Who knew that there’s a group called Westminster Russia Forum that used to be called the "Conservative Friends of Russia".

Friends indeed.

Peregrina · 26/02/2022 09:15

Just having a Government distracted by Brexit has meant that they haven't had time or energy to examine what has been happening in the wider world.

DrBlackbird · 26/02/2022 09:16

Agree prettybird no point in engaging. Would be ironic if Reluctant was a bot Grin

Is the name change fairly recent? They probably thought that calling it the Russia Research Group would be too transparent.

I haven’t been on this thread for ages but it just came up in active. Can’t believe someone is trying to say that someone else is trying to say Brexit caused Russia to attack the Ukraine, how utterly ridiculous.

As is the idea that using Brexit to distract Europe was not a part of Putin’s plan. I shouldn’t be surprised as it has been very obvious that there have been Russian shills on MN for ages and they really are not subtle or at all clever.

Hi, Volterra, stick around! I think we’re in for more deflection and entertainment over the next few days. It’s always interesting to see the line being peddled by our visitors and how it evolves.

Ldt us not forget all the time the architect of Leave.EU Dominic Cummings spent in Russia....

It's very hard to resist the impression they are being paid by Russia to "be distracted".

That's my deduction. Prove me wrong.

At least he's telling us how it is now - to whatever degree you believe him. He's confirmed there's been Russian money sloshing around UK politics for long enough to corrode our democracy.

Not being able to have confidence (which is not the same as agreeing with them for any thicker readers) in our government at any time - but particularly now - isn't a great state of affairs.

Well, if some don’t wish to believe us on the extent of Russian influence in British politics, perhaps they’re willing to believe actual British politicians?

The 2020 Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament report on Russia states:

Welcoming Russian money "offered ideal mechanisms by which illicit finance could be recycled through what has been referred to as the London ‘laundromat’. The money was also invested in extending patronage and building influence across a wide sphere of the British establishment – PR firms, charities, political interests, academia and cultural institutions were all willing beneficiaries of Russian money, contributing to a ‘reputation laundering’ process.

In brief, Russian influence in the UK is ‘the new normal’, and there are a lot of Russians with very close links to Putin who are well integrated into the UK business and social scene, and accepted because of their wealth. This level of integration – in ‘Londongrad’ in particular – means that any measures now being taken by the Government are not preventative but rather constitute damage limitation.

DuncinToffee · 26/02/2022 10:12

Brexit caused the invasion said no one on these threads ever but thanks for the laugh.

Putin has underestimated Zelensky and the Ukranian people, such bravery shown

DuncinToffee · 26/02/2022 10:17

And then there was the Johnson Lavrov press conference in 2017 where Johnson proudly claimed that there was no successful Russian interference

Medvedev also condemned Russia's suspension from the Council of Europe, but boasted that it offered Moscow an opportunity to restore the death penalty to Russian law.

There’s someone whose glass is half full.

HannibalHeyes · 26/02/2022 12:51

And who was there at the launch of the then Conservative Friends of Russia? None other than Carrie Johnson, or Symonds in those days.

Hmm, wonder why Boozo doesn't seem to be taking it too seriously...

DuncinToffee · 26/02/2022 13:05

Did you see the video in which he addresses the Ukranian and Russian people? The state of him.

@Opal8 I hope it gets easier at the foodbank, I worry about how people on the edge will cope with yet more price rises. My food shopping keeps going up, some things are the same and some have gone up 20%, if someone has no wiggle room it's going to be impossible. I'm not that optimistic about the future either, obviously try to make the best of it, it does feel like living standards are falling. There's going to be even bigger rises in energy and food prices. I hope we can speed up on renewables, both for climate change and for the geopolitical implications, we'd have a stronger hand if we didn't rely on imported gas and it would help Ukraine. I'm trying to cut our energy usage on a personal level, I know that's not going to make all the difference, but reduction in energy usage alongside increasing renewables would help wean the UK off its dependence on gas.

No one on here said that Brexit made Putin invade Ukraine, we were stating the Russian involvement in Brexit via social media etc. It works to their advantage to have a weaker UK and EU. There has been more possible bot activity on other threads this week, they are easier to spot at the moment.

Thank you x

Went to a large M&S food store earlier today after taking mum to a hospital appointment.

The entire freezer section was empty. Totally.
Not much choice elsewhere and very short dated stuff.

Not very busy in town either for the Saturday after payday...
