a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

drno - sounds like it was tough - but I am sure the cakes were worth it,

4 miles for me early this morning - my early morning runs are usually about 1 min per mile slower than later on in the morning - so today was good as I was only about 30 secs a mile slower. Was damp and miserable though - it has been all day - tiny bit of blue sky now though - I might get to finally run in short sleeves tomorrow Grin

It's a big birthday for me tomorrow - my mum is staying and we are all off out for lunch - I have just put a bottle of fizz in the fridge for preparation Smile - hope to get a middle sized run in before the bucks fizz - will see what the morning brings.

pawsnclaws · 25/06/2011 19:19

Wish I (a) looked like Nell McAndrew in my visor and (b) could run anywhere near as fast as her. Not fair (stamps foot petulantly). I just look like a nerd in mine, but in this weather - rain one minute sun the next - it does help.

Hot and humid 5 miles today. Met DH and the boys at the gym and took them all swimming then walked 2 miles back home. Pretty much collapsed on the sofa for the rest of the afternoon.

DrNo not surprised you attracted the attention of the boys in blue, I've only realised from talking to DH's brother (police) that many of our loveliest beauty spots double as dogging hotspots when the sun goes down. Though it would be a pretty weird fetish to go dogging dressed in running gear/in the rain/with tea and cakes, but you never can tell ......

Good luck racers, looking forward to the race reports. Taking ds1 to a cinema party tomorrow (Kung Fu Panda 2 apparently) and then ds2 to a football party in the afternoon. Such lucky boys Smile.

DrNortherner · 25/06/2011 19:50

Lol at dogging head torches with tea and cakes! The resevoir is very close to a very sensitive US military base called Menwith Hill where top secret things go on....so thats why police are extra cautious.

Moshi so sorry your Mum has been admitted again, but you can not be in 2 places at once. Can your sis get to her?

robino · 25/06/2011 21:13

I am so far behind on this thread! Good luck to all running tomorrow.

Moshi sorry to hear about your mum, you really can only do your best. DH's mum has been admitted on and off since DD3 was born in Feb and what with her being 60 miles away, DH working 300 miles away and me juggling 3 DDs and the dog we've been worse than useless.

I have good news on the running front! I managed to get out for a run for the first time in a month yesterday (DH been working crazy hours while away, had brother and family over from Canada for 2 wks, illnesses - the lot) and managed the whole 2.5 miles without stopping! I was slow slow slow but I did it!

So, now I've managed my first (ever so tiny) target I need a plan. Is it better to work on increasing distance at first even if I need to stop and walk occasionally? DH is no longer working 300 miles away (hooray!) and is at home for the foreseeable future while finding a new contract and I am going to take advantage and run.

peachsmuggler · 25/06/2011 21:43

futurity, were you starring in a US teen movie? I always love those scenes in films whn they lie on the bonnet of their cars and watch the planes go overhead! How was Glee? SIL and her DP are down staying with us for the weekend and they are going tomorrow

Debi hope you are having fun in Scotland and that the rest helps your shin.

badger, am with you on the boring and old covetting of subscriptions! Was reading Runner's World waiting at docs t'other day and thought I must ask DP for one for xmas (romance is not dead!!!). Also might get Garmin 205 for birthday next year. Right, will try to control inner geek.

How's the ankle vicar?

I love being pregnant too thecoo! Apart from the vile nausea and mental anguish of the first trimester, it is awesome!

N4NNY, how was your park run?

Emma, I find slower, longer breaths help in that situation. Grin - Cro-magnon

MrsWeds hope your knee is ok. May I prescribe sofa, tv, and a glass of wine? Smile. Next scan on 18th July. Very excited about finding out the sex. DD says the doctor will know which it is as a girl baby will be wearing a pink dress Hmm

DrNo, god that run sounds brutal, but well done for keeping up with all those serious bods. I salute your hard coredness! Still worth almost having your collar felt for 3 cakes! Am sure in better weather the run itself would have more enjoyable.

Moshi very sorry to hear about your mum's latest problems. Am sure your sister can cope till you take over the reigns next weekend. NOt easy for any of you though. Hope she improves soon and hopefully the hospital can get her fed up (in the eating sense!) a bit over the next couple of days.

Happy Birthday for tomorrow squix. Run and then bucks fizz sounds lovely. Try not to do it the other way round Wink

Enjoy Kung Fu Panda 2 paws, we did!!

Great news on the run robino! Yes, work on very slowlyincreasing your distance (rule don't increase your long run distance by more than 10% per week). If you are finding you need to walk a lot then keep at the same distance and just work on working up to running the whole distance. Well done!

We were down in Richmond today and saw all the ladies coming back from their RFL. Looks like they had fun. Was quite Envy

Right, must go and get my dinner. 9.45pm. Needless to say DP is cooking Smile

MrsWednesday · 25/06/2011 23:09

Happy birthday for tomorrow Squix - are you, like me, heading towards the big 4-0? Hope you have a fabulous day.

Peachy, can you see through your computer screen into my living room? Cos wine, TV (Mad Men Series 1) and sofa is exactly what I'm doing :)

Moshi, I really hope your mum is ok, it's so difficult not being able to be there - can your DH take the children so you can spend some time with her? I am thinking of you both and sending healing vibes. There is really only so much you can do when you have a family to look after too.x

Robino, glad you've managed to get out for a run, and that things look more positive for being able to do more.

Paws, have fun being chauffeur - sounds just like the majority of my weekends too.

N4NNY · 25/06/2011 23:45

peachsmuggler parkrun was good thanks and there was no need to be so nervous. I cam 72/76 and finished in 38.08 I walk some of it because I couldn't get up the hill I usually run on the flat but am looking forward to trying to beat my time and get further up the hill before needing to stop.

Themasterandmargaritas · 26/06/2011 06:42

Morning all. I'm back home in one piece after a disastrous run but a great trip. Thanks for all the messages of support, I'll be back later with a full post-run tear jerker for you all. Smile

futurity · 26/06/2011 08:40

peach Glee was fab...good cheesy fun! Going to be a hot one today...good luck to any runners!

futurity · 26/06/2011 09:20

Can't wait to hear your race report themaster !

DrNortherner · 26/06/2011 09:41

OMG master that's a cliff hnager! What happenned? You OK?!

ibbydibby · 26/06/2011 09:45

Haven't posted since last Monday and the thread has moved on somewhat. Sorry about your mum Moshi especially as you are away this weekend....whereabouts in Norfolk are you?

Another week for me of not much running...my DM admitted to hospital with dislocated replacement hip at beginning of last week. She was discharged the next day fortunately (this has happened several times before) and ok (now fingers crossed). Spent good part of 2 days with her either in hospital or at home so loads of work to catch up with. Did manage to go to both training sessions at running club. DH suggested I did something "not too strenuous" on Monday evening, but ended up going out with a group doing mile efforts, and it was HARD. Especially as, unusually, there were only 10 of us in the group and I was by far the slowest, so pushed myself a bit more than usual (so perhaps a good thing..?). Thursday's training was on the track, and I think I always go a bit OTT with the warm-up high knees, heel flicks etc, always trying to be higher/better/faster than anyone else...perhaps because I am not a terribly fast runner and always out to prove something..?

Anyway, think havve pushed myself a bit too much, as yesterday twisted awkwardly and am now in agony with back pain. Presumaly (hopefully) a muscular injury, but have pulled out of 10k that I had entered this morning. Looks like it's going to be a hot one, but hate backing down from things, and missing the social "buzz" that is gained from entering events where I will see friends from runnig club etc.

N4NNY well done on parkrun, I am addicted to this!

EmmaBemma · 26/06/2011 10:31

Sorry to hear your mum's had a setback, Moshi. I hope she can start eating soon and that the ulcers improve.

Well done on your run, robino! And I'm sorry to hear your race didn't go as hoped, Masters - I'll keep an eye out for your report. I've only just clocked that you're in Kenya! I guess my hoped-for grey skies for you was a little out of the question then.

Long run this morning, longest ever: 7.36 miles. Tried to pace myself, did it in 1:08 which I don't think is far off where I need to be for the half marathon. It's quite muggy here today so I was a bit hot and bothered.

Spent approx 50% of time thinking longingly of some sort of baggy singlet/shorts combo rather than the t-shirt and Ronhill traksters I was rocking - I really need some new running gear, as now I'm doing longer distances I get far too sweaty for my current wardrobe. Although, shorts would mean displaying my hi-vis blue/white legs, however I didn't see many other people so perhaps that doesn't matter.

The other 50% was spent dreaming about the recipe for almond and raspberry cream layer cake I saw in yesterday's Guardian: it will be mine. Today.

Going to increase distance by 1 mile a week now. Following DrNo and futurity's advice, that should mean I've trained for the whole 13 miles by Sept 4th.

YeahThatsTheBadger · 26/06/2011 14:29

I'm back! Although it was so hot, I didn't think it sensible to run it. And my running partner was nowhere to be found-she had a late one last night apparently. I was a bit disappointed-if I make a plan, I stick to it and feel a bit let down if other don't treat me the same.
I walked with a friend and another friends mum. It was really nice to catch up with them so I wasn't too disappointed that I didn't run. They wanted to run some bits and were looking to me for encouragement and pace (which is a firstSmile ) We did it in 38 mins, which I thought wasn't too bad for mainly walking. Oh and the dc and dh turned up to cheer me on. Hearing them shouting "Well done mammy" put such a huge grin on my face! Grin Unfortunately, I had a bit of a run in with my Ma after and she hasn't spoken to my yet. Grrr.

Sorry your race didn't go to plan Master. Looking forward to hearing your race report though. Hope your race went well cest.

And so apologies that it wasn't a 'race' report as such. Now to get a training schedule for my 10k...

YeahThatsTheBadger · 26/06/2011 15:02

Oh and happy birthday squix!

TheChewyToffeeMum · 26/06/2011 15:48

I saw a hedgehog! A real live one! I am excited because I have never seen one before Blush. It was trotting along the side of the path I was running along. Also spotted a red squirrel during my 11 miler yesterday which was lovely.

I am chuckling at your "hi-vis legs"comment EmmaBemma - mine are similar.

pawsnclaws · 26/06/2011 15:55

Well done ladies is it just cest we're waiting to hear from now?

It's a balmy 28 degrees right now just waiting for Party 2 to finish then out for my run. Loved Kung Fu Panda 2, but must learn to stop crying at kids films, I'm such a sap.

peachsmuggler · 26/06/2011 17:31

Well done master (sounds grisly but looking forward to hearing heroic tales!) and badger. That was a great time for walking! Very annoying about your friend I agree. Hope cestlavie is ok in all that heat.

Hedgehogs are so cute chewy. We used to get them in our garden when we were little. Used to leave milk for them, which I think makes them explode or something. Whoops!

Don't worry paws, was blubbing away to Toy Story 3 this morning!

sfxmum · 26/06/2011 18:28

squix happy birthday, worry not is not that badGrin

master do tell, sounds intriguing

moshi I am so sorry things are hard at the moment.

crying at kids films, normally no but Toy story 3, Tangled, Up...never mindBlush

sorry for lack of presence and personal comment, dd woke up puking before 5am, she seems fine I want to sleep, like 4 hrs ago

think will head for the pool tomorrow, fancied an early morning run but given that the looser attacking women is still on the loose it may not be the best time to goAngry

futurity · 26/06/2011 19:44

I cry every time at UP at the beginning sequence of their life together (sniff) and don't even get me started on Toy Story 3...I proper sobbed at that in the cinema!

Don't envy anybody doing runs today...I am due to do my long run tomorrow which is only 7 miles but I think I will take it VERY slowly.

EmmaBemma · 26/06/2011 20:04

I won't ever watch Up because of what everyone says about That Bit. I couldn't even handle Ice Age - watched it with my daughter who was three at the time and utterly failed to keep it together at the bit where the mammoth remembers what happened to his wife and kid.

Happy Birthday squix!

ibbydibby, I missed your post before. Sorry to hear about your back injury and having to pull out of the 10K. Hope it is muscular and gets better soon.

EmmaBemma · 26/06/2011 20:05

ps hedgehogs are ace! I love the way they bustle along. Only ever seen a handful of live ones (sadly rather more flat ones) and they always cheer me up.

cestlavie · 26/06/2011 20:21

Hi all, something properly tomorrow, but suffice to say it was a very very hard and hot 13 miles today which I was glad just to finish per se, and something resembling a half decent time but it was some way from an existing PB let alone setting a new one

IlanaK · 26/06/2011 20:25

Can I jump in and ask all you runners a question? I am doing c25k week 5 and have thoroughly enjoyed it so far and not found in unmanageable. But today I almost died! It was sooooo hard! Is this the heat? It was 29 degrees today and although I did try to stay in the shade, it wasn't always possible. Would the heat have made that much of a difference to how the run felt??
