The reason Fascism has never got a foothold in the UK is because we have the Tory party.

Make of that what you will.

HappyWinter · 14/04/2022 20:15

The idea still seems madness and unworkable. How is it not April Fool's Day? You couldn't make it up, you also couldn't make The Thick of It now.

'Morally reprehensible, probably unlawful and [possibly] unworkable' - former Home Office head on Rwanda plan …

DrBlackbird · 14/04/2022 21:57

So it appears that Israel has already tried this route themselves right down to using Rwanda. It didn’t go well.

As this Rwanda story develops I'm quite apprehensive to check the GBeebies coverage, just in case the presenters have all wanked themselves unconciouss...

When was the last time your plane was surrounded by armed soldiers?

Does a bus from Dublin to Ballyshannon (Ireland) via Enniskillen (NI) count?
They boarded the bus and pointed semiautomatic rifles at all the passengers, looking everyone up and down with faces of stone.

This was all pre GFA of course.

'Morally reprehensible, probably unlawful and [possibly] unworkable'

Isn't that the mission statement of this government? Grin

borntobequiet · 15/04/2022 07:22

Actually I think the Rwanda idea will be a bit too much for quite a few right-leaning people. It’s not very British, is it? They may not like immigrants and would rather they didn’t come here but packing them off to (their description) darkest Africa might be a bit beyond the pale.

In that Oxford Law blog, the authors point out that all of the asylum seekers sent to Rwanda stayed in the country no more than a few days before trying again with a people smugglers. If so, Pritti’s plan will simply double the money for them.

DuncinToffee · 15/04/2022 10:00

I have seen some clips of Tom Pursglove (HO minister) doing the news round and he couldn't defend the indefensible, in the end his broadband just cut off

Reminds me the final series of the uniquely brilliant Derry Girls is underway.

Maybe it’s her side hustle.

It's almost like she has shares in them.

Mind you that serves to remind you that the only people that benefit from our drugs laws are the drugs barons. To the extent that it's impossible not to see a causal link. But when we measure "success" but "low number of addicts" rather then "number and value of drugs seized", it's pretty inevitable.

We seem to be living out an actual manifestation of Russell T Davies' "Years and Years" Sad

A few minor differences: Channel 4 being privatised rather than the BBC; a female businesswoman as PM (although like BJ, populist and controversial). But far too many uncomfortable parallels Sad

JustAnotherPoster00 · 15/04/2022 10:29

OK for prince Harry though...

Hes not elected is he? What could they have done? His Royal Nonceness should be in the tower but hes not

I'm not sticking up for the wearing of the uniform but a ridiculous comparison to make while were in a monarchy

Merely pointing out the disgusting behaviour of a member of the RF who we as tax payers pay for? Although obviously Prince nonce has rather surpassed him.

Not elected, and therefore untouchable?

This whole fucking country stinks (and its not the rotten fruit and veg lying unpicked in the fields...)

Absolutely disgusting behaviour I agree but we live in a monarchy and so us plebs have to just live with until we finally become a republic, as Johnshon is demonstrating even if youre elected you can be untouchable too, but demonstrably so the RF get away with everything let alone everything we dont find out about

I was a bit confused Wink - was trying to work out the royal link to Years and Years Confused

Glad you clarified Grin

Nothing surprises me anymore, that's how low they have sunk. We are boiled frogs, things get worse slowly enough that people don't notice, that and our media (we are unlucky enough to have the Daily Mail etc) isn't holding politicians to account.

ChiswickFlo · 15/04/2022 20:44

A plane carrying Rwandan President Habyarimana was shot down by a missile in April 1994, triggering the Rwandan genocide in which more than 800,000 died.

The man who shot that plane down is who Patel just signed a deal with.
