Part 10 of our long running thread.
I'm still putting my money on a spring GE.
The tory slash and burn of the UK is right on track.

Another one from twitter, so true;

2016 Exact same benefits
2017 We won't be worse off
2018 It'll be tough but we know what we voted for
2019 There will be enough food
2020 It's not #Brexit it's Covid
2021 It's not Brexit it's Putin
2022 #Remainers must fix it
2023 Sovrinty

Live the vase, dontcallmelen.

It is just unimaginable how the Tories still get away with completely screwing over our economy.

Brexit. Johnson’s mismanagement. Ridiculous TCA and pulling unnecessarily out of any joint arrangement with the word ‘Europe’ in it. Truss’s even greater mismanagement. PPE scandals. Bullying. Sewage pouring into rivers and coasts. How, for the love of God, are they still in office?

But also where are the politicians we need? Starmer is well intentioned and intelligent but I’m apprehensive about both Nandy and Rayner. Argh!

I'd like to see a spring GE, but I think the Tories are going to cling on until the last possible moments, hoping the electorates will forget the current shitshow and vote them in again.

Thing is, they might! The English do love the Tories, no matter what they do, they'll always be forgiven and the next set of promises believed.

HannibalHeyes · 02/02/2023 01:30

You love to see it! Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols; "I know the BBC have to push the govt line a little bit"...

Cat’s got my vote. Smile

What impact has Brexit had on the UK economy?
www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-64450882

‘Overall, the government's independent watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility, thinks the UK will ultimately be 4% worse off, than it would have been if we had voted no to Brexit - although for many voters, Brexit was more about sovereignty than the economy.
But there remains a lot to be settled.
It is not just the Northern Ireland protocol, but also permanent arrangements for industries like financial services, fishing and electric vehicle parts, cooperation on science and ways to reduce red tape.
There are potential gains there and realising them is a matter of political as well as economic strategy.’

I’d say the combination of Brexit as a shocking massive national act of self harm brought about by unforgivable Brexiteer misdirection and lies plus the utter incompetence of the successive Tory governments to salvage the UK’s recovery from that, bodes extremely ill for our economic outlook.

Same for a lot of people’s trust in parliamentary politics on both sides of the Brexit debate which has been really damaged by this experience.
The awful national division and the economic and political fall out of Brexit is unforgivable just to settle an argument in the Tory party. Always they put party before country. And the Tories are still scrapping each other even now.

If Brexit had not happened, we could have prioritised the climate crisis, economic growth and public services. Instead..

TheABC · 02/02/2023 09:29

The problem is that voters handed Johnson a majority in 2019 and we have to live with it until the buggers are forced to call a General Election. Usually, that's a grim-and-bear-it job but the Tory calibre of ministers is so dire, they are causing active, malicious damage to the UK. With two years to run and dire polling, they won't ask the public until the looting is finished.

We're not letting them get away with anything. It's our system.

Lonelycrab · 02/02/2023 10:22

Weary pmk, not much to say either, thanks for all the threads, following closely.

731 daya to go until they have to have an election (I think)

Christ, nearly two years. If something doesn’t happen between now and then, all that’ll be left of the country is a smouldering huskSad

Harking back to the pre-referendum ads,

Promise - Fail

pointythings · 02/02/2023 13:40

@mixedrecycling we'll have an epic cabinet in no time. I think @dontcallmelen 's daffs should be in it too.

prettybird · 02/02/2023 14:43

The boys working hard in ds' "office" (ie his bedroom) Wink

They'd definitely add an "elite" element to the Cabinet Grin

DuncinToffee · 02/02/2023 14:47

LOL, I thought you were talking about your DS' friends.

They are gorgeous cats

pointythings · 02/02/2023 16:10

@prettybird your cats are aristoc(r)ats. Mine are just moggies. I vote yours for Education and International Development.

prettybird · 02/02/2023 18:07

It's not just the BBC - Andrew Bailey at the Bank of England is complicit in this. Angry And the Tories try to blame the "greedy" and unreasonable public sector workers and ignore the elephant in the country Angry

Brexit was always going to kill the Tory party. If it could just hurry up a bit it would be good.

prettybird · 02/02/2023 19:01

Such a shame Wink

I think you underestimate the brass neck of the tories and the dimness of the average voter (remember that's already 67% of the population anyway).

This time next year, you'll be told how the Conservative Party has always been pro-EU. After all, who's gonna challenge them ? The BBC. They're still pushing "balance".

verdantverdure · 02/02/2023 20:15

Yeah, some people are a bit "stuck" and apparently unable to take on new information or adjust to new situations, so you see them on threads saying "but Corbyn/The Hard Left/ Labour need to put out fully costed policy" as if they dipped into politics and current affairs once, and haven't felt the need to stay up to date or look for any new info.

I hope they're the minority though.

I wish I shared your optimism about the demise of the Tories.

verdantverdure · 02/02/2023 20:16

Boris Johnson is already extolling the virtues of the EU for Ukraine.
