I'm sure certain philistine Brexiters will say good riddance to a great British sculptor choosing to get a German passport via his mother, but this article also mentions other consequences of Brexit, in particular the declining role of the UK in the international art trade.

Jet2 - which seems to have been one of the companies that wasn't too badly affected by the travel chaos because they forward planned - puts the most of the blame for the issues being faced on Brexit

The Express leading teh campaign to rejoin the single market

(They say "latest" but are rather shy about the results).

Ongoing negative effects of Brexit. So while, on occasion, the UK might claim greater "growth" than other countries/regions, it's from a lower base Hmm

Letters are in, vote of no confidence tonight 6-8pm

prettybird · 06/06/2022 08:38

Jesse Norman's letter is a doozie. Grin

prettybird · 06/06/2022 08:39

....which means that there are at least 55 letters as the threshold was reached last night. Brady says he talked to the PM to let him know yesterday.

prettybird · 06/06/2022 08:42

As ds has just said, whichever conservative member thought of "conservative Corbyn" may have killed bojo with just 2 words Wink

It would be such a delicious epithet to follow BJ around Grin

DuncinToffee · 06/06/2022 08:49

It would

It must also delight the 'but Corbyn' crowd on here Wink

DuncinToffee · 06/06/2022 08:53

Tom Larkin who has been keeping track of letters

^So: 46 MPs questioning PM's leadership
30 calling for him to go immediately
19 confirmed letters - Jesse Norman's this morning the most damning yet.^

Clear that the private numbers are plenty worse for the PM than what we can see in public
t.co/ycH8WKRCj8

Will we get informed of how many letters went in and by whom?

prettybird · 06/06/2022 08:55

I think that's up to those that sent their letters in, whether they want to go public. Brady is the epitome of discretion.

DuncinToffee · 06/06/2022 08:59

Yes that's sounds right, just seen it's a secret ballot as well.

I clearly didn’t pay much attention with May.

LouiseCollins28 · 06/06/2022 09:14

No we won't know how many letter. Only "more than 54", we will however see how many votes of cofidence/no confidence there are sometime after 8pm tonight.

pointythings · 06/06/2022 09:16

I hope Boris wins and carries on haemorrhaging support for the Tory party.

Peregrina · 06/06/2022 09:30

I wonder how influential the booing was?

Another point I liked about Norman's letter was his criticism of Johnson's would be Presidential style. This was something which needed saying.

prettybird · 06/06/2022 09:52

Alistair Campbell's rant on Sky News was epic Grin

....but even he was saying he was torn as BJ staying on would be the worst thing for the Conservative Party. Confused

Indeed. And especially as the UK doesn't have the checks and balances of the US system with its 3 pillars of "power".

In the UK, once a government is formed - especially if it has a decent majority- it's effectively a parliamentary dictatorship Sad

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 06/06/2022 12:19

prettybird, that's a depressing graph.

Jesse Norman didn't hold back.

John Penrose, anti corruption man, has resigned. Worth reading his letter too.

Bit ungrateful after all the loot his wife got bunged by Boris.

prettybird · 06/06/2022 14:26

True. But if the Anti-Corruption Champion - especially one already tainted by association - finally finds BJ beyond the pale, what does that say about how bad the morality and culture of the place is? Shock

Tanith · 06/06/2022 14:33

Jeremy Hunt has said he'll vote against Boris Johnson.

Those messages of support from the Cabinet ministers have a definite formulaic look.

prettybird · 06/06/2022 14:39

As I just said to my dad, I think the thread I’ve read by Peston (and Matthew Parris is apparently saying similar), saying that he’s toast whatever the result and that he’ll be gone soon, like May and Thatcher were, is deluded as BJ has no sense of morality or responsibility (to anyone other than himself). He will continue to cling on beyond all sense of logic.

So, if he doesn’t lose the VONC tonight, even if he only “wins” by one vote, he’ll stay on and try to brazen it out.

I could even see him calling a snap election. He would need to move himself to a “safe” seat as he’d lose in his current constituency. But the prediction for Tiverton suggests there is no such thing as a safe seat Grin

He still thinks that sound bites like "Oven Ready Deal" even if they're lies will win round the public Hmm The latest one is "The Public just wants us to move on".
