a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

Wheely where does it chaff? is it under the arm?
sports bras are a bit of a problem because they have to be really quite snug, but sometimes the line between just snug enough and ouch I can't breath can be pretty thin
the only thing I would say is make sure it sits flat on the skin not sure vaseline is a good a idea

Wheelybug · 14/06/2011 14:42

No SFX - under my boobs Blush. I assumed it might because they are either a bit big now (due to either my shrinkage or the fact they are old and saggy ... the bras that is Grin).

Wheelybug · 14/06/2011 14:43

I also mean that the bras are a bit big now ... not my boobs... oh dear...

sfxmum · 14/06/2011 14:48

I would get fitted no mucking about it is a proper need not a luxuryWink

Wheelybug · 14/06/2011 14:50

I know SFX (hangs head in shame....)

DebiTheScot · 14/06/2011 14:58

1 1/2 hours to write a 4 week training schedule is nuts! I've got three schedules in front of me- One 10k and two tri and have tried to make a mix of them all. Thanks futurity for emailing me the 10k one.

Argh, it's 3pm, better go and get ds1 from school!

fishie · 14/06/2011 15:04

my charity's got 7 places left on the British 10k in London, 10th July, got to raise £200. do let me know if any of you are interested.

yes def get another bra wheely, i had a hole rubbed in my back with a hook. i like freya active, they avoid dreaded mono-boob.

bonkers20 · 14/06/2011 16:21

Wheely, please make getting a well fitting bra a priority. It is my personal crusade to see woman looking after their breasts when exercising.

I have a Shock Absorber.

DebiTheScot · 14/06/2011 16:46

Ok I think I've made a decision on my aims and plans. Having just done my training schedule I have decided that I'm only going to swim once a week and focus on improving the running and cycling. I'm not a very good swimmer, I don't love doing it & if I worked my butt off I'd prob knock a minute off my time, woopie.

Then after this tri I will do another 10k after the summer & maybe another tri (Sept ish probably). Then over the winter when the cycling is harder I think I'll focus on the running and might enter the Fleet HM in March (v local to me). Even if I wanted to do a HM this autumn I think I'll struggle with the training. I don't want to feel guilty if I go on holiday and don't run.
Does that sound like a good plan?
(That's if the next 4 weeks doesn't kill me, my schedule is quite packed.)

June2009 · 14/06/2011 17:22

drno I just sent you a facebook request, I'd like to add the other people on here who are also on FB but I don't know who is who :D Help!

futurity · 14/06/2011 19:11

You (and anyone else I missed off!) can get to me through DrNo...my photo looks like I am sacrificing myself at the end of my run:)

bonkers20 · 14/06/2011 21:18

How do you friend people on FB without knowing their real names?

drivingmisscrazy · 14/06/2011 21:21

madeindevon (like Devon Cream Fudge?) I am a tiny bit shorter than you (DP would say a whole inch, but she's wrong) and weigh (last time I looked) around 10st; I too should be about 6-7lbs lighter. I read somewhere that every pound of excess weight (fat, not muscle) will take 1% of your performance. So losing 5lbs would mean running 5% faster (is that right?). So if you run a 10 minute mile (10 x 60 = 600 - (5% of 600) 30 = 570 seconds, aka 9 mins and 30 seconds) you'd be half a minute per mile faster. Anyone have anything to back this up?

OP posts:
Wheelybug · 14/06/2011 21:37

hmm driving - I'd like to think that was true but I have lost nearly 2 stone since I started running and I'm pretty sure I haven't sped up by 28%. Unless I'm not trying hard enough Grin.

will make it a priority to get re-measured and new bras everyone - I promise (although won't be able to until next week so guess I'm going to have to put up with the chafing... ouch.).

drivingmisscrazy · 14/06/2011 21:43

yes, it does seem too good to be true!
completely echo the bra advice - you wouldn't walk around all day in a badly fitting bra, so why run in one? if you've lost weight wheely you might need to adjust the straps, or sometimes the elasticity goes and they fit differently then.

June2009 I'm still thinking about it, but my mum has gone off on one with me and is in major guilt-trip mode...Angry SO not what I need right now.

DrNortherner · 14/06/2011 21:53

What's your Mums problem driving? Interestingly, I am an only child, Father is Dad and I have a difficult Mother.....

Accepted your friend request June Smile

I did decide to run tonight after all, dh and I did a very slow 3 miles and it felt good. Then we did some core stuff and stretches on the stray. I am thinking about what I want to do next. Might enter a couple of 10k's and try to concentrate on that, and look for a nice HM late this year or early next year. My SIL is running her first HM this year (GNR) and we are so competitive as a family (in a nice way!) she wants to beat my time, but they are spending 7 weeks at their apt in Spain over the summer so will have to do her long runs in the Spanish heat......ouch.

What sites do you guys use to find races?

DrNortherner · 14/06/2011 21:54

Father is dead that should read......Blush

drivingmisscrazy · 14/06/2011 22:04

her problem is that she is lonely and I have a small child and another on the way, plus a full-time job, a house to run, various other (DP related) family obligations, an allotment, and she expects me to find 'at least three full days' to stay with her, even though I try to see her about every 6 weeks. She just doesn't really think that my family is my family. Sigh. Nothing is ever enough. Thanks for asking! It makes me very sad - I know in my heart of hearts that I am pretty good to her (and, if I'm honest, that she doesn't always deserve this), but I fall for the emotional blackmail every time.

I'd rather talk about running! I don't often look for UK based races - although we visit DD's (or soon to be DDs'!) dad and his family in Yorkshire and it might be nice to find a race there next year. I use a site called RunIreland, but others will know of similar things that have a UK focus.

I am following an adapted version of Hal Higdon's intermediate half marathon training plan (same types of training, but with more mileage on easy runs and long runs); even so, the mileage feels very light to me (5 miles yest, 6x400 intervals tomorrow, 6 miles Thurs, 5 miles pace, 8 miles Sunday), but I suspect my speed would improve with more recovery time. Mileage will go up as I go on, though. Has anyone else used it? or any of his plans?

My bra is well more than 2 years old and my trainers 4 years (I know this because I bought them in LA last time I was there for a conference).
They still work though.

I also have no boobs, but heck...I'm gonna look after the ones I do have!

Oooo, off to find my inbox driving

DebiTheScot · 14/06/2011 23:10

That was a good time sciencebint. I pause runkeeper if I stop too.

I did a 12.5mile cycle today with ds2 (2 1/2) on the back of my bike. Did a couple of sprint bits and a killer hill & my average was only 1.5mph less than without him on the back.
Then did a 3.5 mile run this eve. I thought I was running really slowly but did the 1st mile in 8.5 mins! Whole run was 30 mins.

DebiTheScot · 14/06/2011 23:11

Ditto on the bras and shoes bonkers. I was too Blush to admit it until you did Grin

June2009 · 15/06/2011 07:50

bonkers the sponsoring pages usually have people's names on them.
Thanks drno i'll have to have a look from a proper computer, i can't see your fb friends from my iphone. I'm sure it's there somewhere ... :)

futurity · 15/06/2011 08:18

Well I tried to do netball last night but after the warm up and five mins of play I realised my legs weren't up to it so I watched for the rest of the game which was fine. Aching a lot less today but I am glad I am not at running club until tomorrow night...I will just do a bike ride today.
