Article in FT behind paywall but this thread covers a lot of it including graphs

NEW research by @thom_sampson et al. of LSE shows #Brexit triggered "steep decline"in the number of trading relationships Britain has with the bloc -- with small biz hit hardest - my @ft latest. Stay with me for links and charts. /1

What happened there Shock MN told me to make a cuppa and come back later and then it posts multiple times. The site is annoying the hell out of me at the moment.

Same happened to me elsewhere.

borntobequiet · 26/04/2022 10:14

I find that if you post, get that message but instead of trying to post later, immediately refresh your browser, it works.
They should be asking for their money back from whoever did this awful upgrade.

DuncinToffee · 26/04/2022 11:10

Yes, I figured that out as well

BlackeyedSusan · 27/04/2022 10:29

Yep, as it's refusing to bookmark again and I CBA to scroll through the multiple posts that is the latest iteration of the downgrade fuckup.

Long thread on the latest Frost episode

A thread on a remarkable speech by DavidGHFrost in which he admits he blinked in the negotiations & that the PM misled people about the deal, seems oblivious to the damage it has done and has the nerve to portray himself as a Unionist despite risking it to get Brexit done 1/n

JRM
Checks on food imports from the EU 'would have been an act of self-harm', says @JacobReesMogg after the UK delayed plans to impose the checks until the end of 2023

Brexit benefit for the EU then?

Brexit is an act of self-harm

borntobequiet · 29/04/2022 08:37

I heard JRM’s self harm comment. What a twat he is.

prettybird · 29/04/2022 08:48

James O'Brian's take on this.

https://twitter.com/mrjamesob/status/1519739098365411328?s=21&t=YiuuOYYZ785XKoyrjI5q_Q

The Government is actually admitting that it would cost businesses £1 billion, which would have to be passed on to consumers and that it would be "an act of self harm" Confused. And Smug does so with a straight face and no shame Angry

The first comments to the post reflect what I was saying to Stephen last night: when are other countries, still subject to controls, going to make a formal complaint to WTO? Hmm

There is also at least one eejit on the thread that seems to think that this will help the balance of payments deficit ShockConfused

It still astonishes me that people were stupid enough to vote for this and MPs stupid enough to campaign for it. The MPs clearly, even at the time, didn't have a clue what any of it meant. I think Johnson's, back of an envelope list sums it up, really? He thought the complexities of international trade, peace in NI, and political harmony could be covered on the back of an envelope? Why do MPs and Joe Public think they know better than the experts!

Yep we all became experts on WTO, SM, CU, GFA, EuroTom, tariffs etc etc BUT the people who we elected to actually know about these things (or find out) didn't care, as the damaging affects of Brexit don't effect them, so they used it to gain power.... Criminal really.

DuncinToffee · 29/04/2022 10:24

Boris Johnson(25/12/20) - "That oven ready deal was just the starters. The trade deal is the feast, full of fish by the way...'

Then Jacob Rees-Mogg tells us that implementing that deal "would have been an act of self-harm" (28/04/22)

Well, they certainly aren't coming to tell us how well trade with the EU is going, why we've outsourced food safety to the the EU or how many visa's we will take to have a India trade deal (at any cost as it has to be done by October)

btw India is supporting Russia, not "neutral" as Bojo tells us.

Busy with Keir's Beer when they are partial to eating while at work also, and then boasting about it. twitter.com/mrjamesob/status/1519739098365411328?s=21&t=YiuuOYYZ785XKoyrjI5q_Q

Thanks to all for the continued supply of good links (even if most of them make depressing reading!).
I've been avoiding MN since the new-look site was launched. I do hope we haven't lost @DGRossetti for good, but I can't blame anyone for whom it's the last straw.

Do any of you watch Phil Moorhouse's 'A Different Bias' channel on YouTube?
