It will be expanded to include poultry workers for the first time too.

Who will pay for the visas? If it's the employers will they pass the cost on to the consumer? Will people want to come anyway?

I read that recruits have to pay for the visa and return flights themselves but they must be paid £10.10 per hour rather than £9.50 minimum wage.

I expect those costs will be passed on to the consumer at some point.

Jonathan Powell, who had a key role in the negotiations that led to the GFA has this to say

Johnson is lying when he claims the bill to kill the NI Protocol is designed to save the Good Friday Agreement. A thread explaining why he is trying to mislead and why this bill in fact threatens the peace process 1/10

Was just coming to post that Duncin! A very clear thread from someone who knows his stuff.

prettybird · 14/06/2022 13:34

What Donaldson and the other extreme Unionists are beelin' about (good Scottish word Wink) is that contrary to their not God given assumption, they can no longer assume their majority continuing forever in NI.

That is what they're angry about and that is why they are so desperate to kill off the GFA Sad

Seems Spain will be keeping quiet until the UK has dug a deep enough hole to have to accept Spains taking control of Gibraltar as "necessary". I doubt Russia will wait that long over Ukraine though. After all this is exactly what they have paid the Tory party for.

Benifits of brexit so far:

  • Took control of our borders by flying 6 people to Rwanda for only £500million
  • Everything is more expensive
  • A third thing
  • Shut the fuck up
DuncinToffee · 14/06/2022 19:16

This is funny

here is Boris Johnson's new cost of living tsar - announced today - literally calling for him to quit a few months ago

twitter.com/PickardJE/status/1536725315090784256?t=Tyr0SqtcMLM_SoqOjTbCDQ&s=19

the good news is he’s now deleted the tweets so no one can see them

SerendipityJane · 14/06/2022 19:19

In other "never gonna happen" news, UK government is desperately (beyond belief according to insiders) trying to tell ARM that the UK is where they need to be

UK still fighting to secure UK listing of Arm Holdings, says tech minister

Current negotiations are that even when the decision is made and is not the UK, the government will pay ARM a considerable amount to keep their reasons "commercially confidential". Apparently the experience has already fed into future activities that will insist that Brexit cannot be discussed in negotiations (and therefore cannot be the reason for failing)

I am well aware it's impossible to disprove any of this, which must be a shame for some on this forum.

Can't verify this, but exciting if true;

Breaking: European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg grants rule 39 request to stop the
flight to Rwanda from leaving. Basis: real risk of inhuman and degrading treatment (Art. 3 ECHR).
Please share - government must comply.

HannibalHeyes · 14/06/2022 19:41

Mainstream news now reporting it.

borntobequiet · 14/06/2022 19:54

Totally. It’s why they were so behind Brexit. They really wanted a hard border and no hope of Irish unification. It’s back fired somewhat, hence the rage.

Peregrina · 14/06/2022 20:09

This will be music to the ears of Brexiters - because they are desperate to leave the ECHR. This saddens me deeply - in the immediate post war its establishment was led by British lawyers who had seen the horrors perpetrated in WW2 and wanted to prevent this happening again.

Originally proposed by Winston Churchill and drafted mainly by British lawyers, the Convention was based on the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It was signed in Rome in 1950 and came into force in 1953.

Johnson only channels Churchill when it makes him look good, so this is one Churchill act he won't be following. Patel I am convinced is a nasty bigot..

DuncinToffee · 14/06/2022 20:18

Remember - the Good Friday Agreement expressly requires the UK to have the ECHR directly enforceable in Northern Ireland

Ergo, the UK cannot leave the ECHR without breaking the Good Friday Agreement

Where Rwanda policy crosses Northern Irish policy

BJ's grandfather, James Fawcett, would be horrified given that he helped write the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and was a member of the European Commission of Human Rights for 22 years and its president for 10 of them Shock

He'll be birling in his grave SadAngry

HannibalHeyes · 14/06/2022 22:10

Ooh, on the BBC just now, the flight isn't going at all!

Chevyimpala67 · 15/06/2022 06:13

Well, the daily heil wil be in full on frothing mode...

The thread of deportation to Rwanda has not stopped migrants coming across.

It's failed on every conceivable level.

WhatdoImean · 15/06/2022 07:05

Is it time for this (again)?

Commentary on the ECHR...

quiteathome · 15/06/2022 07:30

It is all appalling.

I feel utterly stuck. And there is no accountability by the people who wanted this.

DrBlackbird · 15/06/2022 08:48

Well, the daily heil will be in full on frothing mode

They’ll have a field day with this one. We can expect to see calls for a rapid abandonment of the HRA and bringing on the British version. Of which, under this government’s guidance and Braverman, we can expect significant dilution of rights.

Also, not sure if this is old news but Stafford’s report says UK should drop the EU’s precautionary principle and allow all pesticides used in the US under a ‘mutual recognition’ system to be used in the UK. He uses false pairing by linking with this to decarbonising to strengthen a ridiculous argument. There are so many cases where a precautionary stance could’ve helped prevent health crises.

Bigger picture is that I’d lay money on the Tory party expecting the Republicans to return to office in 2 years and resuming FTA talks. We can look forward to American chlorine chicken and growth hormone injected beef being on sale in British supermarket shelves. That’s a Brexit bonus hey?

Not to mention Republicans would drop support for the GFA. It won’t be under Trump but more likely under Desantis. All in all, Tories must believe that if they hold on here until 2024 they’ll be safe after that.

Add in Palintir running the NHS database along with border control etc and that is a future that terrifies me for my DC.

Code: Labour slowly regaining its sanity.

About time Labour came to its senses. Brexit is a disaster for the UK on pretty much every level.
