I suspect that because as a whole the UK economy is shrinking, in relation to the value of money.

pointythings · 19/04/2023 14:38

If news about the economy tanking is sensitive to Brexiteers then you have to ask why we're the snowflakes here...

dontcallmelen · 19/04/2023 19:58

Talking of potholes, hit one last week resulted in £298.00 for a new tyre tears were shed.

MNHQ are working on a feature to hide sensitive links, so apologies to any Brexiteers for now.

Have you read any of the comments?
I can't work out if the comments of spoofs taking the piss out of Leave voters or genuine Leave voters.

https://www.usnews.com/news/technology/articles/2023-04-19/tech-protectionism-would-risk-new-dark-age-says-uks-hunt

LONDON (Reuters) - British finance minister Jeremy Hunt said on Wednesday that Western countries and their allies should avoid the temptation to put up protectionist trade barriers in an attempt to gain an edge in technology.

"The strategic choice the world faces is now do we all say 'we're going to do this on our own,' and go back to protectionism, which would bring global growth back into the Dark Ages?," Hunt told an event hosted by Politico.

"Or do we recognise the benefits of free trade and say that, amongst friends and allies and people who share democratic values, we're going to build up resilient supply chains that we know will weather any global storms that we face?"

DuncinToffee · 20/04/2023 09:17

Yep Wink

Frustrating ‘it’s not our fault Brexit went wrong clip.

Expecting people who knew it would be a travesty to not be cross it’s a travesty is ridiculous. Are we supposed to just combust internally while nodding along?

There's going to be debate about a brexit enquiry. Link to petition as well.

Yawn.

Six million signatures got lost on the last petition I signed, and nobody noticed.

I posted about this (checks) Tuesday.

Hardly news, really. UK cops abuse anti-terror laws in political policing.

Peregrina · 21/04/2023 10:06

Dominic Raab resigns. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-politics-64467038
But appears to have done so with a bad grace. Typical for this bunch of Tories, but I suppose we have to be thankful that he didn't try to lie his way out of it.

Dominic Raab resigns over bullying report - BBC News

The deputy prime minister quits government but hits out at the inquiry into bullying allegations against him, saying its findings are flawed.

That of course is not directly related to Brexit, but just shows how low the standards of Tory MPs have sunk. We should expect better.

HannibalHeyes · 21/04/2023 11:14

Now this is interesting from the Washington Post.

A leak about the Kremlin's "Information War" in Germany. I'd love to see a similar leak about their influence on Brexshit.

Are dark forces working to discredit the vocally anti Brexit CBI ?

Are dark forces working to discredit the vocally anti Brexit CBI ?

I did rather wonder. But it does seem to be a toxic organisation in some ways.

Though I recall, back in 2016, wondering why the CBI was not more vocal about the business related dangers of Brexit given that businesses were always going to take the biggest economic hit. My memory was that, as an organisation representing business, it seemed to be rather muted on the matter.

I suspect there is a non empty set between "People who represent the CBI" and "People who get gongs" which are the gift of the ruling party.

DrBlackbird · 23/04/2023 10:17

Listening to R4 this morning. FO not coming across as particularly competent in a clip about the fighting in Sudan.

A British woman stuck there with her family spoke about conflicting advice from the FO including being told not to join a UN convoy leaving Khartoum that she later found out British embassy staff had joined plus being required to fill in a FO form multiple times just to let them know where they were in the city. She said she had to ask a friend back in the uk to let the embassy know because there was no way to do so from Khartoum.

Doesnt sound like leaving the EU has led to simplified bureaucracy after all…or helped to ensure a more competent FO. Add to that the whole Raab debacle about the Afghanistan withdrawal and you’ve really got to wonder about that ministerial department. Makes me angry all over again about the dissolution of DFiD. That was such a loss.

Moreover, Rory Stewart was interviewed about Sudan and he was so knowledgeable. What a good FS he would’ve made. And what a dickhead Oliver Dowden is as our new deputy PM. God help us all if anything should happen to the boy wonder.

Sad but true. At the time I had hopes that it would champion remain by pointing out the damage to businesses by leaving but clearly a case of divided loyalty or not biting the hand that feeds you?

SerendipityJane · 23/04/2023 10:35

News emerging that civil servants will leave the Asylum Processing gig if forced to break the law.

So now we need a law making it illegal to leave your job. Or a law forcing you to do your job. I am sure there are some templates around that will give German translators a brief rush of work. Although it's possible Putin has some lying around "just in case" his mates need them.

SerendipityJane · 23/04/2023 10:37

Of course with the media pumping out the narrative that all civil servants are Trotskyite scum, it will be trivial to introduce laws to "prevent" political action by civil servants.

1932-1936 ? 2019-2023 ? Could this be a rare British eclipsing of German efficiency ?
