a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

Had a quick read back and wanted to say to cestlavie - you are training at too fast a pace I suspect and need to slow down to get the most out of your sessions.

I think I am missing some of you from FB so if you want to get in touch, initials are WR on DrNo's and other's list of friends. This must be the only place on MN where we want to out ourselves in RL. If you look at running websites a lot of people give their real names. I think it may be because we are all quite open and unafraid of presenting our true selves (nothing to hide possibly?)

9 miles to run today with 4 at HM pace which will be interesting as I have no idea what that is at the moment. I will see if 6m30s-6m45s feels sustainable I think.

Happy running everyone.

PS Visited my mum last night who seems much better and the nurse tells me she hasn't had any more hallucinations. So I thought all was well except when she then mentioned the hidden cameras in the air conditioning shaft where they were watching her from. Hmmm.

madeindevon2 · 15/06/2011 09:49

thanks driving. ultimately im just under 10 min miles at moment. wanna get closer 9 mins miles ultimately!! just not sure how to do it!
gonna start with losing the weight (and trying to do more high intensity short burst runs...)
how do i find you on FB then!?
and yes i LOVE fudge and devon clotted cream. hmmmm
i did the st albans half marathon on sunday for the charity PSP in case that helps find me? check out virgin money giving site

cestlavie · 15/06/2011 10:13

Afraid will have to sit out the bra conversation.... but on the other bits...!

Thanks for the advice Moshi. Yes, you?re right, I?m always running too fast on long runs and should slow it down so I can get more out of the other sessions. I?m appallingly ill-disciplined when it comes to running slowly and always have a tendency to push too hard. Worth perhaps bearing in mind for your session today as well! Know that you?re very fast but 6.30 min/mile in the middle sounds very quick for someone recovering from injury? Good to hear that the nurses are pleased with how your mum is doing even if not all?s absolutely perfect

DrNo, I?ve always used the Runners World site. Really good for searching by race length and location plus often have a lot of reviews, especially of the bigger races (which can be very helpful, e.g. on how hilly a course is, whether they?re well marshalled etc.) The magazine version can be pretty good too ? they tend to have ?specials? on most scenic races, most popular etc.

Drivingmiss that HM schedule looks about right for intermediate (which is what I?m working towards in terms of time and working very vaguely off a RW schedule with, um, big gaps missing from it!). I only have one longer run a week, peaking at about 10 ? 12 miles. The rest of the training is about intervals, tempo runs, recovery runs, the majority of which are 6 miles are under. Thing about HM, as I think Moshi mentioned, is that it really does sit between a 10K and marathon and is more about speed and pacing than endurance and time on your feet.

Great time sciencebint - that?s darn fast in training. You should be well on track for under 1.50 for the HM! My Runmeter also automatically stops when I stop but it doesn?t count, well in my head anyway, if it?s a forced stop like for traffic lights although admittedly am sometimes hoping the lights go to red by the time i get there!

Had a 8.5K tempo run in this morning in 39.10, though to sciencebint?s point, this did include a few more stops than would have been ideal. Probably for the best though as set off far too fast...

Do like this thread - very friendly atmosphere on here Grin

ibbydibby · 15/06/2011 10:25

Just popping in as have not posted for a week and not done much running either. Was going to go out this morning, but a friend has phoned and needs to "pop round" with something, so need to stay in now. I did go out with running club on Monday and that was my first run for a week. Legs felt a bit stiff, but I was pleased that I forced myself to go with a "timed efforts" group rather than the "steady run" group.

Have just this morning signed up for a 10k on June 26th. Having entered at least 3 races this year am beginning to appreciated the £2 or so reduction in race entry fees that you benefit from if you belong to a club.

Yesterday found I had £40 in my purse which is weird for me as don't usually carry that much cash around - unless I need it for something specific. I keep racking my brains to see if someone has given it to me to buy something/pay for something, but just cannot account for it. Am thinking that I may put it into my "Garmin" fund. Am seriously tempted, especially as I think it would be useful to keep an eye on my pace while running etc etc

Moshi hope your mum continues to do well.

June2009 · 15/06/2011 10:39

right, futurity and moshi I sent you a friends request on FB.
so I have drno as well,
driving and the rest :), how do I find you? I'm SM on drNo and a recently added friend so I should be quite easy to find I think (unless I messed around too much with my privacy settings?!)

For the bra chaffing, I haven;t experienced that, you need a new bra definitely! I'd say use sudocrem, I used it on my c-section scar when it was getting red with chaffing/heat/sweat.
You probably need to do some topless running Grin let the air get to it so it heals quicker.

Impressed with the triathlon training, I really want to sign up for one but too scared. I should go and see one first I think.

futurity · 15/06/2011 10:48

accepted you June2009. Think I have everyone now?

Just did little bike ride...I love my bike..its so shiny and speedy :)

futurity · 15/06/2011 10:52

agree with your comment Moshi about having "nothing to hide"...I figure if I can walk to school on the school run wearing my running gear and showing my sausage like thighs to the world then I must have nothing to hide!

ibbydibby · 15/06/2011 11:27

ooops, with my Garmin comment I meant to ask which Garmin would you recommend? As there seem to be several different versions. Have teeny wrists by the way - will a Garmin fit me?

MoshiMoshi · 15/06/2011 12:35

On the topic of chafing, a lot of runners I know swear by either Vaseline or Bodyglide.

cestlavie - noted. Will go for 6m45s miles.

badger and June - we are connected! Smile

futurity · 15/06/2011 13:03

I think I have just sent a FB friend request to you Badger...at least I hope it is you!!!?

DrNortherner · 15/06/2011 13:05

ibby I ahve the Garmin 110 forerunner and it tells you average pace and distance. When you upload your stats it gives you calories burned and mile splits and elevation. I love it. I have small wrists too, the strap has holes all the way round so should fit any size.

Question - does anyone else find themselves STARVING in the days after a race? Immediatley after my HM I had to force myself to eat, I did not feel hungry. But yesterday and today I can not get enough food. I am embracing it but hoping it won't last forever or I will need new clothes!

Joby1970 · 15/06/2011 13:12

btw my user name is pronounced JO...B.. not JOBBY!! lol

Just bought myself new pair of trainers from the NIKE Factory outlet. Nike Air Vapour Quick 2. £28

DebiTheScot · 15/06/2011 13:22

futurity you sent me one. I'll respond once I'm not at work as my work are so unreasonable they don't let me on fb Grin
I've got some of you on fb but I don't think I'd get 100% in a matching mn names to real names test! I'm easy to find through the others as my real name is on my mn name (clearly I set it up years ago when I was young and naive)

futurity · 15/06/2011 13:24

hmmm...not really DrNo although I eat too much anyway! I also found it very hard to eat after the race (and during it as well which I must sort out as I think I ran out of energy..pondering whether gels would be better than jelly babies?). I had a recovery drink when finished but didn't fancy much else until the evening when I was hungry for Chinese but no more hungry than normal.

Am trying to get rid of 1/2 stone...after discussion about does weight loss improve running speed I did a quick Google and found something that said 10lb loss equates to 4.5 mins in half marathon, 2 mins in 10K and so on...can't remember the rest though or where the site was I read this on!

ibbydibby · 15/06/2011 13:52

DrNo I don't necessarily feel hungry but I do tend to eat more in the few days after a race, so maybe there is a subconscious urge to refuel?

Know what you mean about forcing yourself to eat after a race - I did the London Marathon a few years ago, did not twig until actually running that I would be running through my lunchtime, ie would not eat lunch! Expected to be ravenously hungry afterwards, but did not fancy food at all. I informed DH that I coldn't face any dinner that evening whereupon he told me in no uncertain terms that I MUST. EAT DINNER. I did eat it but didn't enjoy it.

futurity · 15/06/2011 13:55

found it: If you're already trying to shed some pounds, here's more incentive: Research has shown that, on average, runners get two seconds per mile faster for every pound they lose. So, for example, a 10-pound weight loss would shave about one minute off your 5K race time.

from here: running.about.com/od/howtorun/tp/runfaster.htm

sfxmum · 15/06/2011 14:20

hello all

on the weight subject on my experience there is definitely an impact on speed and even stamina, allowing for ageing and difference in training, before dd I was quite a lot lighter and could easily do 5k under 30 without effort, so as an easy run
after dd having put on 4st Blush it was much much harder and it took me a while to get to any sort of fitness
Now I definitely need to loose a fair bit and the incentive of better time might just be what I need right now

cestlavie · 15/06/2011 14:39

Interesting futurity though presumably that's not linear?

As in I mean if your target/ optimum weight is say 10 stone and your current weight is 12 stone, there'd be a different impact on speed in losing the first pound than the last pound?

Also, I guess if you start going below your optimum weight, then imagine that wouldn't necessarily lead to an improvement in performance?

Wheelybug · 15/06/2011 14:56

my bras are certainly more than 2 years old because I didn't buy any when I restarted running after dd2 Blush although actually now I think about it, as I was breastfeeding when I started I wasn't wearing them ...so maybe they are more like 2 years old. Am a D cup too (or might not be anymore) so should probably make more of an effort. I promise to do something about it as soon as possible. Who said running was a cheap option though ? New trainers every 4 or 5 months, gym membership, bras every few months, new running clothes when I go down a size, a new garmin every time someone gets a better one....

Great time Science - you sound more than on track for your goal.

moshi - Glad your mum seems to be improving generally - and hope the latest hallucination is a blip.

That weight loss/speed theory sounds more reasonable futurity and I would say that would roughly be about right in my experience. Although obviously, as I say, I have also done more running so would have got faster anyway.

For anyone who hasn't got me on fb, I am VH and can be found on DrNo's and others friends.

notyummy · 15/06/2011 15:45

Hi all!

Have 2 running related things to report.

7 miles this morning in 57 minutes, which is 2 minutes slower than I hoped. It was warm and humid and I think this had something to do with it - I was faster per mile over a half marathon distance. Disappointing! I had done cicuits last night and had a slightly twingy inner thigh, but if I am honest it didn't hinder me that much.

School sports day this Pm and 2nd out of 24 in mums race Grin. Was determined not to look like scary competitive mum so had gone in flipflops and had to run barefoot - that was an error as most of them had trainer!! Due to bare foot I had a rubbish start on the grass - otherwise I am convinced I would have triumphed [taking it far to seriously emoticon] I was slightly mollified when I chatted to the winner to discover than she was 13 years younger than me!

ibbydibby · 15/06/2011 15:57

well done notyummy 2 runs in one day.

I am always slower when it's humid, not sure if it's psychological (can't stand the heat) or physical, or both.

Have always wanted to run in a mums race, (just to see how I fared you understand) but parent races were banned from the DCs' primary school years ago, as a dad fell over and broke his collar bone.

Should have gone running this morning but didn't, feeling a bit guilty as I saw someone from the running club running down my road when I went out to collect DS2 from school. Runner looked a bit surprised - don't think he knew I lived in the same village as him. No more opportunity to run today as now off to collect DS1 from school, and he has a concert tonight, which we are going to.

I work from home, and have been unexpectedly offered another project (approx 26hrs) today. Needs to be completely finsished by end of July, and have stacks of other work to do between now and then. Arrrggg, what to do, really need the money....

bonkers20 · 15/06/2011 16:10

Ooooh the Mums race! There was nearly a mutiny when someone's older SISTER entered the Mums race and stole my title! I don't think she had a dodgy 4 month post-partum pelvic floor. cow

futurity · 15/06/2011 16:10

I would soo love to run in a Mum's race as I am incredibly competitive when it comes to that sort of thing (no shame emoticon). There are a lot of running mums at school though so we would all turn up in our proper trainers and probably do ourselves an injury...hence why they don't do it at our school!

I agree with your comments cestlavie about the weight thing...it would only work if you had weight to lose...if I was 1/2 a stone lighter I would never dream of wanting to lose more as I would like an ill person as I don't look good too skinny.

futurity · 15/06/2011 16:11

that's just wrong Bonkers!! Plain wrong!! How dare she! (as I said..competitive about Mum's races which I don't even do!)

drivingmisscrazy · 15/06/2011 16:20

my interval paces are slower than Moshi's long run pace...

I'm curious about this - is it simply at some level genetic? and how much does training change things? I know I don't train at anything like the level of some here, but I think I'm working within my own capacity. It's just that I feel that there's a definite limit to what I can achieve - given everything else that's going on in my life - and I find it quite hard to accept that. Does anyone else feel like this?
