a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

Yes, it's exactly the same (apart from the colour) - I decided a HRM wasn't worth the extra £30...

DebiTheScot · 13/06/2011 22:05

moshi I did tell dh about the original comment but haven't told him I've given you the details in such a smutty way!

Yesterday's results are online now and we came 12th out of 41. 2nd in our category but as the categories were things like 'Computer's and IT' they don't mean much. We were 1 min 40 behind the winners in our category and I don't think the time we wasted was quite that long.
I have been thinking all day though that if I can run 4.2km in 20 mins I can do 10k in a lot less than an hour (that was my last time, my best is about 55). I think I need to do some sprints/fartlegs/whatever otherwise my speed will never increase above the 9.5ish min mile (5.5ish min km?) I run normally.
I've been looking at the sprint tri schedule on the triathlete bit of the RW website and it's got some good varied stuff for all 3 bits. There's a 10 week schedule which looks fine (I'd have to jump in at week 5). There's also a 4 week schedule for 10k but I can't see it as I'm not subscribed to RW.
Do any of you use the RW schedules? Moshi have you used their triathlete schedules? For the 1st one I used a 220 one which was fine but didn't have any more detail than '40 min run'

drivingmisscrazy · 13/06/2011 22:11

Debi you crack me up! I love the idea of 'fartlegs' - was that what you ran in your relay - for extra forward propulsion?

OP posts:
futurity · 13/06/2011 22:15

I have the 305 but stopped using the HRM when the battery ran out! My friend just got the 205 and like others say I think it is just the same.

We will work on speed together then drivingmisscrazy ! Once I get into training the distance isn't really a problem so long as I build up carefully. Speedwork isn't really a problem. It's just combining speed AND distance that is the problem! :)

I am not aiming for a sub 2 hour half or anything speedy like that...but 2 hours 10-15 would be nice...and not feeling rubbish in the last two miles would be better...I think both those things are achievable. I remember commenting on my facebook when I started training for this half how difficult 7 miles was and how I wondered if it would ever get easier...well it did..it just took time. Now I don't even blink at 7 miles...would like to feel like that about 10 (not saying 13 as that is just cheeky!)

futurity · 13/06/2011 22:18

Debi I am subscribed to Runners World if you want me to send you a screen grab or something of the training plan that you can't see?

drivingmisscrazy · 13/06/2011 22:19

yes, I think I'm looking for about 2h10 for my half at the beginning of September (my pb is 2:12 back in 2008, but I was younger then, and I've lost almost 2 years' running since). I can do speedwork too over short distances - but as you say, putting them together is the hard part.

ThatVikRinA22 · 13/06/2011 22:38

well hello all....ive decided to brave the real runners threads!

ive just done a couple of 5k runs painfully slowly (35mins!) - am getting some decent shoes and my gait assessed next week and have just emailed the local running club!

so while im not in the same league as most of you i thought id dip a toe in and see if the water was warm!

Wheelybug · 13/06/2011 22:41

Thanks cest - you'd sold me on that one and then I couldn't find anywhere that could guarantee getting it to me on time. So ahve found something similar - you helped me focus though on size etc ! You're right DH doesn't need hydration for his runs - I was being dim and hadn't noticed that.

Glad things seem to be going in the right direction moshi. Pleased to hear you're back running ! My bro is doing Abingdon too.

Right - it is dreaded Tuesday tomorrow. Treadmill run, short break, then toddler swimming. I see too much of the inside of the sports centre tomorrow.

Wheelybug · 13/06/2011 22:42

Welcome vicar !

DebiTheScot · 13/06/2011 22:42

Lol Grin I don't know how a k became a g. Much better name though don't you think?

futurity that'd be great thanks. Or paste it into Word to email. It's the 3 times a week 4 week 10k plan I'm after. I'll pm you my email address.

drivingmisscrazy · 13/06/2011 22:43

vicar welcome - there's only one league here - league of runners! (might use that for the next thread title). Sounds like you are hooked! How long have you been running? what are you planning to do next?

OP posts:
backwardpossom · 13/06/2011 22:49

Glad you made it over, vicar :)

ThatVikRinA22 · 13/06/2011 22:55

not long really - well....sort of....i started running last year to get fit for a fitness test - i did C25K but it totally dropped off over winter and i used the gym more - treadmill running is so boring though...only ever did about 12 - 15 mins....
anyway - good weather back so thought id step out a few weeks ago and see what i could do - first time out did a couple of miles
then back to treadmill - 12 mins (yawn yawn yawn!)
so decided outdoor is much nicer. did another couple of short runs, then found a perfect 5k route locally. attempted that on Saturday - did it very slowly and had to walk a few times.
did it again today - only had to stop twice this time, still painfully slow but did it!
after taking advice on here decided to go get gait assessed at a proper running shop as had a bit of knee pain....so thats where im up to! going next week and i just emailed the local viking striders club tonight to see if i can join them - figured it would keep me motivated and its lonely on my own! hope i can go even though i work shifts....but fitness is an important part of my job
id like to start to enter some proper races when my speed is a little better. i loved my run today. got to a point where i felt i could just keep going....that has to be a good sign!

intend to go to the gym on Weds but might sneak a crafty little run in afterwards....Grin

DrNortherner · 14/06/2011 07:18

Morning all, welcome Vicar Smile

I was planning on doing a3 mile recovery run today, but can confirm that DOMS is indeed at it's most painful 48 hours after the event. This morning my legs are so sore I am not running later today. Just stretching and foam roller for me today. Think 3 days full rest should do it. Hod do you feel today futurity?

futurity · 14/06/2011 09:38

better than yesterday....still sore though so am not running until Thursday when I have running club and I will only due a few miles then. I am meant to have netball tonight...might still go but only to watch!

DrNortherner · 14/06/2011 09:41

Ah you see my running club is tonight, and it's a point to point 5 mile race so not for me.....might drag my bike out actually

futurity · 14/06/2011 10:02

am thinking about going out on my shiny new bike in a bit....just thinking mind you..not committed to it yet!

sfxmum · 14/06/2011 10:32

hello everyone
finally sort of caught up with the news although I have been keeping an eye on the achievements over on the other side

DrN brilliant race, great time, doubts be goneSmile

futurity great report and very good race, seems like a good learning experience also

moshi glad to hear things with your mum are improving despite the scary side effects. excellent news regarding housekeeper I expect it makes things a little easier, take good care of yourself

a big THANK YOU to all who supported and sponsored us this weekend, we seem to still be gathering donations from all over.
We had a great day, it was never about the time, it took us nearly an hour to do the 5K but the point was for dd to go with us and to raise money for a good cause, and she was a star

dd wanted to go as near the front as possible for the start and bolted out with dh chasing after her, it took me 1km to catch with them, she was very keen on running, jogging and walking all the way and she achieved this albeit with stops by the stewards for high 5s and to tell them (all of them!) what a great event it wasGrin she also got a little side tracked by interesting trees and assorted landscape details.
I loved that she sprinted at the end shouting 'I did it' to loads of encouragement from all the lovely people there.
I am very proud that my newly 6yr old did this with joy and a sense of purpose and all in the constant rain
will put pic on profile

happy running shall commence proper training now

sfxmum · 14/06/2011 10:33

sorry meant to say welcome to all the new runners joining the thread
and I hope everyone else is doing well too

DrNortherner · 14/06/2011 11:07

I am busy looking for races to enter at work, and came accross this poem about running:

We swing ungirded hips,
And lightened are our eyes.
The rain is on our lips,
We do not run for prize.

We know not whom we trust
Nor witherward we fare,
But we run because we must
Through the great, wide air.

The waters of the seas
Are troubled as by storm.
The tempest strips the trees
And does not leave them warm.
Does the tearing tempest pause?
Do the tree-tops ask it why?
So we run without a cause
'Neath the big, bare sky.

The rain is on our lips,
We do not run for prize.
But the storm the water whips
And the wave howls to the skies.
The winds arise and strike it
And scatter it like sand,
And we run because we like it
Through the broad, bright land

madeindevon2 · 14/06/2011 11:11

feeling surprisingly ok today after the HM on sunday. plan on gym tonight. easy one with lots of stretching after!
have a question....im carrying too much weight...ideally need to lose 9-14 lb. how much impact with that have on my run timings you think?
im 10st 4 and only 5 ft 3
shodul be 9 and half really....

cestlavie · 14/06/2011 11:13

sfx that's very impressive and well done to your DD! Can't imagine DS (5) having the determination and perseverance to push through all of that... We tried a short (1k) run together to the shops the other day and there were short bursts of intense running coupled with LOTS of stopping and complaining about "tired little legs"

Hi Vicar glad to have you hear. Lots of helpful advice around if you need any.

Good to hear your mum's continuing to make progress Moshi and that you're seeing a route back into running properly. Clearly you've missed it a lot and sound very happy to be back in training. What is a G Trainer by the way? They sound great. Hope ankle sorts itself out quickly

Glad to be of help Wheely - hope your DH likes!

June2009 · 14/06/2011 13:18

sfx that's really sweet. I hope dd runs with me one day (she's only 2!)

It's hard to keep up witht the thread, it moves on so quick. I've missed loads of posts.

I think I'm about to "garminify" myself Grin. Maybe after our holiday if I have any money left.

driving Go on, come run with me, I need it!! :D I signed up for "run to the beat" because it has music stations all along and I thought that would probably help and make it less "boring".

Thanks for the advice on looking at runners world website, will have a look there for a 10 miler.

to newbies, I'm new to running and to the thread also. Did my first event (10k) a couple of weeks ago and signed up for a half at the end of september with not that much spare time to train for it :S (and wondering why oh why I let my friend talk me into it!!)

The running club is in a couple of days but I still have a cold so not entirely sure I should go.

drno "But we run because we must" is so true isn't it. I haven't trained or run since last thursday and going slowly insane.

Wheelybug · 14/06/2011 14:22

Sounds like a fun event SFX and well done to your dd. I don't know how my dd1 (also 6) would get on - I think she'd certainly be enthusiastic and give it a go. I did eventually get round to sponsoring you.

devon - I think losing weight probably helps. I've lost 2 stone since I started running and I have got faster. But then, I've been running for almost 2 years so it might just be practice !! I suppose it makes sense that the less you're carrying the faster you will go.

vicar - treadmill running is the pits. I've been doing 2 runs a week on the treadmill due to creche in the gym for dd2. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to run. It does get better I promise ! I run slower on the treadmill than outside and not as far although I have now cracked my mental block about going over 5 miles and have been doing 1 session a week of 10K. It helps to vary what you're doing with speed (or incline although I never do inclines on a treadmill). That said, I started off running much much shorter and slower distances on the treadmill. I have also found recently that it helps to have ipod on and bbc news 24 on the tv (no sound but it gives you something to look at, although everytime I've been in there over the last 2 weeks its always David Cameron visiting a hospital. I was wondering today if my gym just had a tape !).

Wheelybug · 14/06/2011 14:26

oh and a bit of advice from those experienced - avert eyes cestlavie Grin - but the last couple of times I've run I've had terrible chafing from my bra and it has now rubbed loads of skin off. I tried a different one today but same happened. Anything I can do to keep wearing a sports bra and running without making it worse ? (I think I need new bras but keep putting off getting re-measured which may be the problem).
