The UK (Johnson) is good at making his actions sound more than they are. He’s always done this. Plus, I don’t believe him. That’s the problem with lying so easily and frequently.

Watching QT last night. Apparently Putin is not on the sanction list… This is the danger of an international financial system so small and tightly intertwined that no govt feels able to fully punish Russia. Made me wonder if Putin’s threat about "consequences you have never seen" was more about money than nuclear weapons.

This ^. And cyber attack, Russia’s speciality, practised and honed for decades now.

DrBlackbird · 25/02/2022 09:32

if the remedy for being prevented from voting is fuck all, then it follows a vote is worth fuck all

Totally agree that ‘Democracy’ is an imperfect system of representation open to manipulation and exploitation. Too many gaming the political system for personal benefit. However, so far there’s been no better, plausible alternative.

DrBlackbird · 25/02/2022 09:49

Russian forces now in Kyiv… faster than Kabul’s fall. Probably same repercussions.

DGRossetti · 25/02/2022 09:51

I repeat my comment from the last thread about asymmetric warfare being something the Russians have perfected. And maybe if we valued history as much as we value reality TV we too would have an understanding of it. It's what Sun Tzu, Alexander, Caesar, Machiavelli all knew and preached.

We can only hope the Ukrainians are as hard to beat as the Finns in 1940.

DuncinToffee · 25/02/2022 10:37

From the guy who Truss didn't think would lie to her

This from foreign minister Lavrov is another level:

The decision to denazify Ukraine was taken so that Ukrainians freed from that ‘yoke’ could freely decide their future

GlacindaTheTroll · 25/02/2022 10:39

@DuncinToffee

Even the Taliban is calling for dialogue and restraint over Ukraine
Well, it takes the heat off what is happening in Afghanistan, doesn't it?

And they're pretty anti being invaded

prettybird · 25/02/2022 10:48

The Ukraine that has as its President a Jewish guy whose grandfather fought against Hitler and whose great uncles died in concentration camps? That Ukraine? Confused

The "denazification" that is required is of the mad self-styled demagogue in Russia Sad

My SIL (originally from Ukraine) hasn't heard from her relatives in Ukraine Sad She is appalled by what is going on and (amongst other sweary words) thinks he is an aging autocrat who wants to go out with a bang Sad

Delurking - EmmaH2022 if you are still reading this article by Carole Cadwalladr from way back in 2017 is quite illuminating.

Particularly cynical from a regime that courts and manipulates far-right movements...
pointythings · 25/02/2022 12:42

Putin has a bloody nerve, calling the West Nazis. But it's a narrative that plays well with Russian nationalists.

Pmcats.

I hope the tory links to Putin and his allies aren't screenshotted for posterity before their existense is purged from the net. I mean, of course they will be, and good job too, they need to be held to account.

Their lack of speed in applying sanctions to probable donors just tells us where their allegiances are, and it isn't with the British people. I hope I see these corrupt fuckers in court. Especially Mogg, selling his Sberbank shares so soon before an invasion, surely insider trading...

Opal8 they've been here less than a week and are fully settled. It's amazing. The original boy loves having someone to chase around (and be chased around by!) - her Ladyship was never that keen. And she's loving being left in peace, and the newbies respect her.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 25/02/2022 18:39

DuncinToffee · 25/02/2022 18:53

Reporters are now pronouncing Kyiv the Ukranian way; Kyiv (KEE-yiv), not the Russian Kiev (kee-ev)

I thought that it was because they were actually there, I first noticed Nick Robinson doing it, but then he reverted to the normal BBC pronounciation (on and off).
DuncinToffee · 25/02/2022 19:35

Yes that could be the case.
I didn't know that we were pronouncing it the Russian way. I noticed Clive Myrie saying it differently so looked it up and came across Lyse Doucet's tweet explaining the difference.
