Ooh a lovely new thread! I'm so impressed with all of you, you are doing really well.

I've had a few issues with the running thing over the last couple of weeks but I think I'm now back to moving onwards and upwards!
I had a 5K planned for last Saturday and for some reason, a couple of weeks ago I decided not to follow my podcast, just see how quickly I could do the 5K. I did it in a respectable time (for me) with a run/walk thing going on. But of course, then I couldn't go back to the podcast because I'd become completely obsessed with 'beating' my time and as a result, did a bit of damage to my knee. To make matters worse, I was really poorly on Friday night and couldn't do the run on Saturday anyway.

I've started back on the podcast again this morning but now I'm doing to C25K nhs one, as lots of you have had success with it and I wonder if the lengths of the runs/walks on the one I was previously doing (generally above 60 mins each time) were just a step too far for my unfit legs. I've gone back a few weeks to build up my confidence again so did week 3 run 1 today.

Seeing so many of you progressing well is a real inspiration. Keep it up!!

Thanks girlies! Your comments motivated me to move my big fat bahookie and have just come back from W2R2, and it was fun - so pleased I went.

supersal - yes, you're right, fifty is the new forty!

dubai - running and Shred - I am awestruck!

MissGB - hello :) - we hid in a bush tonight when we spotted my next door neighbour out for a walk Grin - kept running on the spot though. Am getting less embarrassed as I go on though.

bladders - hello! GloryDays might have to be my new name :)

happypotter - hi!

Oh Laura mysteriously disappeared from my ipod today as well ...

bladders · 21/03/2011 19:53

Glory Days is a lovely name.... I like that.

OK, so whats this 30 day shred then? I lurk on here all the time and it seems to get mentioned a lot.

I quite fancy a four pack, used to have lovely stomach muscles years ago, these days I have an c section overhang :( Its not a pretty sight!
Really hoping that will be something I can wave goodbye to as the running improves! Am swimming once a week as well. I would love to eventually be able to do a tri.

puffylovett · 21/03/2011 21:40

Hi - can I join? I really really want to start doing this. It might take me a week or so to start though, as I've damaged a rib muscle coughing hard from a nasty cold Sad

Can anyone tell me how to go about downloading a C25K podcast with decent music (think 80/90s)

midtowner · 22/03/2011 11:53

Morning all and welcome MisGB, bladders and puffy Grin

Nice to see you happypotter, was wondering where you were! Sorry to hear about your knee and being poorly - hope you get back into the swing of it soon.

Slutty and supersal well done on getting out. I loved the idea of ordering the stuff from the back of the weekend papers - I don't read the papers here but one of my favourite pastimes is crying with laughter about all the things you never knew you needed Smile when I'm back in the UK. You're not there yet if you're on this thread!

I had piste's wooden legs on this morning - could barely move, but hey, I ran for 30 mins more than I would have if I'd stayed in bed. Not sure why, dh is away so I didn't have any Wine last night, which was last week's excuse for being tired and slow. I went out a bit later and it's getting lighter again. The early morning light here is fantastic so I felt quite cheerful by the time I got home, despite achy calves.

Have a great day ya'll!

midtowner · 22/03/2011 12:03

Puffy I downloaded a C25K app from cool running and put my own guilty secret music on. Just had a quick google and it looks like there are a few podcasts to choose from here

mollycuddles · 22/03/2011 14:14

Just did my second 25 minuter. W7 r1. Was so lethargic and legs so heavy. No wine here either. It really isn't worth running at all at 15 minute mile pace is it?
Feeling a bit despondent

Prunnhilda · 22/03/2011 14:44

Puffy I downloaded an app (it's called Get Running) and I love it - the woman's voice is so soothing and encouraging and she tells me just what to do. I listen to my own music and sometimes to Radio 4 if it's not too boring. Another suggestion was to download radio progs or spoken word podcasts as they make the time pass more quickly. Haven't got round to that yet.

So I went out yesterday in the glorious sunshine and meant to swim today but I'm sadly a bit hung over Blush I did buy a running mag though and am quite interested because I'm just at the beginning of all this (3.5 weeks in) and I don't really know how to run for longer iyswim. Just been reading about alternating jogging and sprinting when you get to the 5k mark which improves your speed apparently on the straight runs too. Is anyone doing that?

bluebump · 22/03/2011 16:49

Well i'm out for week 1 run 3 even though I started over 2 weeks ago - what with DP being away and me only managing 2 runs a week it's slow going for me but as always when i'm feeling a bit dispondant (is that the right word/spelling) before i'm due a run I have a catch up on this thread and feel all inspired again! Grin Thanks! I'm glad to see some newbies too as I thought I was getting very far behind you all!

GypsyMoth · 22/03/2011 18:52

off for a 30 min run soon.....got some new music to run to. so exciting!!Grin

mollycuddles - they always say you should try to cover your run before upping the pace, and you're getting there.

I just did w4r3, I can't imagine running 8 minutes next week, nevermind 20.

justaminute · 22/03/2011 20:07

I seemed to have my bambi legs on tonight. I just did w7 r1 and forgot that I was running for the first 10 minutes or so Smile. It felt really good. Admittedly the last 5 minutes were hard but I kept thinking about wanting to tell you all that I'd done it. I covered 2.5 miles in 25 minutes so I think I'm on for 5K in 30 mins.

For those of you who are losing the podcast check your itunes setting when you sync your ipod. I discovered that mine was set to not sync played podcasts. I think I find it harder to believe that I've just given techie advice rather than believe that I'm now a runner Grin

SluttySlutSlutOfTheSkies · 22/03/2011 23:07

Thanks for that justaminute, will check my settings. Grin at you finding it hard to believe you're a running techie now. I find it quite incredible that I'm posting on Sport and Exercise - have been a stranger to both for some time!

Thanks everyone for all your support - back out tomorrow W2R3, no doubt hiding in bushes in case I bump into people I know ;).

Happy running!

midtowner · 23/03/2011 01:48

lucky you justamin - may I borrow your legs please?

I now have my chip, and have strung my chip holder on to my shoelaces and hobbled around the house in it (too excited and impatient to put both shoes on at once) to set it off. Am contemplating a short outing tomorrow morning to give it a go, but snow is forecast Shock

What music did you have tonight Tiff?

cubscout · 23/03/2011 08:24

Snow Shock Shock! It's a lovely morning here in the UK, forecast to be the warmest day of the year so far. I'm off today so running while ds has tennis - variation from my normal 2 routes so a bit more interesting.

Molly - agree it's better to run a bit slower. Sometimes I find that even though I'm managing 5k regularly, it's not always easy, some days it feel much more difficult, others easier. Would like justaminute's legs though!

Supersal - I'm always terrible if I'm hungry. I try and make sure I've had a bit of toast or banana 20 mins before I go out.

Prunnhilda - a marathon running friend told me about the sprint/job technique. I'm trying it (though I would not call it sprinting, more 'a bit faster'). I have shaved of about 5 mins over the last 3 weeks from 35 mins to (just) 30 mins for the 5k.

Well done everyone for getting out and now the weather is getting better (sorry midtowner!) we can all run happy.

SluttySlutSlutOfTheSkies · 23/03/2011 08:31

Shock snow! I was snowed in once in New York for five days - it was lovely though, but I wasn't running in it :), hope you manage to get out midtowner.

Hopefully I'll have justamin's bambi legs on tonight and not my wooden ones ;)

dubaipieeye · 23/03/2011 11:12

Hello runners Grin

So many posts to catch up with so little time! Just wanted to say well done everyone. The pup and I did our W6R1 today and I prefered the running bits to the walking! Wonders will never cease... x

girtlush · 23/03/2011 12:14

Hello everyone, I haven't popped in for a while, everyone is doing reeeaaalllyyy well :o

I have just done week 5 run 3 (miracle) and it actually wasn't too bad, I can't believe I have run for 20 mins without stopping Shock

I was just after some advice, I keep getting a stitch about 2/3 of the way through my runs. At the moment I just run through it but it takes my breath away and makes it even more difficult to breathe when I'm already completley knackered a bit out of breath. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on preventing them in the first place, or how get rid of them when they happen?

Also how do you track the distance you have run? I have a pedometer app on my ipod but it is rubbish. I did have a look at a map your run website but I couldn't work it because I am thick not very good at technology :o

TIA

RatherBeOnThePiste · 23/03/2011 18:54

Hello everyone - not been out since Saturday because of dodgy knee and now we have family to stay from overseas so I'm feeling a bit out of the running loop. I shall be having to start again at this rate!

Girt - I have Sparkle as a distance app on iphone, it is free and very good. I highly recommend it on both counts!

Just waiting for dp to get home then am off out for wk6 run 2. Getting a bit bored of my playlist though, need some new tunes!!

bluebump · 23/03/2011 20:06

Well I finished week 1 run 3 but my knees hurt so much today, I don't know what I have done to them but I hope I feel better tomorrow when I plan to do week 2 run 1.

I had the same problem with my podcasts when uploading from iTunes, I was just about to go out when I realised my run was missing from my iPod, cue me cursing and nearly crying and DP having to mend it for me!! Blush

ClenchedBottom · 23/03/2011 22:08

Hello everyone.
well, I got out again today and did a W4 run (quick recap - I 'lost' 2 weeks though being ill) and although it was hard work I got through it all ok and felt utterly fabulous afterwards. I had planned to repeat all of W4, which was where I was up to before (did a W3 on Sunday to gently start out again) but DH has suggested that maybe i should start W5 instead, hmm, not quite sure ???? Love love love the idea of moving on, but don't want to over-do it and set myself up to fail????

LOL at the idea of Piste having to start all over again!

Happy running everyone - it's sooooooo wroth it at the end of each session! Grin
