Err...

Why TF should the EU renegotiate brexit to help keep car manufacturers from moving to the checks notes EU and making 800,000 jobs there?

Thaaaaaaat's Brexit!

DowningStreetParty · 19/05/2023 06:50

Christ! I wonder when I will stop being surprised by how low the Tories will go.
Brexit is just an endless, exorbitant, socially divisive, utter utter failure. Anyone can see that.

At what point can we have rules which state that the Tories must stop throwing good public money after bad? Serious question.
The Brexit hole can never be filled because it’s a completely wrong idea economically and socially. We just have to rejoin. And further to that, politicians on all side should (and should have been) be laughed at and shamed when they try (tried) to blame domestic policy problems like low pay, no training, no investment, on membership of the EU. The sleight of hand is awful.

verdantverdure · 19/05/2023 08:12

Agreed @DowningStreetParty

I'm confident we will rejoin now.

I was worried about the number of people who seemed brainwashed into repeating the slogans whilst reality was happening all around them, but most people seem to have caught on now.

It's just a matter of time.

But so much damage is being done the longer Brexit goes on.

DuncinToffee · 18/05/2023 23:25

Brexit's so good we have to bribe companies to stay.

Christ on a bike.

How low Brexit has brought us.

Congratulations to this man, who’s just been officially recognised by the Guinness World Records for the longest pause of all time while trying to think of some Brexit benefits.

Under new DEFRA plans, imports of unpasteurised cheese from Europe (gorgonzola, camembert) will need to be signed off one-by-one by veterinarians before they're shipped, because "biosecurity".

It's really quite impressive how stupid Brexit has been, way beyond my expectations.

One by one?

By vets?

‘Britain's Lucy Charles-Barclay will not race at Sunday's Ironman 70.3 event in Germany because of Brexit-related visa issues.
Since the UK left the European Union in 2020, UK nationals can only travel to countries in the Schengen area - which includes Germany - for up to 90 days in a rolling 180-day period.
Charles-Barclay, the 2021 half Ironman world champion, says she has used 88 days of her allowance and as a result has been unable to obtain a visa despite legal assistance.’

I’m just embarrassed for the UK.
What a stupid waste of time, talent, potential, money, opportunity, growth potential, everything.
And Brexit is worth all of that, because…?
This woman’s peak performance chance at winning a huge title has gone but the upsides for her (or anyone) are… er…. ??

DrBlackbird · 22/05/2023 08:37

Listening to the radio yesterday about the impending FTA with India and the rise in immigration numbers (highest ever?) and defence of student visas, with India as the biggest source of international students, the irony struck me again about how BeLeavers have swapped predominantly Christian eastern European immigrants for non Christian East and Southeast Asian immigrants. Was that their intention? Shame Clav’s not here to tell us as IIRC her DS was an immigration lawyer?

We just have to rejoin At least joining the single market. Maybe MNetters just ought to be put in charge of running this country because it’s certainly been completely screwed over by the British empire ideologues.

SerendipityJane · 22/05/2023 08:39

Worth remembering that what India gets (publicly or not) Pakistan will have to get soon too.

Peregrina · 22/05/2023 09:46

......about how BeLeavers have swapped predominantly Christian eastern European immigrants for non Christian East and Southeast Asian immigrants. Was that their intention?

At least one Brexiter on these threads didn't like that the EU was effectively a white Christian club, so would welcome further immigration from these areas. I suspect that this was very much a minority view in many parts of the country.

Now it's the turn of the Construction & Aerospace industries to ask for "better" Brexshit rules.

Actually, it's interesting (and rather pleasing) to note that as the downsides of Boris' Brexit come into focus, his stock appears to lose that little bit more value.

1dayatatime · 22/05/2023 20:36

For all the anti Tory posts it's important to remember that the majority of voters choose to poorer and worse off through Brexit and that even after it became blindingly obvious this was the case the majority of voters elected Boris with an 80 seat majority to see through a mess of Brexit delivery.

I don't blame the Tories for democratically delivering what the majority of voters asked for.

The blame sits firmly with those that a) voted for Brexit and b) compounded this error by voting for Boris in December 2019.

Nobody asked for this.

People wanted the glorious Brexit they were promised.

This, patently, is bullshit. They voted for the sunlit uplands they were promised. They voted for the reduced immigration they were promised particularly reduced immigration of "duskier hued" people, however obvious it was that the opposite would happen as they were promised. They voted for the cheaper food prices they were promised. They voted for the cheaper energy prices they were promised. They voted for the better trade deals they were promised. They voted for the same freedoms to travel they were promised.

Don't try and rewrite history on these threads - we have the receipts...

DrBlackbird · 22/05/2023 22:47

Just to add, that Brexit was on absolutely no one’s minds until ukip and then the Tories panicking about ukip as well as many of them being empire ideologues made it the number one topic. Then it quickly became about immigration. You’re right @Peregrina im sure one Brexit believer welcomed immigration from other than the EU but I can’t recall why.

Anyhow, it’s not really working out.
