Listening to R4 this morning. FO not coming across as particularly competent in a clip about the fighting in Sudan.

A British woman stuck there with her family spoke about conflicting advice from the FO including being told not to join a UN convoy leaving Khartoum that she later found out British embassy staff had joined plus being required to fill in a FO form multiple times just to let them know where they were in the city. She said she had to ask a friend back in the uk to let the embassy know because there was no way to do so from Khartoum.

Doesnt sound like leaving the EU has led to simplified bureaucracy after all…or helped to ensure a more competent FO. Add to that the whole Raab debacle about the Afghanistan withdrawal and you’ve really got to wonder about that ministerial department. Makes me angry all over again about the dissolution of DFiD. That was such a loss.

Moreover, Rory Stewart was interviewed about Sudan and he was so knowledgeable. What a good FS he would’ve made. And what a dickhead Oliver Dowden is as our new deputy PM. God help us all if anything should happen to the boy wonder.

I can't belie Tory party member were so stupid to reject Rory Stewart (well, I can believe they were that stupid). I think he summed it up well himself, that they prefer comfortable lies (that they've had delivered in abundance) than uncomfortable truths.

“National conservatism” has a rather unhealthy ring to it.

Remember none of this matters to Louise and their ilk. They would happily be the last person left upon the smouldering remains of the UK - a country once regarded as wealthy and decent - as long as they have their precious sovereignty. A concept so ephemeral and ethereal that in 7 deals of debate no one has yet been able to deliver a definition two brexiteers will agree on.

This is why the only way forward for the UK is to ignore people like Louise. Both at the personal level, and at the political level.

The slow descent of the GOP gives us a tantalising glimpse of what may be yet to come.

Unicorn Kingdom

Rishi Sunak, "We just launched a campaign in Silicon Valley just talking about our companies and what they are doing.. The campaign is called Unicorn Kingdom."

I guess it works for the kind of fantasy thinking that Brexshit supporters have to do to pretend things are still going swimmingly...

Assuming that isn't a deep parody, it will be the lads at CCHQ trying to game Google.

Again.

Remember Boris' sudden hobby of model buses ?

That would be great but how would the stamping work? Not so good if there's another queue for stamping anyway.

The thing is it will be howled down by the JRMs of this world. And that's before having to ask if there is any political will for this in the EU.

RafaistheKingofClay · 25/04/2023 16:36

If we want the EU to do this we’ll have to offer them something in return won’t we. Which means it’s a non starter because Brexit Britain’s negotiating position is take everything give nothing.

Which is in opposition to its rest of the world trading position which is we’ll do anything please give us a trade deal.

There are 27 countries that could oppose any moves. And the UK will have to deal with each one individually. Bearing in mind Schengen makes things stickier, not easier on this side of the equation.

verdantverdure · 25/04/2023 18:38

Once we get a decent government who negotiate in good faith I think things will go more smoothly than people seem to think.

There are somethings that will move along but borders are sovereign and it will be down to individual countries to allow access to E Gates, as Spain, on its own, did to ease queues.

I'm not entirely convinced Labour will do any better then the current lot in regard to negotiating with the EU.

More winning

standout sentence:

But the UK has yet to announce its strategy, with the chancellor telling the BBC that he would wait to see what the EU did before making any decisions.

So much for "go your own way ...." eh ?

Can anyone do worse than the current lot? (sunak is just a different face, the rest of the fanatics are still in the driving seat.

HannibalHeyes · 26/04/2023 12:37

>I'm not entirely convinced Labour will do any better then the current lot in regard to negotiating with the EU.

That's still an attack vector by Tory supporters. I.e. "Yes we're awful, but look at them. They'll be just as bad. Not that we have any evidence for that, but if we keep saying it some gullible people will start to believe that they're all as hideously corrupt as we are."

And while I don't believe Labour are going to be Insert your favourite religious saviour here, I don't believe for a moment that they are even remotely as corrupt as this bunch of completely self-serving grifters.
