It's been an age since I've been on a ferry tbh

They're handy for hopping to Holland or France, but that's about it. My last time was in summer 2020 during the lull between pandemic waves. Still very glad we went and got to see family, had a truly lovely time.

This post by someone called NovaMN on the P & O thread is worth repeating here.

It's not about blaming Brexit, but the message was that Brexit would create more jobs, pay higher wages, give better protection, all the things were were led to believe were caused by being in the EU. All blamed on cheap foreign labour.

Clearly there were always more issues to address than Brexit could solve. We have exited the EU and still 800 workers are being shafted.

Yes, where are these higher wages, workers rights being protected? Although having been sold to a Dubai company and registered in the Bahamas/Liberia/where-ever will mean that British workers rights would not apply anyway.

This news does not to me look like the UK leading the way on raising Global Standards. It's yet again a race to the bottom as far as the average person is concerned, and in this case a few wealthy folks in Dubai eyeing up the signs which say MORE MONEY for ME.

Thanks for that.

I imagine the dubai based owners will strip and sell off?

Peregrina · 17/03/2022 14:58

I imagine the dubai based owners will strip and sell off?

I imagine so. This sort of thing shows the stupidity of our Governments - an island nation which cannot feed itself is dependent on sea born freight movements - so we let foreign firms own the freight operators. We should be insisting on having controlling stake in the businesses and if that comes with increased costs of paying decent wages and conditions, so be it.

ChiswickFlo · 17/03/2022 15:01

Hmmm

There may be more to this yknow...

"Making a point of order in the House of Commons, the Kingston upon Hull North MP described P&O's actions as "shameful" and warned they will have a "major economic impact on places like the Humber".

She said the staff who have been made redundant are being replaced by agency staff.

"I understand from the RMT union that these agency staff, mainly from overseas, are in buses on the quayside with a security firm, hired by DP World, wearing balaclavas and taking British crew off these ships. This is shameful and it goes against all norms of fair and reasonable behaviour," Ms Johnson added."

ChiswickFlo · 17/03/2022 15:02

So if I've read that correctly uk crew are being replaced by cheaper foreign agency crew?

Peregrina · 17/03/2022 15:04

The P & O CEO said "In its current state, P&O Ferries is not a viable business. We have made a £100m loss year on year, which has been covered by our parent DP World. This is not sustainable. Without these changes there is no future for P&O Ferries."

Sorry, but £100m loss p.a. is not a lot of money for this Government - they managed to spaff £37 billion on failed test and trace, wrote off a few billion fraudulent furlough sums, and have just finally managed to repay a £4 million debt to Iran. They ought to be finding ways to bail the company out.

I am seeing reports that under EU law, P&O couldn't have sacked the 800 people like they just did, if this is true, what a Brexit bonus Angry

Apparently P&O asked the government (i.e. the taxpayer) for a bailout of £150m as P&O made £100m losses year on year as Peregrina says.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-60779001

All while DP World are making huge profits.

£100m isn't a lot in the context of government spending I agree, but I understand P&O have been supported by the government during COVID. Also £100m annual losses when the entire company cost £300m ish to buy 3 years ago does suggest the company was sinking fast.

It gets worse

Pippa Crerar
P&O Ferries make all UK staff redundant after kicking passengers off ships. As @REWearmouth reports DP World is majority-owned by Dubai Sovereign Wealth Fund so ultimately by Dubai Royal Family. Boris Johnson met UAE Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed y'day.

It's Dirhams in Dubai.

I'm going to the Supreme Court to prove @BorisJohnson brexit deal was worse than remaining in the EU

The entire article could have been summed up as:

TL;DR I am so stupid I can't be trusted to sit on a toilet the right way.

ChiswickFlo · 17/03/2022 17:36

Good lord....😲

Peregrina · 17/03/2022 19:09

They mistimed it of course - it should have been yesterday when we were all excited about Nazanin and the other person (who we didn't even know about!) being freed.

OK it may not be a direct result of Brexit, but how many Brexiters would have voted Leave if they knew it would mean more jobs for foreigners, not fewer?

pfeffel open to attending US - EC meeting

I suspect the EC will invite him because they're not petty - though not because 'global Britain' or feeling sorry for the buffoon hanging around outside.
