other blokes at the club wear just normal regular shorts.

TheChewyToffeeMum · 02/06/2011 17:37

I don't know about exhibitionist runners but I do see a (late 50's?) man running in a poorly disguised toupee; he must feel really hot under there.

And, a few weeks ago I saw a old man wearing some skimpy trunks at the swimming pool, then he turned around and I realised they were on back to front!

DrNortherner · 02/06/2011 17:58

Oh we have a famous 'naked' runner in Harrogate. Well, nearly naked, he wear tiny shorts and is always shirtless, even in winter. He grunts and groans and sweats. Think he is a little bit of a nutter.....

drivingmisscrazy · 02/06/2011 18:36

we also have a naked runner in Dublin - rain, shine, winter, summer; late 20s, leathery, with a HUGE moustache. He always runs in the road Shock

I'm glad I got out early today, as it has suddenly turned into summer!

MandM too many elephants is a pretty novel excuse for not running! I run near the zoo and quite regularly see tigers and wolves, not to mention penguins, but not exactly big game...

ps we went to Africa in 2006 and didn't see a single effing lion (well, we saw some ears in the long grass)...did see lots of other interesting things but still

OP posts:
sfxmum · 02/06/2011 19:14

Grin at the exhibitionist types

people watching is a favourite sport, you get all types, some inspiring, some amusing, some ludicrous some downright odd, I regularly meet a woman who runs in a fashion I call 'tampon advert' swishy hair aswishing in exaggerated fashion, makes me giggle, and I am occasionally alarmed by the motivational loud talker 'push it push you can you can' HmmGrin
I am not sure he knows how loudly he speaks
I also meet a lot of women (occasionally men) with personal trainers

june great time sounds like you really enjoyed it.

drivingmisscrazy · 02/06/2011 19:19

sorry, that should have said late 50s!

Went for a little 3 miler and felt niggles everywhere - left for, right shit, right calf......I hope it is my imagination running riot. Dh's race number and chip have arrived but mine hasn't and we registered at the same time Hmm Worried now I am not really registered and I made a mistake somewhere......Someone slap me please?!
