a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

Oops, that sounds a bit bleak actually... Wasn't nice but am now having a relaxing cold beer and barbecue with DW in garden so all good now. Have a good evening everyone

notyummy · 26/06/2011 20:29

Heat can hugely alter your running IME. I run regularly and on a good can put in some quite good times- but not if it is hot! I am really not keen on running first thing in the morning, but on summer holidays I haul myself out of bed to go running early in the morning because trying to run at any other time in Italy in August just kills me.

IlanaK · 26/06/2011 20:35

Thanks. I am also an evening runner. Hate mornings in all ways! I did think of running this morning before it got hot, but just couldn't bring myself to do it.

DrNortherner · 26/06/2011 21:53

Yes Ilana running in the heat is a struggle. I normally do 7/7 miles on a sunday and today only managed 3 Blush It was hot and I struggled. I had teh dog with me and thought if I am struggilng he must be as he is wearing a big black fur coat! So we stopped by the river and I chucked in a few sticks for him and we strolled back.

Cest I feel for you doing a half in this heat, not good. Hope you are not too disheartened about the time? Look forward to hearing more tomorrow.

squix · 26/06/2011 22:59

Thanks for all the birthday wishes - the first day of my 40's has been lovely - started with a humid steady 6 miles then back for champagne and strawberries , out for a lovely lunch (there was a family next to us celebrating a 60th birthday today so we had a joint happy birthday chorus) then a chilled afternoon and evening. 40 is not so bad after all Grin

Felt for all you folk racing in the heat today - it's been warmer here but nothing like as hot as it's been for some of you - I was on a skype video call with my sis this afternoon and they were all in vests and tshirts - we were in wolly cardigans.

Moshi - how's things - so sorry to hear your mum's having a tough time again.

peachsmuggler · 26/06/2011 23:00

God yes Ilana, it really dies. Don't be disheartened, am sure once this crazy heat is over you'll be fine. If you are used to running in the heat then you learn to cope but most of us in this country aren't. I've been running for years and I go to bits in the heat!!

Well done on surviving cestlavie, am very impressed. Hope you enjoyed the beer and BBQ. Looking forward to the race report!

futurity · 27/06/2011 10:38

just did 6 miles...blimey...how on earth did you all run this weekend? I went so slowly and actually in the shade and with the breeze it was manageable but I didn't do the 7 I was planning as I could feel my skin burning (despite suncream). I'm already burnt from yesterday (again..despite suncream!)

cestlavie · 27/06/2011 11:20

Morning all, so, race report from yesterday.

Race was a trail HM, through rough terrain mainly through fields and over farm tracks, with two laps of the course. ?Undulating? (um, I think hilly would have been a better description!) and pretty exposed with only about a mile on each lap through woodland and the rest with only the occasional tree for shade, so about 11 miles were in full sun. The race started at 10.30am so temperature-wise, it was okay when it started but it got hot very fast and by the time I finished, it was about 29/ 30 degrees in the sun. So, all in all, probably the toughest race I?ve had.

Finished in 1.55 (average 8.46 mins per mile), with split times of 54 mins for the first lap and 1.01 for the second, showing how much hotter it was and just how knackered I was on Lap 2! The race itself was fine for about the first 4 miles and I was moving fairly easily and sensibly at 11.5kph average. From mile 4 though, the course started to get more difficult with a long, exposed climb through really rough terrain from about mile 4.5 to 6. The first time round it was hard work, the second time it was just brutal and I could feel myself weaving by the top ? you could feel the sun just beating you down with every step and I managed scarcely an average 11.0kph first time and 10.0kph second time over this section .

By the start of the second lap overall, the temptation to stop and walk got really overwhelming, especially when you?re seeing people drop out after the first lap or stopped and sat in the shade around the water stations. Even at the 13 mile marker, with the finish in sight and everyone waiting I still came incredibly close to giving up which sounds ridiculous now but very reasonable at the time! One thing that did help me was falling back a bit on training from about mile 8 onwards and counting through each mile in seconds in my head - just trying to focus on that to drown out the little voice shouting ?Stop! Stop! Stop!?

So, obviously really gutted that I finished 10 mins outside my original target for the race at 6 mins off my PB ? all that training and effort to get to 1.45 and didn?t get anywhere even close. On the other hand, I don?t think I could have run any harder at all ? when I came through the finish, even a usually unflappable DW looked somewhat concerned. Also I don?t think anyone else out there would have been setting PB?s ? girl I was talking to afterwards finished in 1.53 and had a PB of 1.39 on the same course which maybe gives it some context. And, perhaps most importantly, DS and DD were very enthusiastic about it all with DD insisting that I?d won (which is nice, if wholly untrue!)

notyummy · 27/06/2011 11:31

C'est - thanks for a great report. I think you did incredibly well in the circumstances and I am not sure whether I would have managed to finish going on your description of the conditions. You should be pleased with your time, as I am sure you could knock off 15/20 minutes of it in reality.

Luckily my fitness schedule involved a weights/circuits session at 8 30 in the morning yesterday i.e before the heat. It was hard though and I am aching today, so having a rest day and short run (4 miles prob) tomorrow (because that is all I can fit in before work - I hate 6 30am running but needs must...) At least I have managed - through sheer luck - to avoid running in the heat!

YeahThatsTheBadger · 27/06/2011 11:47

cest you are amazing! I couldn't even manage my measly 5k in that heat. Well done. It sounds horrific though and you did brilliantly just to finish.

I really want to go out for a run today but it's just not possible for me in this heat. Well done futurity. You are dedicated! I have hyperhidrosis (a polite way of saying excessive sweating!) which mainly affects my hands and feet and this heat just makes it ten times worse. And I just can't seem to get enough fluids in me. But took dc's swimming this morning so i'll count that as my exercise instead!

TheChewyToffeeMum · 27/06/2011 11:57

That sounds a bit hardcore cestlavie!

cestlavie · 27/06/2011 12:09

Thanks guys. It was really tough and, to be honest, not something I'd really want to do again as it's nice to enjoy running a bit more than I did yesterday! I think I'll be aiming for races between September and May in the future...

futurity · 27/06/2011 13:09

Dedicated? Stupid more like Wink This morning was the only chance to do my long run this week so thought I would just get out there and do it...the irony is that the rest of the week is back to normal temperatures!

Cest you did amazingly given the conditions and that is lovely that your DD thinks you are a winner...kids really put a perspective on these things so that when you are beating yourself up about a run they can say just the right thing to make you smile.

pawsnclaws · 27/06/2011 13:11

Well done cestlavie, I hate hate hate the heat. I'll happily head out in snow, rain, slush, whatever ..... but I can't handle a hot day. I read somewhere that even a moderately warm day adds 8 beats per minute to your heartrate as your body diverts energy to keeping you cool. And it's scary to see people who look like good, fit runners dropping and suffering.

Very sweaty here again today. No running for me, I managed 3 miles yesterday then gave up and headed home.

squix · 27/06/2011 14:24

cest -well done, sounds dreadful - glad to hear some training tricks worked for you.

Just finished bucketing down here - I am wearing a wooly jumper.

sfxmum · 27/06/2011 14:26

cestlavie well done, sometimes the winning is not quittingGrin Impressive, very good report, lovely that your dd thinks you're The Man

futurity brave dedicated soul

I walked into town and went swimming, running tomorrow possibly in the rain

happy running

Wheelybug · 27/06/2011 14:58

Popping in - missed a lot over the weekend !

Sounds like some heroic running this weekend - cestlavie - sounds like an amazing effort in the circumstances. A time to be proud of. M&M - hope you're not feeling so down on yourself - I am sure you too should be very proud of yourself.

Not to be smug but I had a lovely run yesterday. My long run which I did along the coast at my parents so the early mist and see breeze kept it just cool enough - running along the seaside, no pressure on time, no dh to worry about, listening to music, lots of friendly people out saying hello. It made me realise that its a long time since I've had a run that made me remember I really like running !! I was quite pleased that it means I am now managing 8 miles or so quite happily so must push my distance - am trying to book in time to go for 10 miles.

Wheelybug · 27/06/2011 14:59

and moshi - I hope things are looking up for you all. Take care.

cestlavie · 27/06/2011 15:01

Thanks all. Just checked the reports and finished 86 out of 274 and quite a few ahead of me were from running clubs - winning time was 1.25 so looks like it wasn't the fastest race.

Well done on your run too badger. At the end of the day, it's just about getting out there and doing it which you absolutely did and it sounds like you find the heat really hard work.

Hi and welcome ilana - yep, heat definitely has a big impact on performance!

Good work getting out there and running futurity - today's stiflingly hot down here in London.

squix belated happy birthday to you. Sounds like a great way to spend it!

Waiting to hear all about themasters race report as well....

Wheelybug · 27/06/2011 15:45

Yes - sorry - HAPPY BIRTHDAY SQUIX !

peachsmuggler · 27/06/2011 15:50

Blimey cestlavie that's a truly impressive time in that heat (in any conditions come to that!). You are obviously very well trained both physically and mentally to keep going like that. Well done!

futurity, not sure whether to be impressed or worried for your sanity! Wink. Brilliant effort, getting out in that today. We went to the paddling pool in the park and I was more than happy to get splashed by all the kids, while I was fully clothed, as so blinking hot!!

Wheely, that sounds like a great run. Again, bowing before anyone getting out this weekend!

Still waiting Master's report with bated breath!

futurity · 27/06/2011 16:05

Thank you for kind comments commending me getting out today..but I would question my sanity if I were you Wink roll on the thunder later as it is toooooo hot!

EmmaBemma · 27/06/2011 16:23

hallo! well done cestlavie - agree with everyone, you did brilliantly under the circumstances. Wheelybug, what a lovely run - you make it sound idyllic!

No sign of a heatwave here in Fife: it's pissing down just now, though it is muggy. Did a gentle 5km this morning after yesterday's longer run. Rest day tomorrow, and then I think a spot of fartlek on Wednesday... let joy be unconfined.

MoshiMoshi · 27/06/2011 16:40

Welcome, Ilana! Others have answered your question already but yes the heat does sap energy.

Well done to you cest! You should be proud you hung in there despite the negative voice telling you to stop. Those runs are the hardest and ones that will make you stronger the next time. A sub-2 hour HM is not to be sniffed at.

squix - belated happy birthday!

Thanks all for well wishes for my mum who seems happy in hospital where she is being well looked after. The IV drip feeding her helps a great deal. You are such a great bunch. Likely to be there for a few more days before going home. Baby steps. She got through 3 bags of blood she had lost so much as a result of the bleed from the ulcers. A big thank you to all the donors among you. You are a terrific lot.

15 miles today, 13 of which were on the Alter G trainer in a continued bid to stave off injuries by using the treadmill for part of my weekly long run. Last week I managed a total of 45 miles and feel surprisingly OK despite having had a few weeks off with injury and a virus. I wish the weirdo lurking on the towpaths here would bugger off though please.

Happy running all. Drink plenty of water.

Wheelybug · 27/06/2011 16:45

Emma - idyllic may be taking it a bit far but it was good. Although there were downsides - the swarms of flies which I had to keep swatting away and stopping to do 2 flights of steps when I thought my legs were fine and then I thought I wouldn't be able to start running again after the steps - it completely messed up my rhythm.

moshi -pleased to hear things are looking a little brighter.
