I saw (I think) a tweet (might have been on FB) where a bakery is offering up a sort of living room above its ovens as a "warm room" during the day for those that need it.

What has this country come to? Sad

HappyWinter · 06/09/2022 22:19

That's heartbreaking about the mum at the food bank, I'm glad she has your support @Chevyimpala67 . I don't know people on low incomes are going to cope, everything is going up so much. It does feel like we are going backwards.

Although the Scottish Government now has limited discretion over the welfare budget, it is not allowed to go into debt and is required to work to a balanced budget - the majority of which comes from the pocket money block grant from Westminster.

So, unlike Westminster/Truss, it can't go into deficit to address the major problems that the population is is facing Sad

After now reading who is in the new cabinet I really think I need to step back from reading the news for a bit. Mocking and sarcastic despair helps release the rage and anxiety but it’s gone well past that now. So no more newspapers or evening news or news updates on my phone or Chris Grey or R4 (maybe just the comedy shows and The Archers). Maybe a bit of MN now and then.

I know.
It's beyond parody now.

I agree. It's just shit all round.

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2022 19:11

Yes indeed

Chevyimpala67 · 08/09/2022 19:17

Godspeed Your Majesty

DrBlackbird · 08/09/2022 22:32

96 year old Queen Elizabeth working right up to the end. Rumours of bone cancer apparently.

Vs. Johnson off on multiple holidays whilst the country is in crisis.

Takes a 96 year old woman to show him up.

RIP 🌻

Peregrina · 09/09/2022 00:33

Yes, an example to us all. Witness her dignity at the D of E's funeral, while Johnson was partying away, and then lying about it.

Exactly. I'm not a royalist (nor a republican - I'm a Big Old Meh), and I think she made mistakes especially in recent years, but HMQ really was a model of dignity and duty.

Peregrina · 09/09/2022 09:15

It will be very interesting to see how King Charles, being noted for being a meddler while Prince of Wales, tackles things. Will he stick his oar in and tell the likes of Truss, Rees-Mogg and the Cabinet of nonenties where to get off?

Will he end up with metaphorically the same end as the first with his name did?

prettybird · 09/09/2022 12:36

Typical BJ: turning his turn in the special HoC session to be all about him rather than the Queen. Hmm

prettybird · 09/09/2022 12:39

...though it did improve as he went on.

quiteathome · 10/09/2022 10:23

I am not a Royalist at all. It is just such a ridiculous concept.

However I did and still admire the Queen. I think with everything else being so turbulent at the moment this feels like a loss of continuity. She has always been there.

DrBlackbird · 10/09/2022 10:30

Anyone watching the Proclamation this morning? It’s very petty of me but I’m amused at Johnson stuck between Cameron and May.

Later he’s somehow moved away and standing next to a younger woman who has messier hair than he does and at one point appears to be talking to himself until Brown takes pity on him.

He must be pissed at Truss getting all the limelight.

Oh, he is fucking FURIOUS
🤣🤣

quiteathome · 10/09/2022 10:48

I think the Queen held on so Johnson wasn't prime minister when she died.

Even the dimmest among us have started to warm to the idea that her madge (RIP) clung on till Boris was gone.

In spectacularly bad taste, I won the bet I made last year that we'd have a King by 2023. There was no way Elizabeth Windsor wanted to carry on when Phillip had gone. The timing matches my grandparents. DGF passed in 1982, and just over a year later (on her birthday) DGM went.

Last song I heard on the wireless ? "Green green grass" by George Ezra. Who says modern music is rubbish ?

DuncinToffee · 10/09/2022 10:55

That song is an earworm

I haven't watched the proclamation but read what it involves and it is really something else. Time to modernise it imo.

DrBlackbird · 10/09/2022 11:48

Ah the girl with the messy hair was actually a photographer. The only person willing to talk to him. 😂

I’m wondering if Charles will be more active in that would he have pushed back harder at parliament being prorogued?

Interesting times maybe. And yes completely agree that HM smile when greeting Truss might’ve been ‘hah, outlived your rotten government Mr Johnson’.

quiteathome · 10/09/2022 11:52

I am hoping that Charles will be more active on environmental issues.
